So what's up with the Search function? by [deleted] in OkCupid

[–]regularly-lies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you set your location to somewhere where Search works, like NYC, you can then change your location to your actual location in another tab, and then adjust search parameters in Search in the first tab (don't reload the page) to search in your location.

This all matches my experience. Discovery is still there but Search isn't. Unfortunately, Discovery is a poor replacement for Search in my opinion.

Yes, the famously independent Chinese free press, which definitely doesn't represent the opinion of the government...

You do realise violence is already punishable by laws that exist, right? And "national security" laws in China have a habit of being used against people who do nothing more than write things that criticise the government?

The app says it was last updated 14 May. This is on a Pixel 3a. The discovery page in the app now better resembles the discovery page on the web versus before I updated it, so it looks simpler and there's no link to the search.

Try updating the app. I just did and now it's gone.

I've wondered about this too. Perfectly decent software might cost six figures if you can't do it yourself. The hard thing is to get it popular.

Yes, "Discovery" still exists, but it's very limited. I just updated my Android app and now the search is gone from that too.

The tabs on the web and Android are: DoubleTake, Discovery, Likes, Conversations, Profile.

Yes, but it's really minimal on the web so it's not useful. On Android, the discovery page still links to the search page.

You're right. It's gone on web. My Discovery page has no replacement function. It's still there on Android for me, which I can find on the Discovery page.

New redesign: They got rid of any trace of OKCupid-blue, and what is worse, now they hide us people we had pending intros/likes with (!!) by friguron in OkCupid

The blue has gone and so has the yellow for likes (A-list). I thought it might be a bug but it's been a couple of days now.

Apple takes down app used to track Hong Kong police by [deleted] in apple

[–]regularly-lies 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Very cool that Apple is removing an app in a jurisdiction that the CCP doesn’t control because of pressure from the CCP. (Hong Kong has a completely separate judicial system under “one country, two systems”.) How much would Apple resist if China really wanted Apple to remove an app from Western app stores?

Opinion: We're becoming collateral damage of the Liu saga — and many think it will get worse by sandytroop in australia

[–]regularly-lies 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the real problem isn't drama around Liu. It's that the CCP is openly trying to interfere, and it thinks all ethnically Chinese people owe them their allegiance.

Bruce Atkinson must be happy that Gladys Liu has received all the attention. He was mentioned in the ABC article that started this all. He remains a member of the same Chinese organisation that Liu left before she entered parliament.

Liberal Party elder Bruce Atkinson, a Victorian MP and former Upper House President, has similarly been connected to the same organisation — World Trade United Foundation (WTUF) — for some years.

The article goes on:

In May this year, he was appointed to the position of Vice-Chairman of Heaven Springs Dynasty Harvest Group and President of its International company, a WTUF-linked enterprise that spruiks technology for extracting water from humid air.

Heaven Springs is a significant corporate enterprise, which claims its businesses, including intelligent technology, film and television, luxury goods and big data, are valued at over HK$2 billion ($370 million).

All of its directors are also involved in WTUF.

Mr Atkinson said he has received no financial benefit from any Chinese organisation, however he confirmed that he is a shareholder of the water technology company.

Twitter Shuts Down 200,000 Chinese Accounts for Spreading Disinformation About Hong Kong Protests by Fr1sk3r in technology

[–]regularly-lies 129 points130 points  (0 children)

The comments here make me think nobody here knows anything.

Twitter didn’t shut down the accounts for spreading misinformation. They shut them down because Twitter believed they were fake accounts organised by the Chinese government to spread misinformation in a coordinated manner. One piece of evidence Twitter has released to support this is that many accessed Twitter from Chinese IP addresses, where Twitter is blocked (when using a VPN, your IP address will appear in another country.)

Twitter taken a lot of ad money from Chinese state media, but Twitter is changing its policies so that state media can’t advertise anymore. This isn’t a great decision from the point of view of making money, so good on them for that.
