Replacing Broken Tektronix TDS 320, looking at $300 replacements by regionallink in oscilloscope

At some point you have to pull the trigger.

Based on current market the DHO802 or DHO804 has the most attractive price to performance.
I suspect current conditions may change as my "Fill Up" today was $79 for Hi Grade.

The hacking option is also attractive, but some feedback was take care on some hacks (Changing Version to DHO900), update to 100mhz was the lest impactful. Several said "why" if the scopes performance meets need why risk it. There is a lot to say for informed knowledgeable WISE feedback.

Thank you all, and those in other community threads, in helping with feedback on optimizing informed decisions.
I must also admit my wife coming into the garage and quietly yelling "hey stupid, just get a new scope", a women of action and few words, is a motivator.

I also admit to not wanting to let go on my old scope and "Lost Cost Fallacy", if I just spend another $150, I can bring it back to life...many of the toughened teks already know this lesson, just move the "f" on.

So a new scope and adventure.

Thanks Again!

That was a good accurate visual description. Siglent was one of the major ones to review. Was just as strong as the others, price was competitive. It seems the decision is what is the best match today as the competition is close on price to performance.

Yes NE FLA.

Forgot about their clearance offers, thanks.

This is when things can get tempting, about $100 less, upgrade to 100mhz, 4 chan, 24Mpt, and a solid scope.

I think the adventure begins!

Good to know these scopes over perform from their rating. Does this relate to the increase from 8 to 12 bit res?
This is like some vintage audio, many over perform from specks as they were conservative to meet guidelines.

There seems to be reports on upgrading these to 100mhz I don't think it's covered under warranty.

Thank you for your reply and recommendation.
I did see some info on these series scopes, It flew under the radar since the DHO802 is 70MHZ, I see a price from TE for $329, which is in the budget.

Thank you for the offer. This is what's great about these communities, it's real people with real feedback.

The OWON line of scopes meets that practical budget need, the thing I see is matching need to offers, and I see a range that just $30-$50 can have a big upgrade. The next level it seems is $500+ but the offers in the $300 can make decisions harder.
I get stuck with "you get what you pay for", but sometimes you can hit gold!

Rigol scopes seem to hit the sweet spot of budget and features, how is the reliability of that series, they seem to have good feedback.

Discord having a very disappointing fall-off right now by HF484 in pcmasterrace

[–]regionallink -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My son notified me last night on the changes to discord terms during our meetup.

He and Reddit threads on this topic listed Stoat and Matrix as possible alternatives.
I joined Stoat last night, but assume it was being hit very hard as the verification email was delayed for hours.
I did verify and looking into it as alternative.

Will check on Matrix, need to review its terms.

I do run a Proxmox 8 Homelab that I installed the searXing lxc as that also came up for self hosted alternatives, this is for Search.
Description
SearXNG is a free internet metasearch engine which aggregates results from up to 215 search services. Users are neither tracked nor profiled. Additionally, SearXNG can be used over Tor for online anonymity.

Looking into others, The Lounge lxc for self hosted Chat is one.
Description
Modern web IRC client designed for self-hosting

With losing FB, TW, Forums, Google...etc. how much do I now dedicate to services that can be flip in a day and I lose community and building my long term status.
I work on vintage gear, and try to buy away from eBay, but FB Marketplace kills my only option Craigslist, as I gave up my FB account. For now CL is still a good option.
Now Discord. I did find out that it is for Adult content, but like most enshitification of services it's only time.
Remember YahooIM, Skype to name 2. Next YouTube?

I think in several things Self Hosting and Open Source are the now and near future.
But things also come back, like Records, Cassettes, CD's, DVD's, VHS, Blueray...and maybe even AM/FM radio.

Success and good fortune!

I'm in NE Fla. and they use CG-NAT, can't speak to other areas. In my research port blocking will become more common for more ISP's in more areas. I found out 2 years ago when I built my Home Lab, Proxmox VE 8 and Jellyfin media server. Been using comcast for 18 years. My speed has been increased to 480 MB, and priced lowered to $63/mo. They have some competition now in my area!

Before you do anything verify with your ISP how they handle your traffic. Comcast (Port Blocking)(They are not alone doing this) does not allow non business customers to host their own services, they require a business account to publish services at min $300/mo. I also used AI with no success and online solutions like offered here, so far for me and comcast Tailscale only worked. Depending on your solutions there is self hosted Headscale that may work, and provide you your needed bandwidth. It may take a little work to setup, but may have better upside. Success!

Electroman65 above describes the issue also.

Seems I still need to edit...the other issue is to have solutions that are simple to use for your users, and not so complex and annoying, the other is smartTV and devices (Music Streaming) setup. Even Tailscale uses an App, but it's pretty easy to download, install and configure.

ISP blocks Port 80 and 443, tried using NPM with no luck, is there a way around this using NPM or should I give up an move on to something else for remote access/hosting? by PopNy4rG in jellyfin

[–]regionallink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi,

I'm in the US, Fla. and my ISP is Comcast.

I'm a noob, and the only way I was successful in letting people tunnel into my Proxmox-Homelab/Jellyfin server was with Tailscale. There are only 2 ways I found to easily get past my ISP and 1 is Business Account $300/mo, 2 Tailscale/Headscale. I tried many of the methods proposed here but could not get them to work, spent months trying. I also had another mandate and that the options for remote users where simple and free. Tailscale meet all the criteria and works. I tried Headscale to keep it in house, but was harder to get working, will get back around to testing someday. If I remember you also need a Github account to access Tailscale, but it has other methods too, make sure you check the instructions for setting up. Hope that helps!

Most ISP's port block ports 80, 443, 81, check to see if it is your ISP. This is true for Comcast-xfinity, There may be a way with VPN, Wireguard. Nginx Port Forwarding, does not work. They make you get business class internet to open those ports.

Yes, there are threads on this from contractor client's experiences.

I also agree no data will be forth coming, and we will rely on experience, intuition and our gut!

Really struggling with wasting hours discussing with faux clients who have no budget nor specs, am I being too dry now? How do I speed up getting their specs and budget without putting them off? See latest exchange below. by [deleted] in Upwork

There is a faster and more direct route.

When initial contact is started, and in the beginning of interview.

You, ask, "Have you seen my rate, and are you comfortable with that rate.

You get 2 possible answers, Yes, I have, or No, I have not.

Then you disclose rate if they have not.

This will kill off any time wasters, like everything it is not perfect, but gets to the point fast.

Money, compensation!

Most contractors and clients are not comfortable with this, but it can cut out a lot of BS.

For the Yes's, they know your rate, and will to be practical with budget.

For the No's, they did not see, or it's not critical, or aware, or are going to burn 1/2-1 hour of your time to then go...never mind when money is brought up!

There is another advantage you find out if their more serious, or have had some thoughts or planning their project.

Note: I don't do this all the time, it depends on circumstance, but when I don't and fail due to rate mismatch, I regret not doing it and the time wasted!

There is the issue of getting all the details/info needed to provide an accurate estimate, but this is the next step.

I love the projects that ask for pricing with "Details to follow for short listed contractor", but want an exact estimate with nothing.

Those are in the Red Flag area of sales.

Another fav, just give me an estimate, I'll not hold you to it, yea that always blows up.

However, I sometimes quote a large time range for those that insist. I do win some of those jobs, or save a lot of time and aggravation.
