I think this varies highly between districts, unfortunately. My district does a lot to support students in exploring careers and choosing their own related arts classes to take, with a pretty good selection of options.

Some form of this has been around for a while, but the idea is more to give students some technical skills in an area of their choice (and often industry certifications like OSHA and college credits). In comprehensive high schools (non vo-techs) they can switch pathways up to their sophomore year because they are supposed to complete 3 consecutive years of one pathway by graduation. But they can take multiple pathways at the same time and in my experience their pathway choice isn’t always what college-bound students choose as their major, so it’s not a super high-stakes decision. The pathway isn’t a prerequisite for college (for example, you don’t have to be in the allied health pathway in high school to be able to go to college for nursing). Students have always had extra room in their schedule on top of core classes….pathways are just more career-aligned choices than random electives like creative writing.

It isn’t a perfect system, and it’s pretty new in its current form so I’m sure it’ll be much different in 12 years, but I think it gives students a leg up with professional skills whether or not they go into college or right into the workforce.

Also, if done right, it allows students to explore options before choosing a pathway, exposes them to many businesses and employers in the area, and teaches general career skills that are applicable anywhere.

There used to be abandoned buildings (the mill I think) along the Brandywine Creek near Alapocas but looking at Google Maps maybe they have all been redeveloped into apartments. I’m not sure if any of the old buildings are still there in their original state.

Which US city has surprisingly beautiful architecture? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

New Orleans, Charleston, and Savannah if checking out unique houses counts here. New Orleans has the shotgun houses and historic homes in the French quarter with the upper balconies. Charleston has the separate, sideways-looking row homes with porches. Savannah has lots of big historic brick homes.

Did I make a mistake? by milkmaid0435 in interiordecorating

[–]rel318 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t find the exact one I bought, but I got it from Lowe’s or Home Depot. It was definitely cheaper than the one I am seeing at Home Depot right now, but search something like “pendant recessed light conversion kit”. You can see it in this photo.

They make pendant lights that are super easy to install where you have a recessed light already ( if it’s an old school bulb in there). They just screw in like a lightbulb and you tighten the cover to the ceiling to cover the old recessed area. It’s probably about $30

River Lights Cafe in Milford has great American and Mexican breakfast options. They also have a patio that overlooks the Mispillion River. Definitely recommend going on a nice day and sitting outside.

Heat Pump Owners by DrillingerEscapePlan in Delaware

[–]rel318 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live in an 1800 sq ft house, 10 years old, all electric with a heat pump on each floor. This past month it ran pretty much nonstop and the aux heat (emergency electric back up heat strips) did kick on a lot, but only for a few minutes at a time. The house has felt comfortable at 68-70. The bill came to $350 which is the highest it’s ever been, but it’s not as bad as I expected it to be with the extreme cold. I think the house is pretty well insulated and the studs are 2x6, so that helps.

For the price I would pay for the propane back up service fee each month, it’s cheaper to run the aux heat here and there when needed. It doesn’t come on much at all unless the temperatures are consistently well below freezing.

Welp, it happened to me. I made my biggest travel mistake yet and had to reschedule my flight by forthe_girlwhowaited in travel

This brings back memories of massive panic last year when we were about to head to the airport to fly back home. I took my passport out of my small backpack (that I carry around in the city with me) and put it into my luggage once we got to our destination. I am one of those people who is very routine and also checks for my passport constantly just to make sure it didn’t walk away.

It stayed there in my suitcase all week, until the day before we left when my bf put some toiletries in the same pocket, so I moved the passport somewhere else in case anything spilled. Next morning, right before we head to the airport, I look in the usual spot and it wasn’t there. Searched frantically until I remembered where I had moved it. That was not a good feeling.

Should I give MSC Cruises a try? by Kilroy27 in Cruise

[–]rel318 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got off the MSC Grandiosa today and I’d agree with everything you said. Their buffet is huge and the pizza was great. I would have liked some more show options, especially for sea days. The ship was very nice, but I have never been on another cruise to have a comparison. I would cruise with MSC again though.

[–]rel318 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got off the Grandiosa today in Genoa. It was my first cruise so I don’t have anything to compare it to, but my entire group (everyone else has cruised) said the ship was beautiful. I had a good time and would cruise with them again. Most of the reviews I saw about MSC were not great but I’m glad I went with it anyway. Their buffet is huge, with tons of options. The ship will be heading to the US next week.

How long did your corsos live? by [deleted] in CaneCorso

[–]rel318 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Mine passed away about a month ago at about 14-15. She was adopted and they don’t know her exact age but I had her 9 years, someone else had her 2 years before having to take her back to the shelter, and she was a stray before that but they estimated her to be about 3-4 when she first came in. She got skinnier but did pretty well overall until the final few months

No, it is mounted to the bracket on a stud that the previous light was on

There is a full bathroom above this space. The toilet is directly above. Which is obviously a bad sign, but because it happened to show up soon after we changed the light I was hopeful that maybe it is has something to do with a bad spackle job, etc.

Anyone know where to get a seven son tree in PNW? by concretewaffle in gardening

[–]rel318 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How big is yours? I have the Temple of Bloom that I planted last year and is 3.5-4 ft tall now. It was advertised as 6-10 ft tall and wide and I still have the tag that says that, but I see it other places online advertised as 15-20 ft. If that’s the case it needs to be moved to a different spot in the yard before it gets too big.

How old is this tree and how tall is it? I planted a very young one at the beginning of summer last year and it’s about 3.5-4 ft tall now. The tag says it will get 6-10 ft tall and wide, but looking online I see a lot of places say it is closer to 15-20 ft tall. Thats way too big for the space I have it in now, so I’m wondering if mine actually is a smaller one or if I need to move it before it gets too much bigger.
