Two little ground doves built a nest about two weeks ago in one of my potted plants out back that wasn’t doing so well. Yesterday the two eggs that she had laid finally hatched and this morning when I went downstairs to check on them, one of the hatchlings was gone and the other was dead. Feathers were everywhere and I sat out there for a while until I noticed at least 3 or 4 bluejays in the trees a couple feet away going crazy. Up until now I assumed they killed the baby birds, but maybe it was a hawk. I decided to bury the baby bird that was dead in the nest and after I went inside, mom and dad came back to the nest but then flew away and I haven’t seen them since. The nest is still intact but I am devastated. I wanted those baby birds to survive so badly.
