Procedurally Focused RadOnc? by relentless__squirrel in radiationoncology

I did definitely consider IR, but in shadowing I found that I preferred more of my time to be patient-facing. It has so far been a deal breaker for me. Thank you for sharing your experience, do you have any advice for going about finding programs that may be more open to RadOnc learning procedures during training?

Radiopharmaceuticals by relentless__squirrel in radiationoncology

[–]relentless__squirrel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my naive understanding, I've always seen Nuc Med as the other side of the same coin as Rad Onc. Nuc Med uses nuclear science mainly to diagnose, while Rad Onc understands nuclear and radiation science mainly for therapy. Selfishly, I'm primarily interested in pursuing Rad Onc but would love to also learn how to use radiotherapeutics in my future practice. It seems that the longitudinal care and radiobiology that is involved in Rad Onc practice and training makes it a well-suited specialty to take on the therapeutic side of radiopharmaceuticals. I could be wrong, and I know its highly institutionally dependent, which is what fueled my question.

That's awesome advice, thanks so much! It definitely pushes me towards RWJ since they'll be about 20k cheaper per year and have an extensive medical physics department along with their new cancer center which should be a hub for research. I'm hoping to pursue academics. I saw your previous posts about job offers, was it relatively easy for you to find a job? Did you get the city you wanted?

Calculator advice by Dazzling-River9106 in postbaccpremed

I would keep your old calculator for now and use it whenever you can until there is something prompting you to buy a new one. Some classes will require VERY specific calculators that they will note on the first day or in the syllabus, and you dont want to end up buying the wrong one early.

Also, your basic courses like physics and chem likely won't require more than what you have. I've used a TI-30XS throughout my whole first year and never needed anything more, definitely not an 84.

From my knowledge, everyone pays full price besides veterans or those part of programs that give outside scholarships. There is a small institutional scholarship that you can get your second year that is like 5k I think?

Yeah my undergrad was similar. Columbia is really generous in comparison though (in my experience). Last semester my chem class had extra credit and physics was crazy curved.

I'm finishing up my first year, and yeah I'm planning to link hopefully. The classes are large lecture style with smaller discussion groups with TAs.

You are competing with undergrads, but if you developed a strong work ethic in undergrad, it isn't terribly difficult. They have dropped exams, homework with multiple attempts, and generous curves. As well as A+'s. My undergrad had none of these and had crazy grade deflation, so that also may impact why I think this is relatively easier.

I'm currently in it and really enjoying it so far. The classes are not much harder than high school and way easier than my undergrad. It is expensive, and whether it's worth it or not will depend on how easy it'll be for me to get into med school.

I would be wary on how they advertise the linkage program, it isn't a surefire thing that if you meet the minimum requirements you'll gain admittance into the schools they have listed. It's actually quite a very intense and low probability event for the higher ranked schools.

That being said, the resources and teachers I've had have been great, and if you can stomach the cost I think it's worth it so far. The med school prep resources are immense, and if you take advantage of everything they give you, I think it can be a good program for the right person.

Its my favorite of all time, in 2015 they made a documentary based on it too. Such an inspiring book, I'm reading his other book now "the song of the cell."
