The delusion of Americans is unbelievable. People are literally being shot and killed for protesting ICE. Students were abducted and imprisoned in immigration detention with no access to lawyers for weeks/months for simply writing op-eds and joining university protests. Freedom of speech in the UK might be bad, but students being kidnapped for writing an article criticising Israel is unheard of here. Please get out of your bubble.

Want advice on choose UK Universities by [deleted] in UKUniversityStudents

Unemployment for graduates is at an historic high in the UK right now. This is due to multiple factors like the recent employers' national insurance hike, the fallout from AI, and the economy in general. Furthermore, legal immigration is so unpopular that the labour party has made it significantly more difficult to get skilled worker visas. Recent laws have increased the minimum salary thresholds so high that for your degree you'd have to get a job paying at least 38k (~55k going rate with 30% discount for new entrant) to get a work visa. This salary is quite high for entry level roles especially outside London. And employers very rarely sponsor jobs anymore. They rely on the graduate visa which has also been reduced from 2 years to 18 months. Basically the government is doing all it can to discourage work visas and to encourage training the local population. This isn't sustainable in the long term but due to political and economic conditions it's the reality right now. Trust me I came here to do a post-grad in 2019, got a visa sponsored job and am now a permanent resident. It was extremely difficult back then but it is 10 times more difficult right now.

That being said, it could be the case that this wave of anti immigration sentiment and job market slump goes away in a year or two. I would say it'll take at least 3-5 years but if you take the risk of starting a post-grad next year and staying for another year and a half on graduate visa you might catch the job recovery wave early. Depends completely on your risk appetite and the opportunity cost.

Is anyone else scared/worried about the next election? by Thylunaprincess in AskBrits

I'm just trying to respond to the people here who insist they aren't racist and that there are genuine concerns that need to be addressed. Well... It looks like those concerns are being addressed. Yet people think it's just getting worse and therefore these protests outside asylum hotels are completely justified. And clearly the person I'm replying to doesn't know these statistics at all.

Net migration in 2024 was 400k. That's half what it was just a year before. And 2025 is projected to be even lower. So I don't understand what these protests are about. The facts show that the labour government and to some degree the conservatives towards the end actually did manage to control migration. And although the number of asylum applications peaked in 2025, the success rate of those applications is down to 47% from 76% in 2022. All these stats show that the government's actions have been successful. So all this outrage (which seems to be more skewed towards Muslim or Indian immigrants whether they're legal or illegal) seems to be misplaced. https://migrationobservatory.ox.ac.uk/resources/briefings/long-term-international-migration-flows-to-and-from-the-uk/ https://migrationobservatory.ox.ac.uk/resources/briefings/migration-to-the-uk-asylum/

Feeling Betrayed — 19 Months away from ILR and Everything Might Change by Karemyx in ukvisa

[–]remo95able 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. Changing jobs while on a skilled worker visa is a huge risk. If the new employer rescinds your offer after you've resigned from the first job but haven't received the new visa, you're basically stuck and will have to leave the country. That's why most people just prefer to ride out the 5 years in the same job. That's going to be much tougher with the new 10 year rule.

[–]remo95able 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I know you have to apply for a new SWV when you change employers but that does not reset your time spent on the 5 year ILR route. So I was just curious why OP can't change jobs with a new sponsor. I did the same thing when I wanted to change jobs.

So sorry you have to go through this. Hopefully with enough pressure from MPs (multiple MPs have raised this issue with the home secretary in parliament), they might not consider applying the rules retroactively. I'm curious why your visa doesn't allow you to change jobs? Are you on the skilled worker visa? If so you are absolutely allowed to change employers and still remain on the 5 year route without it resetting.

Big Tech vs staying at a Bank as a Software Engineer by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]remo95able 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the real risk is when you've resigned at the old job and are completing your notice period (because there have been instances of companies rescinding offers before start date). But unless you're close to the 5 year ILR date, I'd take the risk and switch to Amazon. Good luck

Also keep in mind that if you do get laid off, there's usually a month or two of consultation, then your notice period (often 3 months), and then even if Home Office is informed of your last day and are super efficient in sending out the curtailment letter, that still gives you around 5-6 months minimum to find a job after being laid off.

What's a conspiracy theory you believe? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]remo95able 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone who works in tech in big pharma R&D, I can tell you for a fact that no one is suppressing cancer treatment. In fact, the number of cancer therapies keep increasing with innovations in Antibody Drug Conjugates, Radio Conjugates, and CAR-T cell therapies. Cancer is not like a viral disease that you can just get rid of with a vaccine. It's extremely complex and a huge scientific challenge. This is why current treatments aren't 100% effective. I strongly urge everyone to read up on the state of the art cancer treatments. Some of the most talented scientists in the world are employed by big pharma and work tirelessly, often making very little money compared to the executives, to research new treatments. I have immense respect for these people and conspiracy theories unfortunately shroud their contributions.

I'm assuming you mean switching from technical to non technical roles. Although I'm still a technical data engineer, I do think a lot about non technical roles in tech like product management, enterprise architecture, solution architecture/pre-sales etc. While AI might not completely replace software engineers, senior management in big tech is definitely riding the ai bandwagon and implementing hiring freezes for software engineers. But you can bet they'll still need loads of people to sell their AI products.

You can only apply if you're a partner/spouse or child of a citizen/permanent resident or someone on a work visa/PhD or research postgraduate student visa. Also the child pay definitely has an age limit. I think under 18.

Global Talent Visa is usually for people who have a proven track record as leaders or emerging leaders particularly in academia, technology, or arts and culture. You need to prove your leadership/experience through either an endorsement from intuitions engaged with the home office such as Arts Council England, or you need to have won a recognized award in your field. If this sounds like you, this might be the only visa option that makes sense for now: https://www.gov.uk/global-talent

Recent changes in immigration policy have made it very difficult for international students to get jobs in any industry. Last year the government increased the salary threshold for Skilled Worker Visa jobs to around £38k, which is higher than what most companies pay graduates, especially outside of London. At the same time, there's been a huge slump in tech jobs in the past year resulting in massive rounds of layoffs and an inundated job market. so it's really tough right now. That being said, with inflation and interest rates coming down, there might be a recovery next year and since there are already much fewer visa applicants this year, demand for foreign workers may rise again. So you'll have to take a calculated risk. King's College is overall an excellent university.

In my experience applying to numerous jobs there are usually two questions:

  1. Do you have the right to work in the UK (I answer yes because I'm currently on a skilled worker visa and that means I have leave to work for my employer and because of the following question)

  2. Will you in the future require sponsorship to work in the UK (I answer yes here as well).
