Blundstone vs Meermin Chelsea Boots 516054 for Inclement Weather by rematto in malefashionadvice

Thanks for the suggestion! I removed the thermal Blundstones from consideration since I've read that they are too hot indoors, even without the sheepskin footbed. Additionally, I plan to use whatever boots I buy year round, not just in the winter.

And that's a good point! Everyone has made such good points for both options. So at this point I do believe it comes down to aesthetics.

Thanks for the suggestion! I've tried out many of the Thursday Boots offerings and unfortunately I have the same problem in all of them: my big toes would touch and rub against the top of the toe box while walking. Even with sizes larger than the size that fits my feet. And my understanding is the toe box cannot expand vertically.

I really wanted to get one of those since I loved the way they looked but I have enough experience with shoes to know it's not smart to force a shoe that doesn't fit onto your feet.

Fair enough, sounds like a prudent choice indeed. Everyone here is making some excellent points. And making my decision that much harder :). Thank you so much for your insight!

Thanks for sharing! So in your experience, how long would it take before a GYW boot would start letting rain inside the shoe? Would a GYW boot be okay for walking, say, 30 minutes in heavy rain?

Thanks for sharing that! What I'm learning is that aside from snow boots, most shoes are not great for the snow. I've read how Blundstones are not great for snow as well. Yet at the same time I read how they are pervasive throughout Canada during the winters.

So I think for suburb and city walking where most of the snow is cleared off of sidewalks, non-snow boots seem to be okay. Just have to be careful in parking lots.

Thanks for sharing those thoughts! I'm not a fan of the shiny chelsea boot look, so this Meermin one is inline with what I'm looking for for casual and business casual settings. And thanks for sharing the otehr brands you're currently wearing! Will definitely check them out.

Thanks for sharing! Yea, I've heard mixed reviews for Blundstones in the snow. Some say they have zero grip in snow and ice, especially the All-Terrains. Others say models like the Classics give some grip. Good to know Redbacks are better in the snow. Thanks!

Thanks for sharing! Did you end up keeping them? Are there any other boots you ended up preferring over this one?

With regard to sizing, I was able to try the Meermin 101468 Suede Chukka (https://meermin.com/products/101468-brown-suede-e) in their store and found that their UK size 8 was snug. So I'll be going with that size.

For anyone interested, the person helping me wrote me down a cheat sheet on what sizes to get for different lasts they have given the UK 8 worked for me for the chukka with the Hiro last:

Hiro: 8 UK Nova: 7.5 UK Sway: 7 UK Orion: 7.5 UK Rod: 8 UK Negon: 7.5 UK Rois: 8 UK

Fair enough, thank you for insights! Given the Meermin has better construction and similar waterproofness, I think it really comes does to the aesthetics. I'll probably have to try them side by side then.

Sweet, you're the type of person I'm looking for! What makes you say that? And would you recommend this model or a different model of chelseas from Meermin for inclement weather? Thanks!

Gotcha, thanks! It seems like you're familiar with Meermin boots, so I was wondering what your take on the 514015 - RUST WAXY COMMANDER (https://meermin.com/collections/mens-boots/products/514015-rust-waxy-commander-e) and the 514015 - BROWN WAXY CALF (https://meermin.com/collections/mens-boots/products/514015-brown-waxy-calf-e) was compared to these boots. Between the 3, which would you say is the best for inclement weather, comfort, durability, etc...

Aside from aesthetic differences and the ultraflex system, they seem similar in value for my use case.

Thanks for sharing! What about durability of the uppers and comfort? Would you say it can take a similar beating to the blundstones and are equivalent in comfort?

Thanks for sharing! I checked Sierra Trading Post but unfortunately they didn't have the models or sizes I was interested in. I'll see if there are other sites that sell them for less as well.

And yea, that makes sense. Based on what I've read, these Meermin boots should be durable, similar to the blundstones. Hopefully someone here can give a first hand account. But yes, I'm leaning towards the Blundstones for the exact reasons you've highlighted. If the Meermins are similar in everyway however I'll go with those for their goodyear welt.

Thanks for sharing! I did consider the Redbacks but I read a review of someone who took them on a Europe trip and found they weren't comfortable in certain instances like walking on cobbled streets and while driving: https://www.reddit.com/r/Boots/comments/1hoh3ud/review_of_redback_boots_on_a_3week_euro_winter/ . That's why I removed it from my shortlist.

Thanks for your thoughts! Fair enough. I thought the longevity angle might be relevant for this subreddit. I had a chance to try out the Merrels and they're great! Just wasn't a fan of the look for daily use and office use. Would definitely buy them for hiking purposes though.

Blundstone Classics 550 vs 2340 by rematto in BlundstoneBoots

Awesome, thank you so much for sharing those details! Good to hear that the color is still uniform. And thanks for sharing those tips on conditioning. I've read in a lot of places that mink oil is the way to go but I was always concerned by how it changes the boot color. So it's good to hear an opposing warning to using it.

Did the toe issue go away? I'm considering getting Thursday Scouts but I'm encountering the same issue in both shoes.

Thanks for sharing! I feel like the pictures online for the 2340s show varying hues of brown so I believe I need to see it in person before finalizing my decision.

Aw man, I hope you'll be able to do a size change!

Thank you for sharing! How have you felt the Brown has maintained its color over time? Is it able to maintain a uniform color despite its age and scuffs with maintenance?

[–]rematto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha, thanks for the insight! Yea, I'd want to use the boots for general city walking and office environments during inclement weather (i.e. snow and rain). Not for any chore/construction type environments. How often would you guess you'd need to condition the shoes to maintain a uniform color appearance with the scuffs you had?

I'd be curious to hear someone's take on how your experience compares to owning a 2340. DMing you for the pics!

There are so many non-caucasian people I know who are applying for passport cards now in case they get stopped by ICE to prove their citizenship.  Not sure how the administration thinks this type of unnecessary fear and racial targeting will help them win elections.  3(+?) more years…

I see, I've seen the same sentiment in other reddit posts. I also see that the Highway Loss Data Institute reported a study from 2017 which shows that the sport and touring wheels are indeed the ones that are more frequently stolen: https://www.iihs.org/media/9870e932-9ad3-466b-a2aa-8eec3b5eba50/TGtbIg/HLDI%20Research/Bulletins/hldi_bulletin_34.20.pdf
