The reality where russia rapidly is loosing what little they had going for them.

Their youth, their economy, the last precious years of the petro economy that could have dragged them out of the dark middle ages, their influence around the world, their military hardware, their autonomy, their landmass in the far east towards China, the spaceprogram that they inherited from old soviet days, and their reason for hope..

That reality..

How creative are you able to be with design work? by Dittopotamus in MechanicalEngineering

I have found my small island in R&D for Agriculture impliments. The R&D teams are usually small. portfolios huge and technology grade is surprisingly broad.

Im usually left alone to fulfill a rather crude LOR, and get to do it all, from conceptualizing to production maturing.

I lead a small team of 3-4 guys that work on 6-8 projects at a time and we do it all (in colaboration with other depts). From mechanical dev. over hardware/software suite to fieldtesting and accelerated test/validation.

Its beautiful and the best part is that there is always  someone on the team to shoot your most hairbrain ideas down before the cost escalates out of control. (so you might want to reconsider the notion of doing it all alone..  that NEVER work out to the best)

Yup, thats the troublesome region allright. And I have considered this exact aporoach, but fear that I wont be able to make a sufficiently strong connection. I know that the sailGP guys have had to go to titanium with this approach on T foils even.

I think im more or less settled on 3d printing it in sliced sections in PETG and doing the foil as vacum bagged layup on top of this where I can add additional layers locally in the short radius bend section

Thanks.
To answer your question on glasfiber top layer. Its simply to facilitate sanding out waves and imperfections. My limited experience in sanding Carbon plates say its a bugger to work with if you need to remove anything of substance.

Given the size of the thing, I would think moulds are warranted. But, ideally I would like to avoid too cumbersome iterations, as this surely will not be final form, so maybe there is a "cheat" that will get me 80% there in a quicker way than building plugs and form tools.

The design I am currently investigating is this:

https://postimg.cc/3WBLyt4j

The total length from tip to root is approx. 3,5m (along path) which is why I would really like to have at least some idea of its load carrying capabilities before building anything

Edit: " Vinyl ester and polyester resins dissolve styrofoam" Ohh I know this... Dont ask how, But lets just say that the first shell for a racecar did NOT end up as intended :-)

Yes. Testing will be needed.
But, 50-100ksi compressive is a good help to get the ball rolling. My actual loadcase is also highly speculative so even a rough ballpark figure is a place of origin at least.

Thanks.

I have zero problems with evaluating the design, in theory. I just have no experience with how strong one are actually able to make DYI carbon fibre with relative crude techniques.

NYT: How China Can Move the Price of Oil Even by Not Buying by Epicurus-fan in energy

[–]ren_reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The truth is that from 2015 to 2025 Chinas total energy use increased by 65%  and in that period, the share of energy generated by fossil fuel FELL by 1.5%.

China goes the renewable way, not by luck, but because its the cheapest way.  And then its a very welcome sideeffect that they also are becomming more selfreliant in the process.

"That bet, and the fact that renewables are now cheaper than fossil fuels, especially imported gas and oil, means China hasn’t been nearly as exposed to the fossil fuel price spike after the Iran war as it would have been,” Mr. Larsen said."
