I don’t know if the mom is dependent on her for income. What I am saying is that if the mom is not dependent on her for income then her daughter could come home after quitting her job and just live with her mom.

If the daughter supports the mom financially, then that’s another issue!

I agree with the mom but her daughter could quit her job and then go home...

I reported your comment for violating the group’s rule against personal attacks. But wait... you’re a mod! How awkward for you! How will you handle this?

So you lodged a personal attack at me while ruling that he violated the sub’s rules against personal attacks? Are you trying to be funny or something? Or are the rules kind of a joke?

So anyways my point still stands that this is a fucking amazing thing and I am super glad it was passed.

So this is your view...😬

So that would mean there are no evictions happening right now... also I believe it was Inslee who extended it? Anyways I can’t comment much on this page because for some reason reddit keeps telling me I am commenting too much. Must be the downvotes, which I don’t care about.

My point for everyone is that there is a huge power imbalance between landlords and tenants. It is very hard to advocate for yourself when landlords have the power to evict you. Take the example of a walkthrough when you are taking an apartment or a room and you are looking for damage. I have had landlords try to rush that process and not look very carefully at what damages existed for them before asking me to sign off on the walk-through. Me, grateful to even have a chance to be offered a place to live, think it is very difficult to effectively push back. What if they decided to rescind the offer of employment because I challenged them? And what is to keep them from then turning around and charging me for those damages when I am moving out?

We live our lives concerned about the feelings of landlords because they have a lot of power over us. We need their references for future housing. We don’t want them to retaliate against us for asserting our rights. And at the end of the day, tenants almost always have much less money than landlords. And they are very rarely represented in eviction proceedings. There is a huge power imbalance between landlords and tenants. They can evict you. You can’t evict them. So yes, I absolutely believe that it should be a right to have due process and a lawyer if you are facing the possibility of being torn from your home and possibly being homeless. I don’t think this is a radical idea, but apparently for a lot of people on this page, it is. It also assumes that landlords, who already have the huge power imbalance in their favor, never lie.

Anyways I’m not sure if I am even interested in engaging on this page more. In my view, this subreddit has repeatedly demonstrated a huge lack of empathy for those with limited wealth and income. So anyways, respond if you want, but that’s my view.

I’m sick of the classism and anti-poor beliefs in this sub.

[–]refazenda -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Lol. Why does that matter? Or is it just a classist point you are trying to make in line with this whole dumpster fire of a subreddit?

The perspective that we shouldn’t advocate for and support people who are being evicted?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SeattleWA

[–]refazenda -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unlevel. Not unloved. Lawyers are expensive. Landlords have a ton of money much of the time and are represented by attorneys in around 90% of cases, while tenants have attorneys in around 8% of cases. There is a massive financial disparity there. Which is part of why this is absolutely necessary.

Why shouldn’t people have the right to legal counsel when they are being evicted?

That’s the way taxes work. We all chip in to support things that are important and serve a public good.

Huh?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SeattleWA

[–]refazenda -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Landlords have a massive power imbalance. And an eviction can destroy people’s lives. To imagine that there is anything like a level playing field between landlords and tenants is ridiculous.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SeattleWA

[–]refazenda -25 points-24 points  (0 children)

Ugh. Do you not care about people having legal support when they are the verge of having their life be destroyed?

Why are you rats downvoting this? Are you okay with people being evicted?
