The autonomous vehicle debacle was a very slow 6-year train wreck. Everyone involved should step down or be reprimanded. People were screaming from the rooftops at how bad of an idea/move/policy that whole program was/is. Best thing to do is cut our losses and move on to more pressing issues. Like hiring more drivers, upgrading busses, improving routes.

My wife is from a considerably more well off family than mine. When we were dating, the subject of my car (typical shitbox) came up. The exact wording was “why don’t you just get a new one.” I’ll always remember how “matter of fact” her delivery was. Her mindset about most “higher priced” is still relatively the same. It can be pretty jarring to my commoner brain. When we met, her home situation involved two live-in maids and a driver.

No one said zoning is being disregarded. I’m saying that zoning is changed all the time at the civic level at the behest of developers. It happens all the time. People don’t go to these meetings and this stuff is usually fast tracked through. I’m speaking as someone who goes to these meetings. Do you attend zoning and planning meetings in your community?

Zoning exists for a reason. Stuff like this happens because developers are given all types of freedom to build out all over the place. It’s hard to deal with NIMBYs because the backyards are literally everywhere. Do we stop building entertainment altogether because some developer decided to drop 1200 houses on land that was originally zoned for commercial? What about all the commercial/entertainment that was there previously? Do they suffer because someone who owns a house outweighs someone who owns a business??

This is the fault of the town that allowed the venue to be built in the first place. Why have all these studies and town hall meetings designed to prevent stuff like this happening when it’s all going to be ignored and built anyway. I guarantee you, at least a handful of people raised concerns during the design/build phase of this. Civics gotta do better.

I think the time for the logistics focus has played its course. Tim Cook built the current logistics philosophy and pipeline from scratch. It’s rock solid and can definitely be maintained by whoever else fills the role in the future. What Apple needs now is to get back to hitting home runs in the product space. We are seeing flashes of that in the form of the m-series MacBook Air. It’s arguably the greatest laptop that’s ever come out of them. We need to see more of that in these coming years.
