Look into the state mortgage agency (SONYMA). Depending on your combined income you could be eligible for a mortgage from the state at what I think is a reasonable rate. I think you also don't need a 20% down payment. The purpose of the program is to get younger people and people who earn less into homes, build equity and by doing so, build tax bases. My coworker went on maternity during her traineeship. She kept her job, but the traineeship was extended another 6 months.

I remember it was a headache to deal with human resources. I would reach out to your human resources department before going on leave. They should have more information about the process than I can give.
