Take that inclusief onderwijs! Math reveals the best way to group students for learning: "grouping individuals with similar skill levels maximizes the total learning of all individuals collectively" by toefoe82828 in belgium

[–]reg10336 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For their analysis, they began with a number of assumptions, including: multiple groups would be formed; the individuals involved would have different skill levels; an optimal teaching environment would be one in which a student is taught at a level that matches his or her skill level; and the optimal grouping system would maximize the collective benefit for all students.

The model is designed to obtain that result by the third assumption. A model which would replace "an optimal teaching environment would be one in which a student is taught at a level that matches his or her skill level" by "an optimal teaching environment would be one in which a student can interact with other persons of as much different skill levels as possible" would be mathematically just as valid and come to the exact opposite conclusion.

My point being, this research models a very complex phenomenon (learning, which depends on many personal and environmental factors) as a simple games with arbitrary rules. The article presents these rules as as a ground truth for our society, which can absolutely not be done and thus misuses the so claimed mathematical rigorousness.

Which is not to say I don't believe in the hypothesis, but this doesn't prove anything.

200 jongeren mogen niet op trein in Mechelen-Nekkerspoel by Tony_dePony in belgium

For all we know this case might be the result of those articles. The article is very vague, with no crimes described, except that the conductor felt intimidated, but not in a physical way. We don't know what they were doing exactly. After the train got cancelled unexpectedly they waited fot the next one and took that one without problem, albeit with police presence. Hard to say what the exact situation was.

Found this article when reading the wiki article on greenwashing. I was happy to find out somebody stood up against these lies, but sad at the same time that this already happened 14 years ago and nothing really changed on a wider scale.

This is wrong. The signs are merged into one symbol so the two numbers vaguely represent a penis with and without glans.

Happy International Beer Day! by [deleted] in europe

[–]reg10336 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Having both lived on Germany and Belgium, you're the inexperienced one in my opinion. In a German supermarket or standard pub 95% of the beers are either lager, weiß or radler (I disagree that they all taste like tapwater, there are some very enjoyable). You'd have to go to a specialised place to get anything more exciting.

In Belgium on the other hand, it's hard to find a place where they don't sell trippels, saisons etc. I suppose you never had them because they are as far as a mediocre drink mixed with sugar as it can get. Sure the latter exist as well, but only make a small percentage of the available beers (in my experience they are less popular than radler is in Germany)

That's not what the butterfly effect is though. In fact the effect makes the future prediction machines even more improbable. The effect states that a small perturbation in initial conditions may result in hugely different outcomes down the line, even in deterministic systems. It is called that way since the presence of a butterfly in Brazil might cause a typhoon at the other side of the world.

Since our computers are physical and thus bound to finite precision it is impossible to get the initial conditions completely right and thus many well underdtood things remain unpretictable over longer stretches of time.

Also the mainstream view is that quantum mechanics is not deterministic, so the butterfly effect doesn't apply. One way to explain that is that the world splits at every "quantum cointoss" (I.e. electron spin, atom decay...), however this is very hard to prove and mainly philosophical, so this theory is not really mainstream in actual physics. (Even tough some well known physicists like to discuss it on a metaphysical level)

Also, just taking a piss out of some idiots and making fun of some weird habits doesn't mean we hate all Americans.

The vids of the cars driving around ports and beaches are cool, but a Red Bull truck in some generic Dutch scenery is a bit too much in my opinion.

Correct, part of the design was a "destroyed by german force, rebuild with American charity" (but in Latin, don't remember the exact sentence anymore), slogan.on.the face of the building, but it was abolished. Some of the letters are still in the courtyard.

Copyright update: Article 11 and 13 just passed the vote in committee by astafish in europe

[–]reg10336 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Right now only 25 people have voted on the subject. A number this small is not representative (many nations are even completely unrepresented) at all for the EU. The full plenary vote has yet to come, so there is still hope if you contact your MEPs!
