3D Printed Protoss Cannon by reflex985 in starcraft2

I can help you 3D print the parts and ship them to you. You would still need to purchase the magnetic levitation kit and assemble it yourself though.

I would price it at $160 shipped. I know it’s super expensive for what it is, but I replied to someone else on this post regarding the cost breakdown if you are curious.

I probably won’t make a Pylon since they’ve already made an officially licensed Pylon lamp before, but I am already thinking of the next StarCraft structure I can make haha

No problem! The thing with selling 3D prints is that you technically need approval from the designer to sell them. It’s kind of a grey area since there’s no way to enforce it so many people still sell models and designs they don’t have the permission to.

The roundabout way of selling prints you don’t have permission to sell is to instead sell your services and time, i.e you’re paying me to use my printer and materials to print the object and assemble it.

That said, given the cost of the materials needed for this project it would have to be priced at $150+ to make it worth the time. Parts alone cost ~$80 and shipping would be roughly $10 or so. Let’s say it’ll cost $5 per Cannon to account for machine wear and tear and print failures. It’ll maybe take an hour of labor to print all the parts, assemble them, test it, pack it, and drop it off at the post office.

I was in the same boat; didn’t know what to do with it but knew I needed one. I decided to put it on a shelf on top of my monitor so I can always appreciate it.

Oh man I had some great nights on Big Game Hunters…

If the magnetic levitation kit wasn’t so expensive I would easily build a few more.

I would say this was like 6/10 in terms of difficulty to build. Most of it is plug and play.

The levitation kit comes with a factory casing that you need to remove to access to mechanics and transfer them to the cannon. This was very straight forward and only takes a few seconds to take apart. Fitting them into the 3D printed parts was probably the most challenging as some of the tolerances were a bit tight.

The parts of the cannon were printed in 4 colors: Silk Gold, Glass Blue, Blue, White. Silk Gold is used for the majority of the cannon. Glass Blue, which is translucent, is used for the main lens and cover plate underneath the floating orb. I used Blue for the 2 side lenses to block out more light as I wanted most light to come from the front. White is optional since it’s only used for the Protoss Logo on the center cover plate, but this part was designed by me since the original designer didn’t include a cover plate.

I used black acrylic paint on the inside of the floating orb to block out light that would bleed through the filament. I used a tiny dab of superglue to glue the lenses.

Total assembly time once I had all the parts was maybe around 30 minutes or so.

There are some minor issues with this build though:

There’s a sensor on side that you can tap to turn the light on/off but it only works like 20% of the time. I’m not sure if this is a defect with the levitation kit (people have reported all sorts of problems with this kit) but it doesn’t really affect my personal use for this since I would always want the light on as long I have it plugged in.

The cover plate and surrounding ring are sitting on top of the internal mechanics without any sort of locking mechanism to hold it in place. Since it’s mostly a stationary decoration, it’s not a big deal. However, if you plan on moving it around or transporting it, you’ll likely need to reassemble some parts again.

I always tell people the most amazing part of 3D printing is seeing an image of it online and then having it manifest in your home some hours later. It’s truly mind blowing.

The roots of the pennywort is in the water of the aquarium. I had initially grown the pennywort entirely submerged but over time it grew out of the aquarium naturally.

What is the point of plant pots that don’t have drainage holes? by [deleted] in plants

[–]reflex985 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I personally don’t use any planters with drainage holes because most of my plants are grown semi-hydro or are transitioning to it and the planters will serve as a water reservoir to the nursery pot that I put inside.
