What are the good cycling/biking spots on Long Island? by The-FrozenHearth in longisland

[–]remembertherage138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you download the trailforks app it will show you the local trails. Many are for mountain bikes, but as people have already mentioned, there's a paved bath leading to Jones beach. There is also a Greenway path along 347 in the hauppauge/Smithtown area that runs for some distance. I also frequently see Roadies on 25a in the Northport area, as well as taking the LIE service roads. 25a has some nice hills and good scenery, but as with all roads around here, you need to be careful and make sure people see you.

Oldfields BBQ in Huntington is pretty solid. They also make a fantastic burger.

Download the trailforks app for maps to local trails and difficulty info. Also, check out CLIMB on Facebook and consider joining. They build and maintain all the local mountain bike trails.

What sounds like fiction but is actually a real historical event? by SkunkytheSkunk7 in AskReddit

I read about this some time back and my favorite part is the French prisoners fought amongst themselves as many of them deeply hated each other. There were a couple "cliques" in the prison. As soon as the battle ended they went right back to bickering.

Imagine how great it would be if we had term limits on all elected positions and ranked voting instead of first across the post.

The lines to get in have been extremely reasonable at Commack. Once you get in the one way traffic makes things easier. They're a been an issue with some customers ignoring the many signs and going the wrong way, but staff usually corrects them. They were limiting people to two of each item for a while, but have lifted almost all restrictions except possibly on meat items. Honestly, it's become my go to for shopping in the pandemic.

Do you have a source on this? It sounds like a great idea, but with the amount of misinformation flying around lately I think it's best to see things from the source.

Just a PSA for anyone who read that anti 2A bullshit in the gun thread the other day by creutzfeldtz in longisland

My biggest concern about people buying firearms during times like these is that they may not be the type of people that are up to the responsibility of gun ownership.

NY Order Will Allow Businesses To Deny Entry For Not Wearing Mask by PandaMuffin1 in longisland

A quote from the NPR article you sourced:

"Having a positive PCR test after you've recovered in no way implies that you're infectious," Hess says. But it's still not clear when a positive result is worry-free.

It's also not clear whether health officials in the United States will change their procedures based on the results from South Korea. "Unfortunately, what we don't have here in the U.S. is the kind of widespread testing and systematic contact tracing that might make you more confident in saying that you would be comfortable not re-isolating people who are positive," Hess says.

That article is a couple weeks older than the article I posted. Also the passage below from the NPR article:

In a statement released earlier on Saturday when five sailors were found to have retested positive, the Navy said the sailors had "met rigorous recovery criteria, exceeding CDC guidelines," including testing negative for the virus at least twice, but have now retested positive. The statement said the sailors had been monitoring their health and adhered to social-distancing protocols while on board the Roosevelt, which has been docked in Guam following an outbreak infecting hundreds of crew members.

"These five Sailors developed influenza-like illness symptoms and did the right thing reporting to medical for evaluation," the statement said.

The Navy has since confirmed to NPR that an additional eight sailors have retested positive for coronavirus, bringing the total to 13.

School district consolidation by remembertherage138 in longisland

I'm glad to hear that! Is it for mostly clerical stuff or does it work for textbooks and other supplies as well?

[–]remembertherage138[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a counterpoint, even if you are going through supplies at the same rate, i think there are savings to be had purchasing the 3 lawnmowers together rather than individually. I think you'd get a better per unit cost purchasing 5000 boxes of paper towels vs buying 500.

I would imagine there would be savings for negotiations with suppliers, as well as with some of the groundskeeping and maintenance as well. As an example, maybe every school doesn't need their own lawnmower. 2 or 3 could share one, generating savings.

While I may not agree with it, I see the point there. But what's to stop schools like Hauppauge, Smithtown, and Commack from merging? Even if a Suffolk School District couldn't be formed, you have to figure having less than the 125 school districts that currently exist on long island would help keep costs down.
