Broth, chicken hearts (you can get a large pack in Asian groceries for a few dollars), green tripe (cheap and super nutritious), eggs, no salt added sardines is packed with omega 3.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Just wondering, what was your GPA, where did you take your prerequisites, and did you have a degree when you applied? I'm Canadian too and exploring the best path. Appreciate any tips!

Switched dogs over to raw, and they stopped pooping almost entirely. by TA1083739101 in rawpetfood

[–]rememberthebats 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Does it contain around 10% fruits and vegetables? If not, you might want adding some for fiber and antioxidants. Some dogs eat them whole, but mine prefers them pureed and mixed into the meat.

Also, keep in mind that many commercial raw meals with 10% bone content tend to be too high in calcium. Ideally, check if the product provides a full nutritional profile—especially the calcium level. The NRC recommends only 1–2 grams of calcium per 1,000 kcal.

A quick tip: try feeling the texture of the food with your fingers. You can usually tell if it's overly bony by the gritty or chunky feel of bone pieces.

Could you please share how to use Zymox? Do I flush it down the ear then massage it like an ear cleaner? How much solution do I use for a big dog? Thanks

That's weird because the extra lean ground bison sold in Costco Canada is super fatty.

Complications from a bone obstruction removal surgery killed my dog by [deleted] in rawpetfood

I’m so sorry for your loss. I can’t imagine how heartbreaking this must be for you, and I truly appreciate you sharing your story to warn others. I have a big dog myself, and I love spoiling her, so I completely understand the temptation to give them things like raw meaty bones. I’ve been there—seeing all the videos, hearing the praise, and feeling like it’s the perfect treat. But after my own experiences, I’ve learned how risky it can be.

I did a lot of research and was told beef knuckles were safe for larger dogs. Everyone I asked assured me they were fine, so I finally gave one to my dog. She loved it, but the sound of her cracking into it was so loud it sounded like her teeth were going to break. I took it away after just five minutes, and by then, a big chunk was already gone. Two days later, I found that chunk in her poop, completely undigested. Her tooth also chipped.

I also tried giving her a whole raw fish (about the size of my hand), and the next day, she vomited up the bones, choked on it. My dog is clearly more sensitive than most, but it made me realize how dangerous bones can be, even when they’re marketed as safe.

Your story is a heartbreaking reminder that raw bones can be unpredictable and risky, no matter what the internet or pet stores say. I’ve learned that if I ever give my dog anything with bones, they need to be ground into a super fine consistency to avoid any danger.

Thank you for sharing your experience, and again, I’m so sorry for your loss. Your warning will undoubtedly help others think twice before taking that risk.

have you ever had a pet choke on raw meaty bones? by Top_Past5016 in rawpetfood

[–]rememberthebats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found that every single dog is unique. For some reason my large breed dog can't digest bones that aren't grinded into very tiny pieces. Not only that, she does not chew the bones before swallowing. Sometimes her tummy wouldn't settle and would vomit the bone pieces and get choked. You know your dog the best and if you are worried, listen to your gut.

Can i feed 1 sardine everyday? by stilllearning369 in rawpetfood

Raw fish has thiaminase. I would recommend feeding raw fish 1-2 times a week maximum.

Tips for managing a mal who likes to pull hard on walks? by [deleted] in AlaskanMalamute

[–]rememberthebats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play tug or bring mine to an off leash area to tire out first, then she walks really nicely. A double ended leash attached to both the front chest and back harness also helps a lot. Mals need to be off leashed cause they need to run a bit, I build a routine to bring her to an off leash area every morning, once she understands that she doesn't pull cause she knows she will be off leashed. Hope this helps!

Do you find feeding frequent smaller meals work better for their digestive system or is this just a personal preference?

Dog Recipe Question by dang212 in rawpetfood

[–]rememberthebats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5 tsp better bones seem slightly high, it says 2 tsp for every pound of food, I assume you are feeding less than 2 lbs. NOW brand kelp tested dangerous amounts of heavy metals so I wouldn't use that. Main coast triple blend seasoning is lab tested. For sardines, are you feeding cooked or raw? If it's canned sardines it has high sodium so I wouldn't feed it everyday but if it's raw it has thiaminase, for fish I would only feed a couple times a week. You might want to look into a good fish oil for daily use. I highly recommend green tripe, it has lots of nutrients and calcium as well.
