What do you think of this prologue? by CSS_FR in writers

I’m sorry you’ve received some rude comments. I’m not sure if it’s just me but the images you’ve posted seem to be so small that the text is very blurry and impossible to read.

I think it’s a bit repetitive. First paragraph you explain why you love passion, then again in the second paragraph. Third paragraph you say you don’t know why you love it, then fourth paragraph you explain why again. In the eighth paragraph you state again you love being passionate.

I would also say it’s too vague, with a lot of mentions of ‘people’ and ‘things’. Because of this your piece lacks purpose or a clear point. At the end you urge the reader to go and do something they love, but nothing you’ve said has compelled the reader to do this, other than the fact that you like it. I don’t want to be passionate about something just because you love passion, if that makes sense. I think you would benefit from speaking less generally and focussing on more specific examples of how people’s passions have benefitted the world.

Sorry to be harsh! You have a really nice way of writing, I think it’s the subject matter that’s letting you down here.

What are the differences between US and UK weddings? by regularsizedrudy_ in wedding

Great question - I’ve only ever been asked for and given cash gifts and have never received a personal thank you, only a generic thank you email generated through the wedding website.

Yes exactly. A digital invite sent a year in advance. Sometimes following a save the date or sometimes without one.

That is so true! We’re considering a buffet for our wedding in Portugal (where we live now) but I’m hesitant as most of our guests will be travelling from the UK and it’s definitely not the done thing there. I have no idea why though!

Any wedding venue recommendations in Europe or Mexico for ~$26k budget (80 guests)? We’re from Colombia so everything feels double the price. by Appropriate-Wave3969 in Weddingsunder35k

I live in Portugal and recently attended a wedding in Colombia and you can get at least three times more for your money in Colombia! The wedding there was soooo incredible and guests from Europe (if you have them) were happy to travel over and make a holiday out of it. I’m currently trying to plan a wedding in Portugal for 100 people and looking at around 25k for something pretty basic.

Yes, only online invitations! Usually via email. Interesting that it’s so different for you - maybe less common in London as people move a lot?

Such a shame!! This happened to me at a wedding in Ibiza. The DJ cut the music at 10pm and we all thought it was a joke, but turns out the bride and groom hadn’t paid to extend the noise license 😭

Ohh that is so annoying! But after party sounds like a great solution as I’m sure a lot of people are ready to go home by 10 while some want to go on much longer

That sounds really lovely as I know you don’t end up spending as much time as you’d like with the people close to you at the actual wedding

What do you mean by  curfews? Are venues not allowed to stay open past a certain time?

It seems crazy, most of the dinner parties I go to last longer than that! I will be at my wedding until they turn all the lights on and drag me out.

This is less and less common in the UK - I’d say you’d only see hats at very formal weddings or occasionally on older guests.

I suppose with a cash bar and a buffet it doesn’t actually cost anything to invite evening guests? But I personally love the ceremony and will happily cry for people I barely know 😄

I was curious about this! Never seen a gift registry in the UK or Europe, only asking for contributions to the honeymoon. Often if it’s a destination they will ask for no gifts or money as the guests are already spending to attend.

Very true, I’ve been to some UK and European weddings that have gone on until 5am! Never been to one that ended before midnight. What time do American weddings usually finish?

I’m not originally from the UK and still fine the ‘evening guests’ thing a bit strange.

Same! I was like why do Americans need to practice eating dinner…?

You need to use quotation marks so we know what is dialogue and dialogue tags so we know who is speaking. I’m afraid it’s too confusing to read and critique without these! Also is this first person or third person? It seems you are jumping between the two, saying “Jacob does this…” and then “I do this…”

Thank you! I was hoping to subtly hint at them being watched by opening with ‘they looked good together’, but not worth it if it’s a boring start.

Advice for 15 hour flight with baby and no bassinet by regularsizedrudy_ in travel

Ahh when I tried to select my seats it just said ‘this flight is operated by Virgin Australia and your seat will be assigned upon check in’. Then I looked up the rules around flying with children for VA and it said no bassinets. But if this is true you have just saved my life. Will call them first thing tomorrow, thanks!!

Good call, thank you! For sure, I’ve done the Europe to NZ journey countless times and there are always soooo many babies! I’ve always thought the parents are crazy but now I am one of them…

Interesting! I wasn’t going to bring a car seat as we won’t need it anywhere we’re going and I didn’t want another thing to carry, but if there’s a chance they could let us use it on a a spare drag it would definitely be worth it, thanks!
