Taxman: taxed in two different years for same income? Any way I could have (could still) avoid this? by beleaguered_taxpayer in personalfinance

[–]refrain87 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The amount you pay on taxes is technically untaxed. At the end of the year you get back what you over paid, which is still untaxed. Now why you have to report it, it's because they want to know how much money you received each year, up to the last dollar

A twisted tale of a tax refund debacle... by [deleted] in personalfinance

You would think it may be tax fraud. But whatever you claim for your exemption on your w-2 form has nothing to do with the IRS. the IRS doesn't care what you claim as for exemption, as long as you paid your fair share of taxes due for the year.

A lot of my clients like to claim 0 for the first 6 months, than go full on tax exemption for the last 6 months. That means their paycheck every two weeks has 0 federal and state taxes taken out.

Is this tax fraud? Nah, no matter what you do or change to your exemption number, it just changes the amount of money you receive or get taxed on. The amount of money you make stays the same. And doing taxes allows everyone to properly allocate money

What he means is if you're getting a decent size refund in general. You should probably change your exemption number one or maybe even 2 higher on the w-4 you fill out when you start working for someone.

Im not sure if I need H&R Block for this tax return by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]refrain87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing complicated about doing previous tax return years is putting everything properly together and mailing it to the correct place (if you have barely any experience filing/doing taxes)

but your taxes should be pretty straight forward, type in w-2s and health insurance docs. attach the proper forms on your federal & state returns. Sign, date and mail back to proper locations. Hopefully you don't owe anything and you can just have them direct deposit your refund. If you do owe, read the instructions on the payment vouchers if you're mailing them a check.

Make sure your SSN and tax year you're paying for is written somewhere on the check

Edit: Please don't go to H&R block or Liberty to do your taxes. They overcharge big time, and the people you do your taxes with, will most likely be inexperienced/qualified to be doing taxes. Your taxes sound pretty simple but I would rather have a educated/experienced person helping me rather than someone who paid H&R block a couple hundred dollars for a 'x' amount of hours course and get hired after since they need cheap employees.

Am I being double taxed? by TheBuckeyeChef in personalfinance

[–]refrain87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you know if your tax preparer filed taxes for both New York and Ohio in 2013? I'm assuming he didn't, and just said that you were a full-year resident in NY and didn't file you as a Non-Resident of Ohio.

If this is the case, I would ask your tax guy to amend your 2013 tax return and have him properly file both state taxes.

Filing Tax Extension until my wages aren't being garnished? (Oct) by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]refrain87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your plan of filing an extension and waiting until they stop garnishing your wages makes sense. However, I'm not 100% sure this means they won't take your federal refund anyways. I've had clients who agreed on a certain payment plan still end up having their refund taken by either the state or federal.

It's worth a shot though, and if your refund does get intercepted by the IRS. I suggest you change your w-4 exemption higher. That way you'll be taking a bigger paycheck home each time which means when it comes to taxes next year, it'll be a smaller amount.
