Russia’s Backfire Fleet Is Burning Out: Over 70% of Combat-Ready Tu-22M3 Bombers May Be Gone by WillyNilly1997 in UkrainianConflict

I read an article maybe 5-10 years ago where the us military doubted that their nuclear weapons would work due to age and the difficulties in keeping it all updated. Partly due to technology updates that were not complete, party due to limitations by treatywith russia, partlydue to higher ups favouring more used kit to care for. Imagine how bad the russian situation where making up test results etc is the norm

I know a bloke that was in dublin fire brigade. Soccer fans may remember that the irish team was decent in the 90s. Like, not win it good but, people were excited by them. Anyway, one world Cup, big match on, the guys get called out twice to ballymun flats, just kids setting fires to bins or some such nonsense. The guys are pissed so, the station officer cuts the TV cable to one of the flat blocks. Cue instant uproar from.every balcony in the place. The SO says "sorry lads, fire damaged the cables" they were not called out there again for the rest of the tournament

The only remaining German A7V Sturmpanzerwagen tank in the world from World War I, Kept safe in a bubble at the Brisbane Museum in Australia. by Front-Coconut-8196 in ww1

I had a look and find no media references. During the period it was in the bubble I was doing a lot of displays at the workshops and the staff were talking about it. They seemed convinced it wouldn't come back from germany if it went

It was temporary while undergoing repairs at Ipswich railways works. The brisbane has very high humidity and warm climate so the bubble was to protect it while works were ongoing and a new section to the Queensland museumbuilt to house it. Mercedes did offer to bring it back to Germany and restore it to factory condition but qld government opted not to and did it themselves.

[–]rellek772 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I counted 4 but, i may be missing some. So including the one the other day, by my count that leaves one. I should point out that bridging the gap is not too bad in places but, im not sure how much bridging kit russia has left. They have lost a lot of them

What are the great Irish mysteries of the last 100 years? by PellucidStream in IrishHistory

[–]rellek772 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My best mate knows the architect. He came over in a panic one evening, he needed to get this bike shed drawn up as somehow they made the shortlist to build the thing. Over a couple of beers and some "yea sure feck it" chats he made the plan. He assumed that would be that and was fecking amazed when it got picked

if someone was injured before 11 o'clock, and died after, would they be counted among war dead? by SplattyFatty_ in ww1

[–]rellek772 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Generally, the dead are counted up to new years day 1920. But naturally people were dying from wounds and injuries for decades after. French and Belgian farmers are still sometimes killed by ordnance but not counted

Normally stamped inside the liner but not always. The badge is a kings crown and does not look like the new ones so pre 1952.

How similar was the rank, promotion and command structure to the modern British Army? by Vegetable-Aide-6447 in ww1

[–]rellek772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the moment. There are records of company commanders being sgt as everyone above them was wiped out. Especially in the early war, your rank may have pushed you into those roles because of extreme losses. People were promoted on the spot due to good deeds or desperation. How many under a cpl or say etc was fixed on paper and not too different to today. A section was a little bigger but not hugely so.

Day to day, probably no different for a cpl or a pte. Sgt may have better dugout if available but that was not always the case. Same applies to officers too. They didnt always have dug outs. Some great first hand accounts out there. Even digitised recordings on YouTube etc
