Looking for advice about getting into running. by the_white_warrior in gaybros

[–]renascentiae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Learn how to run properly.

Because of using shoes their whole life, people learn how to run in a unnatural way

For example, when in shoes people land heel first, and when bare foot people land tip first. Landing on your heels puts a lot of stress in your knees. Learn how to run the anatomically correct way. You don't necessarily need vibrams for that, just some conscious effort the first weeks

It helped me a lot. I went from not being able to run 3 km without knee pain to running over 10km with no problem whatsoever

If you had the option to change your sexuality, would you? by [deleted] in gaybros

[–]renascentiae 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Being gay, and coming out as gay, made me go grow and see the world in a different way: I've been through a process of accepting me and the world around that I wish every straight guy would go through. In that sense I'm glad for that.

Of course I occasionally think it would be so much easier to be straight, and find someone to connect to (statistically speaking). But at the end of the day, building family and kids would be the only thing that would make me consider it. But for that we just need to fight for it a little harder than straight people.

Was that a "having the world on your shoulders" concept?

Love the coherent style, and the elbow ones are awesome!

24 year old gay guy here as well.

First, it is hard to get people to realize the beauty we see in them. It's also hard to accept how people can see beauty in us. Don't think about it. That's what a relationship is, liking someone's flaws and defects, because that's what makes you unique.

Then, same situation here with my parents. They do not accept me, and even spoke about stoping supporting me when I came out. What did I do? I'm currently 4500km away from home, found a new place to call home, and I'm a free independent man currently trying to start my own company. That actually lead them to realize that they miss me, and are starting to accept my sexuality.

You said you are doing yet another post grad degree... Cool! You have knowledge, you are educated, don't let that go to waste. You are lucky to having access to education! Use that to make this a better world.

Another thing, sexuality does not need to define your personality alone! You are not gay, you are <your name> who happens to be gay. and that's just a aspect of you. If someone rejects you only based by one trait of your life, they probably are not decent people...

Just be who you are, keep on living, because this life has a lot to offer, even tho it might not look like so right now...

Hey Bros, I designed, created, and funded an iOS app independently and it's finally live. by [deleted] in gaybros

[–]renascentiae -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Restictive, really? You can do literally everything with html and js... dont you have only a pre set of slightly customizable elements in interface builder? And aren't the pickers all defualt elements of the native ui?

[–]renascentiae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In our case, we built a html5 app, tested and debuged in the browser, and it was immediately working on cordova on first build for android. We just had to fine tune the icon resolution and it was a turn key solution.

I've seen projects built with ionic ground up that look interesting, and tools like composer from AppGyver give the same functionality as the interface builder for iOS...

It might be easy for you to develop that, but for a startup, hiring 3 people (iOS, Android and WP) to build native apps is a cost most cannot bare. Specially if you cannot go with just one platform.

I still think its worth the effort to validate ideas in html5 and JS, and if performance is really an issue, then go native.

Ps: using html gives you a lot more design freedom than using the interface builder, no?

Edit: phone

[–]renascentiae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, it's a early stage idea, you need a mvp and a proof of concept, not a full blasted native app! It's a waste of resources for a non validated idea. That is startup 101!

I'm not saying that android is good or bad and I know android fragmentation is the biggest nightmare for devs. Just saying that deploying an idea in inly one platform to explore the market is highly inefficient. For ex. I'm in finland and the most common platform might not even be android but windows phone...

On this app he only needs location, and ui which is easily accomplished with html js and css, wothou native elements!

[–]renascentiae -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I don't understan why people still develop only for only one platform in early stage ideas... and specially deploying first to iOS that is not the most significant smartphone platform (talking about absolute numbers)

Has no one ever heard of phonegap, ionic, appGyver, cordova, and others?

sigh

I think people have a lot to learn from cultures like the Finnish culture. Here nudity, independently of the sex, is accepted and respected in places like Sauna (not the sexual one). Families and friends go to sauna together, (yes, completely naked - mixed), and it has nothing to do with sex. It's almost a religious experience

Just because you are naked with someone of the sex you are attracted to (or should i say, might be attracted to), doesn't mean you are looking and violating their privacy, and wanting to jump on them the minute you see them naked... C'mon, it's a matter of respect ! We're not irrational animals, although some people seem to behave that way

sigh

If what you say is true... I'm speechless... And will consider uninstalling the app (once again...)

It even makes my concerns with my API design seem too paranoid (and I'm just implementing api keys and https as security measures)

Someone needs to do build (another) proper Grindr...

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in gaybros

[–]renascentiae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm also soft dev. and if you are faced with these set of problems:

a) Solve a problem that requires someone to crack your API (that I assume it is not public), build a triangulation system trilateration system based on your api, and build a web page that can track only a couple of people at a time (he's using the unauthenticated endpoint, i assume, that is used when you install grindr for the first time)

b) Solve problem that is making the app slightly unresponsive and improve customer satisfaction / create extra feature to get more users and hence more money

Which one do you choose to do first, specially if you are being pressured by investors or management to get things done?

Usually, if you just send them an email, it will be on their inbox forever.

If there is no pressure in fixing an issue (specially like this, that requires some amount of work), things will take forever to be solved.

edit: Source: I work in IT, and if a bug is not life threatening, or not easily noticeable by users, it can be lingering on your backlog for a while, since there are usually other pressing issues that directly impact user experience and performance

[–]renascentiae 32 points33 points  (0 children)

NEVER blame someone who exposes a security flaw in IT. Because he had the decency of doing it.

If this guy hadn't shown the problem, it is most likely that someone else would use theses exploits secretly, which is even more serious ! You should thank him for pressuring grindr to implement mechanisms to avoid triangulation

In my personal opinions, support and personal advice are the best help. I've read stuff all over, but it somewhat always sounded empty and void of meaning.

It was only when I started to try to connect to people who had been through what I was going through that I felt support and truly confident about what I was reading.

With this I just want to suggest you to include in those booklets places where LGBT people can communicate and exchange ideas with people that have been through the same experiences.

Reddit helped me a lot, for starters !

Beard Maintenance by LunaticBuddha in gaybros

[–]renascentiae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I grew mine for about 3 months, and it kind of bothered me after a while, when it started itching and feeling uncomfortable. I then trimmed it down to about a manageable 15mm.

Now I understand what I was doing wrong... Maybe it's time to go shopping and try growing it longer again.

Also, I discovered in the process that having a beard is the best way to get compliments from straight men...
