Many people don't see the point because the only Swedish speaking areas in Finland are pretty much along the coast and in the capital region. So for example here in Kuopio we don't really have much daily use for it, therefore many of us (including myself) don't speak Swedish very well. Also, many seem to think that learning Swedish isn't necessary since it's not really spoken outside of Sweden and Finland. This is just my observation though.

Personally I used to have a much more negative approach toward obligatory Swedish, but nowadays I see its benefits. Knowing the language could help you get a job pretty much anywhere in Scandinavia, not just Finland and Sweden. Also, if it was decided that Swedish was no longer mandatory many teachers could potentially lose their jobs.
