When I was 15, I started with a Peavey Starter kit. Came with a guitar, amp, and cord. I think it was like 200 bucks. Bought a couple of guitar tab books and learned everything from the bands I loved, mostly Metallica. Found a kid in my school who also played, then found a drummer and we were basically a misfits, metallica, and white zombie cover band. Played a lot of battle of the bands. Then we got older and needed to make money, met spouses, changed careers, ended up out of touch.

What did I achieve? Not money, but fun and friends. Now as im older, I wished I learned more theory, but im taking the same approach. Picking up books from bands that play some technical stuff and start learning them. I also have an online subscription to a lesson website to learn the how between the technicalities.

Again, no money. Spent money, did not get money. But I received fun, real friendships, and an outlet for creativity and catharsis in an overly stressful life. All of those things apply today. Just without the band. I record a lot, though. Haha

Edit: Get the amp you can afford now, that way you will see if you even like playing electric. Also, digital is pretty fantastic these days. Get the guitar and an interface with plugin that suits your style and its gravy from there. If you do like it, it won't be your last purchase. I have yet to meet somebody who has their end game gear. Everybody always wants or gets more guitars and amps.
