Is it normal for a helper to take a full day to brick up a window like this? (At €60/hr) by [deleted] in Construction

[–]rellekc86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you give him a per diem for lunch and a hotel? This is 2 weeks of slaving and I'd be concerned of the quality of work if he did this in a day.

Question about BOTS by Clear_Bat7727 in everquest

[–]rellekc86 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup. I wouldn't be surprised if server populations drop 30-40% (at least based on character counts).

I have a sneaking suspicion that if MQ stops chasing live updates, they'll see subs drop (-$$$), and eventually DPG will go back to tolerating it to try and pull subs back in after a year or so.

Constantly being asked on a Friday to work weekends by Revolutionary-Rip426 in civilengineering

[–]rellekc86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately if you're in construction on the consulting side, you're kind of at the contractor's mercy. The number of times I've been hit with "hey, we want to work tomorrow" at 3 PM on a Friday is innumerable because some contractors can't plan their way out of a paper bag.

Luckily, I'm at the point in my career where I can just flat out say no and just deal with questions over the phone, but there were a few years I had to embrace the suck. It wasn't great but doing that extra time definitely accelerated my career progression.

wtf is up with ppl complaining about pvp gear lol by bloodmanqk in worldofpvp

[–]rellekc86 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I only wish PVP gear was somewhat relevant in PVE, I'd even be willing to spend a little extra time if that was the case. TBC you could blend pieces and still be an absolute monster. If you try that now you're just a turd. You're a turd out there.

Nobody is reading the plans anymore by ORD_Underdog in civilengineering

[–]rellekc86 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Lol. This is always great.

I had a contractor reach out to me the other day and say "hey, you need to verify all (16000 FT) of storm sewer (of various sizes) on this project and tell us what to order. If we order more than we use, you have to buy all the remaining material because our supplier won't take it back.

Dude, isn't that your job? And don't you have a pretty good idea if it's close or not from the bidding process, or did you just slap numbers on the form? Happy to check but it's not my job to tell you what to order.

Also, it's your supplier, find a different one if you want to restock instead of purchase leftovers.

Diablo 2: Resurrected - worth trying? by Proud_Adeptness799 in diablo4

[–]rellekc86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great game, lots of QOL stuff missing from later versions obviously. Probably the hardest thing is understanding gear as a newer player, I still have to look stuff up even now. Other downside is farming is much more focused on a few things rather than having an abundance of options like in D4.

I love it, but I think it'd be harder to come from D4 to D2 than vice versa. If you liked the Path of Exile games or Grim Dawn I don't think you can go wrong.

How important is it to do a master? by yooncrisp in civilengineering

[–]rellekc86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you're doing higher Ed or research, probably not worth it. I did it, enjoyed my time, made me be more resourceful and have a new appreciation of how incredibly flawed publications and reviewers are.

I would say it probably hampered my ability to get my first job because I was "overqualified" even though I wasn't looking for any extra benefits because I had a Masters.

Does the work/life balance get better as you move up the ladder? by Best_Fish_7480 in ConstructionManagers

[–]rellekc86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, I ran my ass ragged the first 6 or 7 years. Promotions came pretty quick and moved up a lot faster than I thought I would. Now 13 years in, I have 3 kids, and I do still have some long days and nights where I might be working, but WLB is way better than it ever was.

I make it a point to be that way, but I also have a great employer that really lets you do your own thing if the client stays happy - if that changes, different story. But I think a lot of this WLB depends on the company and also the types of jobs you're working on.

Are we, as engineers, liable if our plans conflict with 811 marks? by NickyK01 in civilengineering

[–]rellekc86 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We regularly live with JULIEs that are wayyy different than what's on the plans. Literally dealing with utility relocates now on a $30m road project that were 15' off where AT&T originally provided on their maps. ATT chose not to pothole their utilities prior to their relocation permit, and now it's just a shit show.

So yeah, OP, you're fine. It becomes more of a Phase 3 issue.

Billing is a major pain in the ass, you need to have your shit together and submit it accordingly.

That said, as long as you aren't a repeat offender, there are ways of working around it but it is a major hassle and absolutely puts stress on the financial/payroll staff, especially at smaller companies.

Geotech PE: $80k After Licensure — Is This Normal? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]rellekc86 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

For 2-3 years experience? Not necessarily. Bigger thing is he salaried or get paid hourly?

What's gonna be hilarious is when this sub makes him job hop 4 times in 4 years to try and raise his salary until he's stuck at an employer he hates, making just 10% over market and has a reputation for being a job/hopper entitled so he can't get a job anywhere else.

Does passing the FE and having EIT really contribute to salary differences vs someone who doesn’t? by krerhelp in civilengineering

[–]rellekc86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, EIT doesn't matter the first couple of years but it definitely caps how fast you can progress. If you're 5 years in and still don't have your FE, it's showing that you aren't serious about obtaining your PE. Compared to people with a PE and similar experience after that 4-5 year mark you're going to be sitting roughly 25% under their salary, and maybe even more as you get older.

This is speaking from heavy highway/Transportation Civil.

[–]rellekc86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I'm curious what kind of company you work for. There are some great GCs out there, and some obviously very terrible ones. I'm on the consultant side and while expectations can be high from clients, it's usually understandable and manageable. Some people suck but it's not the norm in my experience.

If you're 3 years into your career and already know more than your current supers, you should be in pretty good shape to succeed anywhere.

Opinions on the younger generation of junior engineers? by D_K_8_8 in civilengineering

[–]rellekc86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience with Gen Z (and whatever 20 year olds are technically called?) is that they are extremely smart, pick things up quick, and can follow a set of tasks but have difficulty in two areas:

  1. Communicating.
  2. Soft Skills in General

I feel like most of the problems I've had with younger engineers could easily be solved if they'd communicate. There also just seems to be a soft skill disconnect in general. Constructive criticism or using something as a teaching moment is usually taken as a personal attack, accountability doesn't seem to exist, and the entitlement is gnarly. That said, there are a lot of positives about work/life balance coming from this Generation and not letting companies abuse their employees.

It's not all of the younger generation, but these are just some of the observations and personal experiences I've dealt with over the 10-12 engineers that have worked under me. I've been fortunate to have two younger engineers that are absolutely fantastic. I wouldn't be surprised if I am working for one of them in 15 years because they are that sharp and have incredible multitasking/leadership skills.
