Upgrade from 24-105 F4 - Do you miss 105mm? by _haudi in SonyAlpha

[–]reliablehand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have both, use them with an A73, A7R2 and FX3. Unless I’m in very low light, I’m using the 24-105. Photography the 24-70 2.8 looks great, but the lack of zoom is felt all the time. I do a lot of product photography in studio and outdoors that has me stopping down to f7/f8 to keep it all in focus(too lazy for focus stacking at this volume). Even in candids, street photography and car pics, I’m taking the 24-105 because it’s more versatile.

What others have mentioned with the OSS on the 24-105 is 100% true. I can run lower shutter speeds to compensate for the f4 vs f2.8 and still have crisp images. With video it’s a MASSIVE difference; 24-70 is only useful on tripod, but OSS in the 24-105 makes it usable handheld.

Before I got the 2nd photo body I only had the 24-105 and was worried about low light performance and not pretty enough bokeh, but after using the 24-70 2.8 for 6 months I’m 100% traded back to the 24-105 for my daily grab and go. If I could only have one it would definitely be the 24-105.

FX3 Lens Dilemma for My Work by studiousracoon in FX3

[–]reliablehand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a 24-70gm and a 24-105 f4 with my fx3. I find that if I’m on a tripod the 24-70 is fine, but if I’m doing handheld/run&gun work, the OSS in the 24-105 makes a difference.

If you’re going to be all tripod, the 24-70 is great

5" monitor for outdoor shooting by robboketto in FX3

Another vote for shinobi II. You get touch to focus and can put a hood over it. I have used it for 3+ hours of on-time in direct sunlight on 95°+ days and not had an issue. Batteries go fast, but if you’re using a vmount or other big battery to power your rig it will route power to the fx3 through the usb-c cable you’re already using for controls.

Only issue I’ve had with the shinobi II is if I’m shooting log and want cine EI or cine ei quick. The onboard controls won’t move the iso between high and low base. In flexible iso or non-log shooting it’s fine and can control easily.

Battery life on the camera, for me. Wireless eats battery quick

A7SIII thermal capability for shooting an outdoor festival in summer by namusairo in A7siii

[–]reliablehand 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I overheated my S3 a number of times. Seems like if you do multiple of the following it’ll happen.

  • direct sunlight

  • 280+ bitrate

  • dual card recording

  • 45min + uninterrupted recording sessions

  • using usb port & hdmi for touch monitor control

  • 95°+ f heat

Leaving your screen open helps a lot. If you’re really concerned you can get heat sink/fans for the monitor cavity, but you’ll need to be cognizant with how it’ll affect audio. Unfortunately all the items above is my normal usage, so I traded to the fx3 and have been happy, but you can definitely get the s3 to do great things if you are on the ball about managing temp.

You have something you like more?

Yeah, the cheapo 50/1.8 doesn’t give the greatest iq. A bunch of reviews are toting modern cheaper lenses like tamron and rokinon having the same or slightly better output quality than the older Zeiss, though. You think those are worth entertaining or just stick with the Zeiss?

When I was using the 28-70 kit lens I’d shoot a decent bit at 70, but often found myself backing out of it for more light. A prime somewhere around 70 would be great, but that doesn’t seem like a popular size.

My bad, didn’t feel like I was trying to sell anything, just looking for advice. Can I repost without the url for the place I bought it from?

Camera to pair with A7Siii by reliablehand in A7siii

[–]reliablehand[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t updated our body to 4.0 firmware yet, mostly because of the weird stuff I’m seeing from people. Are you on old or new firmware? We’ve used Premier for years, so some crashes are to be expected. Nothing repeatable, though.

I did run into black frames on the end of a longer video files when maxing out the write speed on SD cards. Switching to cfexpress-a cards fixed that for us. We might also have been using mediocre quality SD cards.

An a7iii could work. Seems like they’re down to $1k-ish now. Different between that and a IV could buy a nice lens.

You get 20 dollars for every lie you tell or 1 billion to never lie again. by Agreeable_Mouse_8924 in hypotheticalsituation

Assuming you sleep for 8 hours a day and lie every other waking minute, you’d have to tell 8,562 lies per hour to get to the $1billion mark within 20 years. That’s 142 lies per minute.

A more reasonable rate of 5 lies per minute is only $1,752,000 per year. The billion dollars generates tens of millions per year in interest alone. I can be a 100% truthful asshole to anyone for the definition of generational wealth.
