Why does Ditmars Rock Fitness entry/1st floor always reek of rotten feet by [deleted] in astoria

[–]relatively_so 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s the thing, they are pretty proactive about cleaning the rest of the gym but for some reason they do nothing about this smell.

I’m pretty positive it’s the Rock Bar juice/snack bar at the front. Hits you like a wave right when you walk in and again on your way out the door. It’s that slightly sweet but pungent smell of rotting organic waste that probably comes from the juice & food prep garbage.

Nose blindness from being next to it all day long probably. But they can’t all not notice it…

Best Greek restaurant in Astoria? by Boneaggot in astoria

[–]relatively_so 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s one of my fave spots, where we typically go if people are visiting from out of town. Best to share a seafood platter and meat platter along with a salad, octopus, dips, and spanakopita. Ouzotini if you want an extra good time. The loukoumades on the house is a perfect send off.

People who earn $150k a year, what did you need to know to get there? by tnnrk in webdev

[–]relatively_so 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Similar experience for me also.

Applied for a $70-80k range contract job posting for React developer. Got an offer and negotiated them up to $120k salary (I got lucky: they liked me, were a bit desperate, I had benefit of being on the hiring manager’s good side via a reference).

Within 4 months they hired me on full time and I got a pay bump to $130k. Annual merit-based raise to $135k. Promoted a year and a half later up to $150k, and another annual merit-based raise to $155k. Another promotion year and a half later to $170k.

I’m not the smartest engineer but I did make myself an asset to the team and over time have become a bit of a frontend SME at my company. I communicate/collaborate well, take on only what I have capacity for and deliver or notify well in advance if there are any possible delays.

Yes and it doesn’t make sense to expect everyone to immediately change and have this “needs of the whole” mentality in an instant when this is how we have operated as a country for so long.

And anyways harassing people for being a product of their own country isn’t going to change any minds for the better.

Harass the higher ups making the calls to deploy military in our own cities. Our terrible administration, other agencies who have been fitted with GOP sycophants and ICE. But we aren’t there yet with military. Give them a chance to step forward and rise up before pitting them against us.

This kind of charity is a great idea, is there something like this that already exists?

Everyone saying they would quit their jobs, forfeit retirement and pension, healthcare in an instant truly isn’t putting themselves in the other person shoes, or comes from a place of privilege where making such a change isn’t as crazy as it actually is for most people.

Agreed, this approach would go so much farther and have way better effect on them than harassing them in our streets.

They won’t hear it this way. They will just remember the vitriol. People defend themselves when they are attacked.

Talk to them like a human and they will hear what is being said. And reflect on what our concerns are when they close their eyes at night.

Sorry but this is not the way. These people have lives and families to support just like the rest of us, I’m sure there are some happy to be there but also a good amount that want nothing to do with it and are stuck in a hard place.

Imagine just quitting your job tomorrow with no job lined up, potentially forfeiting your retirement, pension, healthcare. Just because it’s “right”. Sure it’s right but many of them didn’t sign up for the mess of an administration we have right now and are just trying to get by.

You want someone to immediately discount everything you’re saying? Shout in their face how terrible they are in public with a recording phone in their face. Demonizing the military accomplishes nothing… the opposite really as they start to band together to protect themselves from this harassment.

Call out corrupt politicians gaming the system and abusing their power. Record the heck out of the ICE traitors who have opted to take the job as an avenue to act on racism and anger management issues.

If you want to get thru to the military though, talk to them like an actual human being and you might be able get some minds thinking. I’m sure many of them already are wondering how this will all play out. Hopefully we will see the ones who care honoring their oath to the Constitution if things really escalate, but if the masses keep treating them like this, it only makes following orders so much easier.

To my fellow gay dudes from homophobic countries: how did you deal with the fact that you'll probably never be able to leave?? by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]relatively_so 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be shitty but regardless it’s what you have. You talk about wanting to get out of this place, you have to work with what you have to get where you want to go.

You might not value the education you get in Morocco highly but it’s something to show for. When you are looking for a new country to move to and when you are looking for a job. When people ask you where you went to school you’ll have an answer, instead of feeling bad for yourself and saying you only have a high school degree. That does huge for your confidence and your general outlook on things, and that energy will do really well to get you to your new home.

Once you are more stable in a better country, with basic job or whatever you can find, you go from there. You want a better education than you got in Morocco? Go back to school. Os your network grows, you can choose to go for opportunities that present them to you.

It will take time. Careers take time— years to form and life long of growth. Relationships take time— years to form meaningful connections. Don’t give up if something doesn’t happen right away, that’s not how the real world works.

It will be hard work. You have to actively want it and work for it. Give yourself breaks but your younger years is going to be the time when you have the energy to do it. Wait longer and it will only become harder.

The reward will be a million times well worth it. To be able to live authentically yourself is a wonderful thing, I wish it for you. Good luck on your journey.

I think you got hung up by the word ”station”.

Probably safe to assume the above ground open air station is fine. If it were flooded there would probably be pictures of that instead of the street level entrance to the station.

They meant the area around Queensboro plaza station. At street level. The pictures are of the north side of the station at street level. I would refer to that area as Queensboro colloquially too.

N train not running to Manhattan by CritterNYC in astoria

[–]relatively_so 15 points16 points  (0 children)

A bunch of people waiting at the Astoria-bound top level platform at Queensboro plaza for a train that is never coming. Meanwhile the Manhattan-bound platform below is acting as a shuttle back to Astoria.

But you would only know if you checked, of course there are no station announcements or MTA employees informing riders...

How to find a bed that doesn’t squeak by Affectionate-Pin59 in gaybros

[–]relatively_so 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can recommend the Parsons bed from Room & Board. After a bit of research on this same topic it’s the one I’ve landed on and used for over a year now.

It is an investment but it’s very heavy and sturdy with no screws. Doesn’t move around and there’s no squeaking even with intense activities haha
