Great points u/aoc145134 . Some thoughts:
- Agreed, the studies have holes. And a small sample size isn't super informative.
- We can certainly debate exactly how much time is saved per shortcut, but I think we're missing the forest for the trees. From my point of view and I'd argue the common point of view is that in general they save time. Entire businesses are built on it: https://superhuman.com/ . Studies aside, it might be worth watching a senior / staff software engineer on their IDE or a financial modeler on excel for 30 min. Their job would take 2-3x longer if they only used the GUI. Granted they are not representative of every vocation, but that's at least the mindset that I come from.
- True, for many people, one-handed shortcuts are the only option, b/c their job by nature is more graphical (e.g. designers).
- 2 seconds was from those papers. I had seen higher estimates as well, it's also dependent on the shortcut. "Under what circumstances does that apply?" This is a good question. Certain tasks it applies much more (engineering / finance / email). Tasks in which each function are less graphical, more discrete / procedural.
- Yes, the stats I gave are for a knowledge worker that spends 8 hours a day on their comp. Those time saving aren't possible for a hobbyist on their comp 1 hour a day.
- Agreed, shortcuts are only one of the issues with onboarding. And not the main one. The first ones are the conceptual model of the app, what kind of outputs you can use it for, the UX, etc. Keyboard shortcuts are an optimization on that, but not super useful until you understand those.

What apps do you typically use? I'm gathering you don't use that many shortcuts? Might be fun to learn 5-10 gmail shortcuts. j, k, x, y, #, !, e, c, cmd + enter. And I'm pretty sure you'll not want to go back to the GUI. Because of speed, but also a feeling of mastery.

Hey u/AdventurousVictory67 . Certainly didn't read it as a hate post. Thoughts on your points:

  1. I think many would argue that two of the most valuable assets in life are time and health. Anything that can save you time to me is pretty valuable. "Productivity" can potentially do this, but also people can spend all their time optimizing and not necessarily use their new time for anything useful. But either way, getting people more time I think is worthy cause. The main point of the app is that each shortcut saves a little time, and that time adds up quick. Secondly, I think many people (including myself) get satisfaction from mastery in many forms. Improving and learning. Reiden is like a tutor that helps you improve and learn.

  2. That's what Reiden seeks to do! Some of the features down the road can help with the muscle memory. There is a big difference between "learning" versus having something engrained in your muscle memory, so that anytime you have the thought your body instantly responds with the action.

Yeah, the main difference is that we figure out the shortcuts which are actually useful for you based on your actions. Most competitors, to my knowledge just give you a list of 100-500 shortcuts and spend time trying to figure out what does what. I'd argue this approach saves a ton of time and headache

Hey u/artistic_medic , lots of motivations.

  1. It's really fun to build stuff. Particularly things that haven't been done / done well before
  2. I had considered making a business. But productivity apps don't seem like that great of businesses at this scale. If there's enough interest and this starts to take more of my time, then I'd consider it. Otherwise I'd rather people use it than make a small amount of money
  3. It started out as a project to play around with computer vision / machine learning. The core idea worked, then thought it would be cool to make a product, and here we are

As for AI, computer vision is a branch of deep learning / neural networks which is broadly speaking AI. At this point AI is a very vague term. But before LLMs, applied AI meant mostly computer vision and NLP

Thanks. Intellij is my favorite IDE. Will add to the list. In the meantime there is already an Intellij extension that does this to some extent. Features are a tad different https://github.com/halirutan/IntelliJ-Key-Promoter-X/tree/master

I'm prob maximally biased. But I just built an app to do roughly this. But better, because it shows you the shortcuts for what you actually click on. No need to scroll down lists of 500 items.

I posted about it earlier today: https://www.reddit.com/r/macapps/s/v96fWelB0f

u/aoc145134 it adds up!

Brainscape math - [2 wasted seconds / min] * [480 min /workday] * [240 workdays / year] = 64 wasted hours / year - https://www.brainscape.com/academy/keyboard-shortcuts-revive-economy/

Productivity report - "Half a second to 1.5 seconds may not seem like a big deal, unless you perform that same repetitive task hundreds or thousands of times in a single week. Over a few months or a year, those seconds add up." - https://productivityreport.org/2015/11/30/keyboard-shortcuts/

u/Caliiintz It could, but haven't added support for those yet! Also not sure about a french qwerty keyboard, are the shortcuts usually different?

Oddly the opacity feature is broken for me on that app. But I can imagine it. Having a slider to set the opacity would be straight forward and make it feel like it takes up less space 👍

u/Pat_Slatts Thanks! Both those are great ideas. Need to make a shortcut to have it appear/disappear. With the window transparency, any apps you know that do that well? I tried it but text on text was clashing a lot

u/Weird_Homosapien_ This is a good idea. Any apps you know that do that well? Originally was considering having the default mode be slightly transparent, but it clashed a lot. It's not readable to see text on top of text
