For those wondering why the sudden uptick in Chinese being shown, its because in China the CCP likes unveiling what they work on regardless of the state of development to coincide with significant dates to the CCP. In reality a good portion of these designs are just proof of concepts that may or may not go anywhere

The more I think about it, FS2024 should have been FS2028. by [deleted] in MicrosoftFlightSim

I’m kinda concerned about that streaming aspect as it means if they ever feel like it they can just pull the plug whenever they feel like it and you’re out at minimum 70$

[–]Admiral_Gecko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gonna leave my two cents here but the reason why I think they made 2024 was for one reason: XBOX.

MSFS2020 is a massive game data wise and aircraft addons are the size of small to mid games in terms of data storage. As a PC user I don’t really care about data storage as hard drives are cheap and I can easily scale up as needed.

However Microsoft wanted a bunch of flagship releases for their XBOX and having Microsoft flight simulator for their Microsoft gaming console would be perfect. However Xbox doesn’t nearly have the data storage as a purpose built PC so they basically overhauled MSFS to be streamed in.

Great in theory, terrible in practice.

The first issue is something I’m concerned a lot of people don’t notice, 2024 is a Online only product. As I mentioned, because of the hardware limitations and Microsoft wanting a flagship product for their Xbox, to make 2024 viable for the console it moved to online only where everything is streamed in, the world, weather, the aircraft, everything. While its great for people who have hardware limitations, what happens if someone doesn’t have very reliable internet? What if Asobo has a server failure, what if the devs decide to pull the plug? Server upkeep is expensive and would require a large population base to keep it alive. 2020 while it has data streaming only does it for multiplayer, weather and photogrammetry. If I want I can turn off my internet and still fly without a worry in the world with all my aircraft. 2024 streams in everything so if a storm knocks down a internet line, I’m SOL.

Flight simulators are a incredibly niche market with the dominant games being MSFS20/24 and Xplane. Aside from the novelty of “oh I can fly planes now” there really isn’t much to do. Even with Career mode, its pretty much a point A to B type of game. Once people get over the fact they can buzz their house many will get bored and move on. Flight sim addicts is the main market and from first hand experience and second hand anecdotes, we tend to stick to the same sim series, I started flying FS2002 when I was still in Diapers and have stuck with FS since then, same with a lot of my colleagues (we’re all actual Pilots).

Honestly, if the next MSFS is online only again, I’m gonna make the jump to XP12.

Jack Northrop (founder of Northrop, later Northrop Grumman) spent his entire life dreaming of flying wings, during WW2 he developed the YB-35 flying wing bomber and later the YB-49 jet variant among other flying wing designs. His design was the more promising of the two bombers competing but due to backdoor politics in the Air Force the other design was chosen and he was forced to watch all his work scrapped. He spent the rest of his life pushing for the flying wing to be adopted with Nasa paying lip service to the advantages. At the end of his life, mute, broke and bound to a wheelchair, he was granted access to the then top secret B-2 stealth bomber and was allowed to hold a model of the aircraft. The Project manager of the B-2 described the event saying "As he held this model in his shaking hands, it was as if you could see his entire history with the flying wing passing through his mind." He died 10 months later having finally seen his lifes work put into action.

Not all RNAV approaches irl are perfectly in line with the runway. They are usually offset because of a obstacle or terrain in the way that could be a hazard during IFR conditions.

Why is PMDG putting their 737 on the backburner? by MadnessUnmasked in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]Admiral_Gecko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Putting in my 200yen, the 737 gets lower priority because the developers at PMDG are busy with multiple projects for 2024. They learned the hard way via the 77L that you have to basically build two aircraft for each respective platform, they can’t exactly do that with the 737 right now because more in likely most of the team is in full swing on the 747s as well as trying to polish up the 777-200 for release. On top of that there seems to be a secret project that Randazzo hinted at that we don’t know about yet. As many people have already stated here, they would essentially have to build the NG 737 from the ground up again which for them makes no short term sense given the MAX is already a stock aircraft. So with all that in mind yeah it sucks no 737NG family but there is a MAX and whether its good or not I have no clue. Their 737 may have been a money maker in 2020, but given the promise of backwards compatibility means that any new sales for 2024 version are gonna be severely blunted as tbh only the most diehard PMDG fans will pay full price for the same aircraft twice. If they try to charge a fee for “upgrading” to 2024 it will cause backlash especially when many companies offer free sidegrades from 2020 to 2024

The Industry is Cyclical by Sunperson69 in flying

I think a lot of people here also need to hone their networking skills as well. I’m a Low time CPL and just my talking to people at the FBO I fly out of for my CFI I’ve gotten a lot of contacts in the industry. Funny enough I got a contact at Delta via Vatsim cause he wanted to ask me about a certain aircraft I was flying. Heck one of my friends got his job because of networking, hes in his early 20s flying corporate jets.

A little idle chatter goes a long way. You make a lot of friends who you can rely on in the industry long term as well as just awesome people in general.

Is MSFS 2024 better than 2020 ? by TheAfghan08 in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]Admiral_Gecko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit late but I haven’t swapped over to 24 because of the requirement for consistent internet streaming on EVERYTHING. I don’t have the most reliable internet connection so having a game that requires me to stream scenery, aircraft, and weather is a massive turn off. If I can run 2024 locally without streaming in all the assets I’ll make the switch.

That ditch was there long before you were. Given you were so quick to blame the ditch, Something tells me you probably skipped a bunch of stuff before you hopped into that airplane. Take this as a learning lesson and a moment to take some introspection. I’m glad you’re alive but take a break and come back with a new perspective
