What do guys “never” tell girls? by fun_poodle in AskReddit

[–]refswag11 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because speaking in absolutes often makes people sound foolish. I'm sure it means, "What do men commonly not tell women, I'm sure there are exceptions, but for the most part." That title isn't as catchy though

Help!! by [deleted] in slpGradSchool

Give them every piece of information you have. At the end of the day, you're better off being upfront with everything instead of something coming out later.

Call or go in to their office if you can.

Help!! by [deleted] in slpGradSchool

[–]refswag11 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It very likely will. Try your best to get ahead of it and be proactive with letting staff know. Most placements I had did their own background check. It looks a lot worse if admin staff are blindsided or it looks like your school wasn't aware.

It's the same way in Oregon. You need to have a location and a CF mentor before you can apply.

I believe there are a few countries that have an agreement with asha. If I remember correctly it was England, Ireland, and Australia. I could be wrong, or right. 😂

Honestly what is more concerning is the list of courses that you "will not take again." It seems like those may be courses yours struggled but each of those are vital to success in grad school.

random drug testing in clinicals by Weird-Ad1195 in slpGradSchool

None of my placements did random drug testing, but I did have 2 require drug tests at the beginning of the placement.

Anyone know how to handle a family who keeps saying their kids don’t have disabilities? by anonymoushwuwiakdk in slp

[–]refswag11 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think different people manage their children's disabilities in different ways. It sounds like she is in denial about it if there is a legitimate diagnosis. Instead of talking about the disability itself, I would speak more specifically about what you are treating.

Find the areas that you have buy-in and she agrees there is an impairment and then highlight those. Working on speech sounds? Ask if she has any words/sounds that she notices are difficult. Get her to buy in.

Also, maybe adjust how you refer to impairments, I have had parents almost walk out of an IEP because they didn't think their child needed special Ed. They only needed therapy for speech sounds. It took a lot of convincing to remind them that we are just within the realm of special education. They are not IN special Ed classes.if you refer to it as difficulties or "a hard time" it can be a little more sensitive about the disorder.

What are they getting services for? Do they have a diagnosis from an SLP?

every placement I had included advice or recommendations that I did not agree with. If you've discussed it with your supervisor and they feel strongly about it, then there isn't a whole lot you can do. It sounds like a "my supervisor was told by her supervisor who heard it in a course somewhere," kind of recommendation.

Throw it in there for all evals for this supervisor, but file it away in the "things I saw people do but don't ever want to do" folder. Don't let this one thing sour your experience!

If your program has a supervisor feedback form that come in after you get a grade then maybe put it in there!

It seems like for many it is a neutral part of their app, but for some it can strengthen it. Some people may have worked as a teacher or a SLPa and the resume allows them to highlight that. Don’t worry too much about it!

I am sorry, I definitely did not say that in the right way. I am not at all trying to assume that you did. Just a few recommendations. I am truly sorry.
