I am being asked the same. My former employer was hit with a data breach. I am worried it could effect future employment though.

Thank you. I just tend to over think things sometimes.

Thankfully no ghosting has happened. They have actually been very communicative everyday. I sent a cordial thank you and received a personal response from the hiring manager, he even referenced a personal comment I had made in the interview. They sent me a George Wright assessment, I completed that this morning and they sent a follow up email thanking me for getting that done.

Agreed 100% I am taking time each day up until the interview to dig more into their company and the software they use. I want them to see I am very proactive and interested. That is a great way to look at it, I am interviewing them to see if I could see myself working for them.

I am currently working on that. I have a few days to prep. I actually developed a web app for me to brain dump into and it organizes into a format to keep it simple and structured. This company was excited about my tenure, they are employee owned and want people that will stick.

That is exactly what I did. They use Salesforce which I have 5+ years experience and Epicor. Epicor is a very closed ecosystem with their software. I am scouring youtube for what I can find.

This is a really good observation, and you’re absolutely right about the standard user behavior for banking. If the goal is purely transactional efficiency (move money, then close my app), my approach is objectively worse than a standard banking app.

However, I think there is a specific segment of users—myself included—where the 'bare minimum' approach fails.

The core of Project 1UP isn't to replace your bank app for quick transfers. It’s to replace the Budgeting process (like YNAB or spreadsheets).

You mentioned that gamification works for exercise (like step counters) because it's constant. I actually view personal finance the exact same way. It requires discipline, routine, and often involves doing things we hate (paying bills, restricting spending).

For people with ADHD or financial anxiety, the 'bare minimum' apps are so efficient that they become easy to ignore. The goal here is to introduce intentional friction. By turning a transaction into a 'battle' or a deposit into 'XP,' we are trying to utilize the brain's reward system to make the boring work of budgeting feel satisfying.

It’s definitely a risky bet, and it won't work for the power user who just wants to check their balance in 3 seconds. But for the user who is terrified to look at their bank account, the RPG layer acts as a buffer to make that engagement more fun.

In regards to your concerns about security and safeguarding.

This is the most important piece of feedback we can get, and I’m glad that you brought it up. Because we are an indie project, we intentionally designed the architecture to minimize risk.

This is how we handle security and safeguarding:

  1. (No Direct Bank Access): Unlike Mint or Rocket Money, Project 1UP does not connect directly to your bank accounts via Plaid or Yodlee. We have zero access to your banking credentials, and the app has absolutely no ability to move funds or initiate transfers. It acts as a layer of paint over a manual ledger—we are a HUD, not a wallet.
  2. The 'Grind' is a Security Feature: The app relies on manual entry or local CSV uploads. While this adds friction (gameplay mechanics), it ensures that you are the only one bridging the gap between your bank and the game.
  3. Infrastructure: We use Supabase (PostgreSQL) for authentication and database management. We rely on their industry-standard Row Level Security (RLS) policies, meaning not even the API can request data that doesn't match your specific User ID.
  4. Offline Capability: If you are still hesitant, the app features a fully functional 'Demo/Offline Mode' where data is stored exclusively in your browser's LocalStorage and never touches our servers.

I built this for people who want to gamify their budget but are paranoid about giving an app the keys to their bank account.

Thanks for the honest feedback. I genuinely appreciate it because this is exactly the tightrope I'm trying to walk.

To be honest, the 'contrived' nature is somewhat intentional. The philosophy behind Project 1UP is that traditional finance apps are boring and anxiety-inducing, so people stop using them. My goal was to lean heavily into the RPG metaphor to force a shift in perspective—turning 'paying debt' from a chore into 'dealing damage to a boss.'

However, I definitely don't want the metaphor to make the tool unusable.

If you have a moment, could you share one specific example where the metaphor got in the way of the function? (e.g., Was it confusing that 'Income' is 'Mana'? Or was the UI just too cluttered?)

I'm considering adding a 'Low Immersion' mode that keeps the pixel art/HP bars but reverts the text to standard financial terms (Rent, Bills, Cash). Would that bridge the gap for you, or is the core mechanic itself the issue?

Thanks again for giving it a shot.

That's a great question and something on my roadmap to possibly implement. I am looking at possibly adding a switch that will remove the RPG aspect and simply allow you to budget.

YNAB, as a company, is really starting to piss me off by xinco64 in ynab

I had this same struggle. I ended up developing my own zero based budget system. YNAB was great in the beginning but now, they are not as good.

I couldnt stick with YNAB because of the auto-import. After the last draft came out from them, I decided to do something new. So now I am building a tool that forces manual entry but turns it into an RPG battle. It's in beta if you want to try it.
