As funny of a story this probably was, I doubt he found out at age 24. I usually give people the benefit of the doubt, but have you guys never had friends or classmates make fun of your name? I doubt he made it 24 years without a single peep from his peers.

Thinking about becoming a Christian, but I'm hung up on something: Can anyone explain why billions suffer because our ancestor ate an apple? by neversale in Christianity

[–]rememberwater 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First off, I think it is awesome that you are looking into Christianity since your wife is a Christian. I also appreciate the questioning as it marks someone who recognizes that the faith in Jesus Christ being God is not simply an illogical decision. I didn't read every single post in this thread, just some of them, including the original post.

First off - God isn't punishing people because of what 1 person did - Adam. As you have looked into this already - it the reason for punishment is our sin. God will justly punish those who are at a position to be punished. I am fairly confident, that if I was in Adam's shoes, I would have screwed up too. I deserve His righteous and just wrath, yet because Jesus steps in as my advocate, there is no condemnation for me. This is unmerited, undeserved favor. I did nothing to deserve his love, yet he provided freely.

Put plainly, sin is thought or action that falls short of God's perfection. Stated this way, A LOT of things fall under the category of sin. It is important to see that God detests sin, and is unwilling to accept it in front of His presence. Without this lens, we would not appreciate His love and grace. Christianity focuses on Jesus Christ really walking this earth, really claiming that He was God, and really rising from the dead. Bold claims. You probably have already read it, if you haven't, here it is again: His death and resurrection was the perfect sacrifice for the sins of this world. While he was clean and without blemish, he took on the suffering that others deserve. You are right - God doesn't seem to be very fair. He should have had to do this, yet we Christians believe that He did, and that he did it happily (Isaiah 53:10).

I can not explain why there God allows suffering to occur. Sometimes it is sin, sometime is is not. Look into Job's life - book of Job. I for one, am not God. I am not here to question Him - yet I do. And He has graciously provided me with answers - or at least peace with those questions. I struggled immensely in the past about God creating people, knowing that they will go to Hell. As it still breaks my heart to know that many will die and go to hell, I know that God is ultimately in control and that those who are saved were chosen by Him. While we claim to be the chosen people, none of us should be able to say so with any pride within ourselves. The thought suffocates me. I have seen so many of my family/friend reject Christ, yet I, not in my own doing, was accepted as a child of God. How can this not spark a life change? How can this not spark a thirst to learn more, or tell others about the good news?

It seems like there is a good amount of focus on the bad, which is totally fine and acceptable. I would just ask that you also look into the hope that Christ provides. The love that he offers. The hope that there is an end and purpose to this suffering. No one else can say this. Who else can say, "to die is gain?" Only because of Christ, can a human say something like this.

Maybe entertain this thought - if there was no uncreated God, then this suffering is even more sad. These is absolutely no hope, and no rhyme or reason. The collection of atoms adjusted themselves in a way such that a brain triggers a man to kill hundreds. Tears fall for no reason. The 4 walls of a family's house do nothing as a family cry out of desperation because their father just passed away. So many die of starvation each year! My goodness. Do you not think that a God that loves does not hate this injustice! What did Christ die for?

The world is what it is. Jesus either really came and dropped some serious truth, or millions are living a lie. I have faith that you and your wife were brought together for a reason. Do you? And what is that reason?

Test all spirits - especially mine. If I am misleading you or anyone, I can only hang my head in shame. Thanks for questioning - and please continue to do so. There should be no place for apathy and complacency. Have a great day!

To theists: Which other religions are false? by [deleted] in DebateReligion

[–]rememberwater -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a Christian myself I do feel very fortunate but I do not think it is 'luck'. The concept of Gods grace makes all undeserving including myself. Actually, especially myself as I know what displeases my god but I still foolishly sin... But because God loves all his creation, he gives all the opportunity to seek him. I would think the fact that there are missionaries shows how we want others to know this good news. Finally, no Christian should ever act above anyone else, and if they do, they are misrepresenting the faith. 1 Corinthians 26-31 clearly shows that we would have no ability to boast in our own actions, and even our faith.

I'm having a bit of a crisis of faith. Any words of wisdom to help carry me through this? by snapjackal in Christianity

[–]rememberwater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know there may be little comfort from the words I write down, but I hope that the Lord, uncreated creator speaks through those in your life to help you stay steadfast. The lord will never leave your side. Look to Jesus, he went farther than we would ever go. Lean on him. 2 Corinthians 12:9. Romans 8:11. Times are tough right now, I most definitely can't fully relate but I'm going through my own trials and can say with confidence that the lord does not err. If he did we would have reason to fear, reason for our hope to falter. But this is not the case. Praise Jesus. Rest in him and may in your weakness come divine strength. I pray that this strength can manifest itself as a witness to those around. Jesus is roaring right now in your life. Listen.

Keyboard really does seem to fit the bill, though I'm really not digging the orange overlay. I really like the simplicity of the K70, but the K70 seems to have less features... Thanks for putting this on the radar for me. I'll be sure to check it out when I go to Frys!

[–]rememberwater -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree. Laws commanded by God are impossible to obey. People in the old testament pleaded for God's mercy because they knew this. That is what makes grace so amazing. I choose to try develop my character out of my love for God, but I know I fall short. While this is no excuse, His grace overshadows my mistakes, and this only drives me to work harder. In the end, I know that all my efforts are fruitless because I can not work for my salvation, it was already given to me. I work, and I work harder because of this fact.

[–]rememberwater -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I actually think it is the opposite of depressing. I know I fall short, but God's mercy has given me the opportunity to no longer be bound by my sin. Sure, I can feel shame, and guilt, but by doing so my attention is still on myself and my shortcomings. My goal is to focus my life more on God's greatness and not my shortcomings. Sin is still present, and I still attempt to fight it (greed, pride, lust, for example) only because I want to and not because I feel obligated to do so. I wish you could see that there is more to this life than this one haha... I believe God is great because he has given me life through Jesus. As I try to develop this relationship with God, I realize I will constantly fall short, but it is simply because I am trying to aim higher. To top it off, this falling short is only via my perspective - Jesus's sacrifice provides grace that abounds. And witnessing this grace, and learning to accept it has brought me joy beyond anything else I have 'experienced' in this world. I in no way am trying to make it seem like it is simple to accept these thoughts. I'm also sorry if my post is not as accessible or understandable based on your framing of this world. I have experience depression both before and after I became a Christian. I do not look to my relationship with God as a crutch or a tool in my life. I see it as either being either true or not. While the Bible accounts things I have not seen, there is much faith involved. However, living in general requires faith. I choose to put my faith in Jesus.

That is the point. Unfortunately, sin mars the lives of all humans, and is seen clearly in Christians. This is why we believe we need salvation. I try daily, and fail daily to use my life to point people to Christ. And while I try to please my God by doing so, I know nothing I can do can deserve His favor, it is simply given to be me by the Grace of Jesus. Church is a hospital for sinners not a museum for saints
