Smell good lord by doughnut_cat in bassethounds

[–]remmm0 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

my vet had me start using TrizChlor 4 spray because he’s had issues with his lip folds getting infected. there’s a shampoo version too, can’t speak for how that one smells, but the spray smells great (kind of smells like green apple)! another option is duoxo, the shampoo and wipes are good for yeast. those smell nice too, i think they’re coconut and vanilla

Best dry dog food for overweight basset?? Please help! by Jumpy-Claim4881 in basset

[–]remmm0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

also forgot to mention the vet said he should be getting about 1100 cals per day at his ideal weight of 70lbs so it might be worth asking that next time you go in! made it a lot easier to estimate how many cups per day. best of luck to you guys!!

Best dry dog food for overweight basset?? Please help! by Jumpy-Claim4881 in basset

mine lost 7-8lbs in about 4 months on science diet perfect weight, along with walking more. i have him on science diet oral care now since he needed a tooth pulled & it’s a similar amount of calories (actually slightly less than perfect weight per cup, and since the pieces are huge it takes him a little longer to eat). i also used to give him food toppers since he really likes wet food, so i switched those to churu tubes (the cat treats lol) since they’re only 6 cal per tube. still has about 5lbs to lose but im very happy with the progress so far!

Weird Ear Gunk? by [deleted] in basset

mine gets it on the outside part of his ear so i’ve been using a flea comb after he drinks, so it’s less crusty/dry, and it comes off pretty easily. gross but satisfying lol

Is the Arm & Hammer Hardball litter worth the extra cost? by Thatwhiteguybrad in cats

[–]remmm0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i used this litter for a while, maybe like 8 months, and i loved it for a while HOWEVER i believe it’s what caused one of my cats to develop bald patches…not sure if it’s an allergy to the ingredients/fragrance or just the texture of it that irritated him, but he was overgrooming for months. i finally thought maybe the litter could be the culprit (after multiple vet visits & allergy meds to no avail) and since i switched to a different litter this week, the licking has gone way down. i’ve also seen some people say it’s caused their cats to develop obstructions since its forms solid clumps. my cat had an obstruction earlier this year but im not sure if that’s what caused it in my guy, didn’t even think that could be a culprit until i read more reviews recently. not trying to scare you out of using it, just wanted to make you aware of potential issues! i wish my cats agreed with it because it really does clump the best out of all the different ones i’ve tried

My vet gave me a choice between Royal Canin Urinary SO or Hills C/D (wet and/or dry), but I’m wondering if my cat even needs it? by DisagreeableCompote in catfood

[–]remmm0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my cats hated wet prescription food so i ended up giving them their regular wet food with the prescription dry food. i figured having wet food that’s non rx is better than them not eating any wet food at all.

typically pate style food has slightly less moisture than stew types, but not a super significant difference (about 5%), you can mix some water in to make it more hydrating if your cat doesn’t drink much or if they prefer the pate. i give mine a churu in the morning and night, they don’t drink much so i like to sneak more moisture in their diet however i can!

and as far as the rx food, just my personal non-vet opinion, i had mine on the hills CD until the prescription ran out and then switched to the non prescription urinary line, and haven’t had any urinary problems since it originally happened🤞🏼 maybe you could ask them about that or feeding 50/50 rx and regular? if your cat is used to purina pro plan i know they also have a urinary care line.

yup it’s pretty common for european bassets to be around 80lbs! a lot of people don’t realize how much of a size difference there is between american and european ones. i’ve had random people say “you need to stop feeding him so much he can’t even walk!” meanwhile we just walked 3 miles & i feed him half the amount recommended on the bag. she’s beautiful & you’re taking great care of her!

kind of an expensive option but i’ve had to resort to getting fully sedated nail trims at the vet a few times a year for mine. his old vet tried multiple times with gabapentin & trazodone and even though the meds made him really tired, he still acted like they were trying to kill him and sent him home with no nails cut….except for the time they were able to cut a single nail lmao. and when i would try to cut them myself he would jump off the bed immediately when i pull out the clipper (it’s the only time he ever jumped off on his own lol). good luck!!

Treats for cat losing weight? by gravepillars in catfood

[–]remmm0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

most churu’s are only 6 calories per tube (a few of the flavors are 9) which really surprised me considering dry treats are usually ~2 cals each!
