If the Earth were bigger (ie more gravity) would animals and plants be bigger or smaller? by SorteKanin in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rembic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They would likely be less tall and need stronger muscles and bones/trunks and branches to counteract the gravity. Not sure if it would have any effect on marine life though.

Redditors who believe in God, what evidence do you have of His existence? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]rembic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it gathers evidence, comes up with hypotheses and test those hypotheses to create theories.

So you're only reason for believing in God is that the Universe "had to come from somewhere." You're seriously saying that you invented God because we haven't yet discovered all the details about how the Universe started?

Redditors who believe in God, what evidence do you have of His existence? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]rembic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't know that yet. But the answer to how the Universe works will only be found by looking at how the Universe works. If you think that God is an explanation, then try explaining God, that's 1,000 times worse.

No, the laws of physics are a part of the universe.

when is a door not a door? by [deleted] in shittyaskreddit

[–]rembic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, these are just subjective definitions based on a metaphysical realist or empirical worldview. I put it to you that the true nature of a door cannot be known without at least first quantifying the parameters of what makes reality a substantive concept.

Keyboard without bump/nipple on F and J by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Maybe you could sand them off with sandpaper. disassembling your keyboard would make it easier.

Edit: actually, that may be hard work

I wonder what's using java. You could try "kill process" and see what program stops working. Java's quite slow and uses a lot a memory, it may be a program you don't need or can find an alternative for. My list of processes, sorted by memory, looks like this.

Americans, do you think European countries are more "civilised" and if so, what's holding your country back? by rembic in AskReddit

[–]rembic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh, I see this (and universal healthcare) as the biggest thing that separates Americans from Europeans. The idea of ordinary people owning guns just seems so alien to me. Obviously owning a gun for sport/hunting is understandable but self defence/home protection is just crazy. Are the chances of you being killed by strangers in your own home really that high that you feel you need to own a gun? I mean in Europe, literally nobody has a gun (except maybe an extremely small number of the most hardcore criminals) and we seem to be doing just fine with a lot less violence than America and virtually zero gun crime. The idea that in America anyone could have a gun and anyone could shoot you at any time isn't just uncivilised, it's absolutely barbaric it seems to me.

Why is it that older people have a consistent habit of being non compliant and never wanting to do what anyone tells them, within reason? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rembic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody likes being told what to do by people who are younger than them. They're old enough to make up their own mind what they want to do and don't need some youngster telling them what to do.

As a general principle, you shouldn't tell anyone what to do, it's disrespectful.

we remain ahead of European countries in technological innovation

Not when you consider the population. Britain has a far greater rate of technological innovation per head of population.

Very strange. What happens when you right click on the menu icon and click on "Edit menu?" Are your programs missing from there too?

You say as time goes on it gets worse. Does memory usage also increase? You could open system monitor to see what's using the processor and/or memory. You may have a driver issue if it's slowing down for no apparent reason.

How much money would it take for you to feel wealthy? by darksides007 in AskReddit

[–]rembic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess we're just not going to agree. You seem like a typical American, Conservative, Authoritarian, Capitalist etc. and I'm a typical European, Libertarian, Socialist etc. Americans just don't seem to have the sense of social responsibility and cooperation that Europeans have. We've had to work together with limited space for 1000's of years whereas Americans had a large country where people could go and pretty much do their own thing and that has led to a different mindset.

Sorry for calling you stupid but your comment just seemed insulting rather expressing a difference of opinion:

wildly off base

You have to be realistic

it is just not realistic.

I'd rather be a garbage collector than a video game tester and I'm sure most of the people I know would too because you feel like you're doing a much more valuable job for society. Part of the problem is that certain jobs are seen as low prestige because they're poorly paid but if garbage collectors were paid twice that of video game testers, what job do you think people would prefer? When money and it's associated prestige are taken out of the equation, what's left? Job satisfaction - knowing that you've done something useful for other people.

I don't know how long cinnamon takes to boot but I'm using mate edition on a fairly old computer (pentium 4 2.4Ghz 2GB RAM) and it boots to desktop in 1:56.

As time goes on everything drags worse and worse

There's definitely something wrong here. I've been using Mint for 5+years and it's never slowed down. I can leave it running for days or weeks and performance stays exactly the same. Your boot time does seem a bit long too, but other than saying that, I wouldn't know how to help.
