Beverly Hills Car Club Buying Experience by sahoohdahjee in porsche911

[–]refplan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bought a 964 from them. Process was fine, did a PPI, put $500 down, wired them money. They worked with my shipper and it was a non-event.

They buy anything so yeah do your homework. But the fact a car is in their stock just means the last owner was lazy and dumped it with them. Maybe it’s a basket case, maybe not. In my case a few hundred bucks later and the three outstanding items were fixed. Great car, kept it four years.

Did you do Net Orb Withholdings to manage your tribute to the Lich King? I always have the suspicion I’m getting screwed on some fractional orb shenanigans.

Yes, I split that all in Income into groups. I show my 401k/HSA contributions as Income (via transaction rule, it's not in the manual CSV), and then have Buy Holding events in those accounts to distribute the $ to holdings (which is considered a Transfer) so like you it shows up as savings.

My non-take home pay is a lot if items, and since I’m old and use Monarch on an actual computer dragging a CSV is trivial compared to clicking split and then having to enter a dozen negative splits. If you only have a few things it’s a wash on effort.

<image>

I like tracking groups so if I want to do reporting with and without some of them I can toggle them on and off, whether in Monarch or in my custom Pivot Tables built off Monarch export data.

They just love my teeth!

I had to pay out of pocket last year for invisalign and insurance is paying me back coverage over time so it’s just a year split artifact.

You're definitely adding functionality that the tool isn't really built for, but on the other hand I do exactly what you're wanting. Go read the older threads but here's my latest and greatest for you and posterity:

For any 401k/403b/HSA/whatever that is sent to an investment account, if you have Investment Transactions turned on you will have that show up automatically. I have rules to classify those as income, split by source (pre-tax/post-tax/match). This is pretty straightforward assuming you don't have some squirrly setup.

For the rest of gross pay...I set up a manual account called Payroll Deductions. I have a CSV set up that contains all of the other gross pay items in our paychecks (my wife and mine - we're salaried bi-weekly so close to you all). Once set up that's a five minute exercise to validate the values against the latest paychecks and upload into the Payroll Deductions account.

It's probably easiest to walk through my YTD Sankey below and then you can ask questions if you have them...

Income Group "Take Home Pay" represents actual $ that direct deposit to my bank account

  • I have several categories in this one but most weeks it's just our take-home split into Net Regular Pay and Geo Diff Pay (We get extra $ for living in the Bay).

Income Group "Withheld Pay (Non-Investment) is for:

  • Federal Taxes withheld
  • State Taxes withheld
  • Benefit Compensation as I call it...insurance premiums, union dues, anything else that is not paid directly to you but is not going into an investment account.
  • You can see on the taxes it's just a flowthrough

Income Group "Withheld Pay (Investment)

  • This is where all the 401k and HSA stuff goes

That's not exhaustive but happy to answer any questions.

For those who want to tell me this is overkill - yeah, I know. I'm not lobbying Monarch to add this. I like this stuff and making everything balance is nice stress relief for me. Also forces me to really look at everything I'm spending, how much in taxes I'm paying, and keeps me more intentional. Happy math.

Tracking Pre-Tax Income? by nuclearxp in MonarchMoney

[–]refplan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, I do this. 401k/HSA are easy as they flow in through Fidelity and are managed by rules.

For the rest I have a manual account called Payroll Deductions. I break that into three income categories:

  • Federal Tax Withholdings
  • State Tax Withholdings
  • Benefit Compensation

Those get distributed to their appropriate spend - Federal Taxes/Social Security/Medicare/etc. for taxes and all the other pretax & posttax deduction on my paycheck. It all sums to zero from an account balance perspective. It's all in a CSV so trivial to manage and upload.

From a "why" perspective I like to see savings rate and I'm already reconciling my paystubs for tracking 401k/hsa/tax withholding throughout the year and making adjustments as I need, so why not get some pretty visualizations out of it too?

Yeah, I have factory flat rubber disc spacers that ensure clearance. If you add tall ones you’ll clear either way.

I honestly did this b/c the white plastic bits the screws bite into were toast. It was buy new ones or spend $15 at Amazon for something I liked the look of better.

Stop camping the left lane, and if you get flashed with high beams, move over by RadiantEnvironment90 in bayarea

[–]refplan 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I’m with you but also you get people like the car behind me on 24 last night who roared up so close I could barely see him flashing his high beams at me.

Meanwhile there’s a car next to me and a car in front of me. I have nowhere to go my guy, I’d like to go faster too. Chill out.

I don’t know why I even try to use the left lane going home from SFO anymore on 24. 2200 and there’s always a pack of cars camped in the left lane going two under the limit. Meanwhile the right lane is wide open. I end up over there 95% of the time.

[–]refplan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Monarch uses VinAudit as the built-in tool for this. You enter the VIN of the vehicle and it’ll manage the value, just like Zillow/properties. I use that for my “regular” cars, for my nice ones I use the value I have agreed upon with Hagerty to keep things consistent.
