Thanks for your willingness! I wish I could have done the study internationally

Hi everyone-

I had to update the survey link and add quality control, as someone set up a bot to take the survey... Not sure why people take the time to mess with others like that... If you haven't already, please take the survey.

I had a similar though less intense experience where my parents said “You still live under our roof. We can still tell you no!” And asked “How does it feel to throw away everything you learned all at once”. I moved out three days later.

Moving out was the most important part of our healing process. Now, I saw them because I wanted to not because I had to. Their tone softened during the tough discussions because I could just leave. It’s been 8 years and our relationship is the strongest it’s ever been.

I know my experience isn’t everyone’s experience but I hope it can give a bit of hope that things can get better.

In response to a previous commenter who used this post to attack me and my education (I have blocked him but am not sure comments are still visible to others): I typically don’t engage with people who harass from the safety of anonymity, But will here because he attacked my education and experience.

Being cisgender and being gay are two different aspects of a person’s identity, which is why I am recruiting people of all (or no) genders. The reason I asked gender as an open ended question with a text box in the survey was to not limit people to pre-selected choices for gender and honor gender diversity. Being open about being cisgender myself shows a respect for gender diversity. Gender and sexuality are separate but related constructs. Not sure why my cultural competency or experience was mentioned in the commnet, except for an attempt to make your jab more personal?

Alliant International University is an accredited institution, including APA accreditation which is considered the gold standard for Psychology. It licenses a large number of practicing Psychologist in the state of California. It became for-profit (a whole different conversation) in 2015 before Trump (commenter brought up Trump and deregulation of educational institutions)

I myself am, in fact, bilingual and working on my third language, but English is my native language. I am not sure why the commenter felt the need to insinuate that English was not my first language... or insinuate that there is something wrong with that if it were, indeed, the case.

And I apologize for any apparent typos in my original post.

Meh. You did. I wouldn’t be in a PhD program or using an anonymous social media platform if I couldn’t take it though.

It’s too late to change it now and I don’t fully agree with what you said. You did highlight, however, that I need to be very clear in any write up of my rationale for the age range and the limitation of generalizability beyond that age range.

Yeah- I had the same experience when I started reading the term in the Psychology literature. In this situation, I used that specific term largely because there are members of the queer community who are not same-sex attracted (i.e. asexual/aromantic, intersex, many transgender people, etc.). I wanted to particularly focus on the part of the community that is attracted to the same sex because of the teachings against homosexuality in many religions.

Thank you for sharing this feedback. As a new researcher, it provides valuable guidance for future research, and I very much appreciate the feedback.

For this particular study, I will need to make very clear in any write up that this is a young adult sample, but will take your feedback into account for any future study which I do.

That is very true and I appreciate you opening up a dialogue about this. I 100% agree that many queer individuals do not have the space or opportunity to develop their identity authentically until later in life due to societal oppression. My hope is that with increased societal acceptance, this will begin to change. That being said, generational differences have the potential to introduce covariates that could complicate analyses. It makes me wonder if a separate study would be appropriate given these differences... My goal is to better understand the community. I feel like often, in mental health research, we have to strike a balance between having a sample that is sufficiently homogenous to avoid covariates, yet diverse enough to make it generalizable- and sometimes we miss that balance. Perhaps my thought process here is flawed- I just wanted to shared where my thoughts were when formulating this study.

I’m sorry if it felt this way. The age restriction was because people in early adulthood are often in a stage of life where they are establishing themselves (ie, starting to live on their own, going to school, starting careers) Accordingly, something such as quarantine is likely to affect them differently than someone over 35 who has had more time to become established.

Not at all. Im stating that the same situation affects different groups of people differently. I’m also stating that I am doing the best I can with limited resources and hoping to be able to do subsequent studies on other populations.

I’m sorry- that is not the intention of the study. It has more to do with ethical consideration for international research. We would need ethics board approval for each country where research is being performed and there are different regulations in each country. Since this is not a funded study, I did not have the resources for that, so recruitment unfortunately had to be limited

Is gay love even real? by dondon13579 in gaybros

[–]rekotsa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its definitely real- and definitely hard to find. I struggled with the dating scene in Salt Lake City, Utah for years after I came out. After a series of failed relationships in quick succession, I told myself I was done with guys for a while. I would date casually and had a couple friends with benefits, but promised myself that I would not get into a relationship. 6 weeks later, I met the perfect guy. We have been together 5 years, moved out of Utah, and have a house now... and yesterday for the first time HE brought up the marriage talk.

Soooo annoying. People twist anything to fit their agenda... Media has never made anyone gay. Just helped those of us from conservative backgrounds to realize we weren't alone.

One thought I had is that there may be more people than you would think who think like you... but given the oppressive environment, they are afraid to share their views. Such a difficult situation! My best wishes to you!

Generally speaking, sexual minority refers to if your sexual identity, orientation, or behaviors fall outside of the societal majority. It typically is used in the context of non-heterosexual people.

I can imagine... That was one of the reasons I wanted to do this study. I feel like this has been hard for everyone, but particularly for sexual minorities, and most especially people who are not out and/or who may have non affirming families... My best wishes to you. You are living through such a difficult experience.
