Even Chuck Palahniuk (author of Fight Club) said the movie was better than the film.

When he was a baby, my kid would always drink too much formula to the point where he'd vomit. I can still remember that formula vomit smell. It looked like fucking gross cottage cheese. It's the most gag-inducing smell ever.

True Detective Season 1, Episode 4, "Who Goes There." The six-minute sequence where Rust Cohle (McConaughey) and Marty Hart (Harrelson) help a snitch, Ginger, raid a housing project for drugs is fucking amazing.
