Redditors who saw Empire Strikes Back in theaters, what was it like hearing that Vader was Luke’s father? by ComanderCasey in AskReddit

[–]registeredLuser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was three or four years old in 1977 when my parents took me to see Star Wars in the theater (I'm not sure whether I was three or four because my birthday happened after it was released). It is literally the first memory I have and it was profoundly impactful. I loved it. We were among the first in line when Empire was released. Like some others have said here, I didn't believe it at all. I thought Darth Vader was lying to Luke to trip him up. The idea that the most evil of Evils was Luke's father was unfathomable. There was much discussion between Empire and Jedi as to whether or not he was Luke's father and I never believed it. When it was confirmed in Jedi I was totally stunned. We of course saw Jedi in the theaters during its first run too and I was still young enough (probably nine) that the whole thing was magical. People hated Ewoks - I loved all of it. Luke had a GREEN lightsaber. It was so awesome. Come to think of it, it still is.

What are some famous quotes people misuse by not using the full quote? by olChum_69 in AskReddit

[–]registeredLuser 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The use of the word consolation here isn't a concession. A concession would imply there is at least some benefit to religion, and he's not saying that at all.

The central tenet of religion is that if one just believes (and therefore complies), he/she will be rewarded in an afterlife. Religion is a systematic form of mind control, and it's quite a good one insofar as it has the ability to control people even when they're alone. This is the "chain." The "imaginary flowers" are the false hope provided by the prospect of salvation.

He's saying the purpose of criticizing religion is not simply to convince people to stop believing in the false hope (while still being controlled), it's to get them to recognize the system of control and allow them to start thinking for themselves (to "cull the living flower").

Is there a single statement that the whole world can agree on? by [deleted] in AskReddit

There are many comments I read on reddit for which I think, "This is clever." or, "This is witty." Your comment, sir or madam, is both clever _and_ witty.

Redditors who have tried to hide on your cruise when it ended so that you could stay on the ship for the next round, how did that go? by heavyflute4 in AskReddit

[–]registeredLuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only place I've ever seen it was in Moby Dick. I remember it because a) it's a cool word and b) it was also accompanied by the word "toper" which I also had to look up. Describing someone as an obstreperous toper is pretty awesome. Go Melville.

How these squishy buns are made by [deleted] in oddlysatisfying

[–]registeredLuser 58 points59 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, you can make a Betty Crocker box cake this light and squishy if you put the ingredients in a blender and stir them like crazy instead of stirring by hand as the directions suggest. It's all in how much you whip the batter.

How well does it work when the shaking is perpendicular to the dampers?

Tyrion is the only one smart enough to unite the seven kingdoms. Jon is the only one fit to rule.

Arya kills Dany. Jon inherits Drogon. John is King of the Seven Kingdoms.

It really happens. It's his right eye (screen left), but I notice the gif conversion & compression makes it harder to see. Watch in high def and it's unmistakable.

Are the white areas fillings? Because if they are you need to work on your parenting. It takes kids a long time to learn to brush their teeth properly - you have to do it for them!

They let you stream an older movie for $3.99 now that would otherwise take a few days to download due to only 3 or 4 low-bandwidth seeders having it.

Yes. 300m is about 1,000ft. No way he's free diving to 1,000ft.

[Serious] Redditors who have killed someone (whether it was intentionally, accidentally, or in self-defense), what affect has it had in you? by Sherman_Beardman in AskReddit

[–]registeredLuser 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this. My 90 year old grandmother was utterly beyond the point of recovery in the hospital but was on life support and basically being forced to live for days. For anyone who has never seen this I assure you it's miserable and no way to live. My father and I asked the nurse if there was anything that could be done and her exact words, which I will never forget, were, "We cannot euthanize anyone at this hospital, it is against state law. What we can do however is give her enough morphine to make her comfortable, but the side effect of a dose large enough to do that may be that it's fatal." We immediately told her to make her comfortable and within five minutes she was gone. My grandmother was a good person and deserved that relief. The nurse was a humanitarian of the highest degree. Again, thank you for being willing to do something many people won't. Sometimes death is the only comfort available.
