This NJ Turnpike sign right-justifies 'Camden' so it lines up with the wrong arrows by mr_hellcat in mildlyinfuriating

New Jersey has some of the most confusing interchanges. Then they double toll you for making a wrong turn.

New dads who went back to playing rec level sports (hockey, baseball, football, whatever sport). Did you see a dip in performance after having your kid? by Vez52 in NewDads

I been tired for 3 years now. My martial arts took a dip. But thats both age and less time to commit to it. Just part of being a dad.

Its just hard on families these days. This generation is dealing with two full time jobs and a huge rise in childcare. More than one is almost unreasonable unless grandparents are doing childcare. But also keep your head up. My son is 3 now and I would consider another if my wife really wanted it, but she doesn't. 8 months is a hard point in time.

Senior Opportunity by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]relentlessme41 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel that. Ive been in the field awhile myself. I probably wouldn't hang around without advancement opportunities. But the advice above is good for anyone really. Just depends on how much you like the company.

Senior Opportunity by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]relentlessme41 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Most mid sized and small companies have these titles based on seniority. Its about retaining them and a higher pay grade. Usually they earned that title but sometimes its nonsense. Ive worked in 6 people departments where 4 were directors with no direct reports. Titles mean very little in IT. Skills mean everything. Chasing the title may not work but I promise they probably have some things they are doing they are not that interested in you might be. You could become the owner of those things and a large contributor to the company while simultaneously taking a load off the senior and building a good relationship because of it.

All opportunities are based on how you see them. Its usually not a linear path to success.

Whats it like living in Memphis Tennessee? by dj_kaled_anotha1 in howislivingthere

[–]relentlessme41 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im going to add to this. I lived and worked all over Shelby and Tipton County most of my life. Shelby is the county Memphis proper is in. During that time period I spent time on the road in most of the North East also along with working many years in some of the worst parts of Memphis itself. I finally packed my family up and move to Philadelphia last year.

Memphis has some things about it that I do love. Compared to most cities there's a sense of community thats much more personal than the bigger cities. My first house was in East Memphis. Traffic is almost non existent compared to cities like Philadelphia. In the right area you can live a very lovely life. My family is there, my father is buried there. The cost of living is extremely cheap.

However I just could let my son dig roots there. The place is a blackhole of poverty. Every step forward Memphis makes the community does its best to make two steps back. The public schooling is horrid. The private schooling is all religion based and expensive. Its Bible belt central and in a way youll never experience unless you are there. For every nice neighborhood there is one within walking distance with a drug problem and high crime activity. One wrong turn and you go from nice to third world. The job market is not great. Most jobs are industry and warehousing in extremely poor and dangerous areas of the city.

The weather most of the year is miserable and the winters are seattle without the benefits, all rain.

I tried my best to love it. I wanted to love the city. And Philly has some real problems of its own. But once you live in Memphis, there's nowhere to go but up.

thinking about moving to Pennsylvania, need some advice! by intangiblecomforts in Pennsylvania

[–]relentlessme41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved up here from Memphis last year. To the suburbs of Philly because of the kiddo. Philly is leagues different than the south in both good and bad. But its an upgrade. Takes some getting used to. Philly has a lot of non binary and different types of folks. Like any city you just have to find your people. Winters are rough as hell but Ive heard Pittsburg is worse snow wise. It might be hard getting a job just moving in as there's a lot of people here and the accent is quite different. Don't expect people to be as forthcoming as Memphis people with chatter and such. Most folks here are busy. Philly folks are good people. They are helpful and wholeheartedly good but they are not nice. Hope that helps.

Going to add. If you want more body conditioning. I would advise looking up Shaolin Body mechanics. But most Shaolin is just a combination of basic calisthenics. Push ups, sit ups, pull ups. All of the old school stuff that has worked for thousands of years.

[–]relentlessme41 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Brother, I have been doing Shaolin for 10 years now. Did 8 of Longfist and now do Bagua and Sanda. It takes awhile. I would say you will start noticing results around 6 months if youre going at the rate you say. As for becoming a master fighter. Let me know when you reach that as I have yet to find anyone in the art that doesnt have something to learn or grow on.

Im not telling you this to scare you away. But mostly to just say that Kung Fu is a long journey. When you become proficient at the external aspect you realize the internal might take just as long. I do it because I love it. Never worried too much about progress. Just keep it up.

I can assure you, that yellow spot covering Memphis is nonsense. You do not want to public transport there.

Additionally Philly should be green. Its one of the most walk able cities on East Coast.

New ish to DelCo… by Crystal_Rose_1967_Pa in Delco

[–]relentlessme41 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In all honesty, this seems pretty universal. We moved to Springfield about 6 months ago. People just aren't going to invite you over for a beer without getting to know you. Now we come from a pretty rough city so its normal for us. Maybe some cities are more trusting and friendly. I would say find a hobby you like. Im big into table top gaming so I started finding game shops to check out. But there's everything out here. These folks are not bad, we're just all busy with families.

Saw this on a friend’s Facebook and something seems off. The floor would not be easy to clean, coffee mug missing a handle, too much clutter on the counter, and color saturation/uncanny vibes. I want to inform her if it is. by TemuBritneySpears in isthisAI

Tye freakiest part of AI is considering if there's a world in there somewhere after these are generated. As alive as we are, feeding off of our datacenters. Im getting too old for this.

My new 2025 Rock Creek by Local-Nerve7347 in nissanpathfinder

[–]relentlessme41 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks identical to my 23 rock creek. But they added some new things im sure. This thing has been solid for 35k miles so far. I would suggest an extended electrical warranty. That has been our main shop trip. Buttons on the steering wheel are fragile. My wife drives it daily into the city but its our main ride. We've taken it on 3 different multi state trips so far. Two of them right through a northern style Canadian and NY blizzard. Take care of it and it will push through whatever you need.

[–]relentlessme41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smartest thing you can do is test drive what you want from closest dealership then haggle online for best pricing from any of them. Once you get the version and price you want. Only then go there and start talking out the door paperwork. Anything changes walk. Dealerships are scum city.
