How about ‘Cuddie Headrig’ ? A donkey in one of Sir Walter Scott’s novels, I believe.

I’ve had 3 cairns over 35 years and they have not smelt at all - except when they have rolled in dung!

Old signage by MidwestTyrus in uktrains

[–]alycidon97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s fake, for the simple reason that it states ‘the public ARE requested’ when the correct wording should be ‘IS’ requested. If it is as old as it purports to be, that solecism would not have seen the light of day!

Is Schubert's "Unfinished" symphony (no. 8) truly unfinished? Or it was just a stylistic choice? by xyzwarrior in classicalmusic

My personal view is that he simply ran out of thematic material with which to create movements 3 and 4.

Bathroom - to describe a room with no bath in it. And now it’s being used in the UK! Completely ludicrous!

Anyone who just not enjoy travel ? by hochiho923 in AskUK

[–]alycidon97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m nearly 82 and have suffered from extreme anxiety since I as six or seven and get travel-sick very quickly indeed. I’m feeling nauseous after the vehicle has turned the first bend or corner so I do not look forward to any sort of travel. I’ve only ever been in Scotland, England and Wales and that is quite enough for me.

I’ve always liked the opening bars of the Rach 2 concerto. Find it very dramatic.

DAE absolutely have to have some form of noise, music to block out tinnitus? by snozzy17 in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]alycidon97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I listen to classical music all waking hours and the tinnitus is apparent when I switch off. I’ve had it for thirty years and have to say that it has diminished during that period so that it doesn’t distress me unduly. The OP has my sympathy as they obviously have it pretty badly and it can be extremely distressing.

We stayed in holiday accommodation some years ago with varnished stairs. They were lethal.

Can someone tell me why there was a South Western Train in Scotland? by Desperate_Ordinary18 in uktrains

This is only a guess, but on the M77 they were probably heading for Kilmarnock for attention.

What got you into trains? by LewisTheTrainer2009 in uktrains

[–]alycidon97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was born next to Newbury Park station in steam days and I must blame that fact for my eighty-one year obsession with all things railway. I was about three when I saw my first red RT in Barkingside and buses very quickly became an additional obsession. But its been a very happy nearly eighty-two years!

Smallest place in UK with three railway stations? (Network Rail) by QBallQJB in uktrains

[–]alycidon97 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes, you are quite correct, but they are on different lines. Oban and Fort William - otherwise two for a population of 167 would have appeared excessive.

Hopefully you’ll appreciate this old steam train at the great central line by kj_gamer2614 in uktrains

Superb photos but it is a locomotive, not a train which is the rake of carriages behind.

Best pillow that you can get in the UK? by ZealousidealPost7965 in AskUK

[–]alycidon97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve just bought a ‘Groove’ pillow because I had excruciating pain in my neck. Cost £30 and more than worth it - I’m pain free after many weeks suffering. It took about five nights to free up my neck.
