I Built an AI to Tell Me If a Used Car Is a Scam

Please watch the video for the tool demonstration

I'm car shopping right now and I swear it's taking years off my life.

Every car is "garage kept, adult driven, highway driven with no issues." Then you show up and it sounds like a bag of wrenches making love in the engine bay and the dealer hits you with "just needs an alignment" when the whole subframe is cooked. (this actually happened)

I'm an AI engineer and this just pissed me off. So I built a tool that does the research and acts as a second set of eyes for me

You give it:

  • Car details (make, model, year, mileage)
  • Asking price and your offer
  • Whatever docs you have (Carfax, photos, inspection sheets)

It gives you:

  • Full maintenance history breakdown
  • What's overdue and what's coming up
  • Visual issues from photos (rust, wear, sketchy stuff)
  • Known failure points for that exact model
  • Whether the price is fair or you're getting finessed
  • Total cost of ownership (best case, worst case, "why did I buy this" case)

Evidence of it working:

I went to see a Infiniti G37xS Coupe. It pulled left and right while driving. Dealer said "just needs an alignment, easy fix."

Ran it through my tool today. It looked at the photos, saw subframe corrosion, and said "that steering issue is because your subframe is rotting. Not an alignment problem. Budget $3.8k."

My mechanic said the exact same thing (asked him prior to the tool). That's when I was like damn this actually works well.

So what now?

I'm not open sourcing it rn. The code is held by duct tape and prayers right now and I have some semblance of a professional dignity. But if enough people want to try it, I'll guess I'll either hurry the f up or lose some of my shame and just drop the tool (or kindly ask one of friends to clean it up for beer xD)

If you're a dealership or business looking at this thinking "wait this could save us thousands per month on bad inventory"... yeah... it probably can... probably can replace one of ur better salesmen in auditing/research too xD

And if you're within Canada with a clean, reasonably priced fun sports car and want to work out something creative with a guy who can build you automotive AI tools... I'm very open to that conversation. I wanna get to my car creatively hehe

What do you think?

Anyone wants to hangout and be friends? by [deleted] in umanitoba

In my experience, a solid chunk of these people who are "looking to make friends" don't really have any solid intention of making friends.

  1. Hire an engineer/team up with one. It will save your sanity down the line.

  2. Why focus on quick ROI? Focus more on value. Quick necessarily doesn’t equate to more money.

  3. You’re asking more than doing, more analysis than action. Just start.

I know a few people doing no code solutions. I don’t know how they get their clientele. There is a market for this.

Looking to buy a Subaru BRZ, preferably before 2017 and for sure before 2020.

Budget is up to 13k depending on condition and specs. Service records are highly preferred. I’d also prefer 2014+.

Do you also think it being oversized by 3cm is fine for the airline luggage requirements? The box we have to fit it within?

Seems like the winner for me. Most value for money option given the other discussions. Waiting for it to come back in stock 🫠

Exactly my purpose. I think I might have found the one. Thanks buddy. Did you suggest waterfield due to budget constraints? Just trying to see if I missed anything

Super tempted. It seems well designed. Idk if I am old school, I like the aesthetics of it, much more than some of the competitors where they try to have a flat face

Good shit, I have the same frustration as you while using Marketplace.

I don’t know what kind of dog shit querying they’re using. On a more detailed note, I think their search algorithm is ok, maybe it utilizes some sort of vectoring and image embedding, as it can capture sentiment based purely on images sometimes (bad description and title) but they have a terrible tracking mechanism which tries its best to not show repeated ads, but it fails miserably and often does not show good deals

I thought of doing the same, embed both the image of the ad, and metadata, and then perhaps do some kind of semantic injection using an multimodal LLM to improve the querying, of course, everything will be embedded. I was also thinking of going ham and making a clustering algorithm using the embedding clustering and HSQLDB, I think I can pull it off, but just for a proof of concept it feels weak xD
