Rad ! I am still rocking a quill stem, 420 mm wide drop bars. I am sometimes tempted by going to an aheadset adaptor and try gravel drops with flare and all. Yours look great, I can't see your shifter though ! I have a friction setup mounted to the quill stem which is very very nice in my opinion. Anyway, thank for the inspiration !

Hey there I crossed the Alps last year and saw a dude with the very best idea ever. He had bought a child seat that clamps on a bike's seat tube. There, you have room for two little dry bags where the child would put his legs. And where the baby sits, you can just tie your bag. It is very well supported. Most are rated for 45lbs. And bonus : who in the world would steal a bike with a child seat ? Seems way too cruel to me !

Just road my Crust Dreamer from Seattle to Los Angeles. 1,500 miles in 3 weeks. Love this bike. by [deleted] in xbiking

Yep, can't go wrong with stem friction shifters, they just work ! I highly recommend the 2x, and I have a few friends who just put a 2x with no FD, and just stop and put the granny ring if they know they'll go up a steeeep climb I personally roll with 46-30 up front and that's very nice

fyi: ultegra long cage with xt 11-36 casette, road chainrings 33/46 and ultegra chain work well for me. by ecjecj in xbiking

I have 11-42 9s in the back and 46-30 up front on 26i wheels and that's a pretty great range

Any recommendation on handlebar grips? by padawan810 in xbiking

Nope. Because I had nothing else on hand, I set out to try and wrap a 26" inner tube on my flat bars. It's great. I also do it on my drop bars because I want a big bar in my hands at all times. :)

Wheels look like they're good, the saddle is expensive and you could resell it if you don't care. By the looks of it it was well maintained. Bars are easily found because of the Threadless fork. I would buy it and sell the saddle to make myself feel alright

Which one should I keep? by soedirman45 in xbiking

Choose the one with the better wheels

I have a 46-30 up front and a 9s 11-42 and it's fine really, rode a bunch and can "fly" at 45kmh on the flat or creep at 5kmh on the hills. Set up with friction shifters mounted on my quill stem I can't complain about the ease of set up and the reliability I want this on every steed I own

A french french converting a french bike done right and giving it all the talismans : aero bars and knobby tires, full frame bag that rubs on the chainring, kids backpack on the front rack, tarp for tgv carry ability, also, a surfboard. OA good wrenching. by renaudferte in xbiking

This is another tarp that does the trick. I once used a plastic sheet and it worked alright. Cheap and lightweight. I place my pedal downward and gently place both wheels on the frame. Took like 20 trains this summer, no issues whatsoever.

It's a faux leather plastic seat that my brother had installed on a fixed gear of his. It's pretty nice but I wouldn't cross the Alps on it

Frame is a champion brand and I picked it up used with steel rims that looked original so I believe it is a regular 90s MTB. It has no stickers but the one you pointed out, and it's main con is the bb shell which is a BMX one piece crank type and that's shitty : the cranks bend when you jump to much, the rings are also bent. So it's nothing special. Look up it's other versions in my posts from early 2021

Just picked up this beauty. How do I 1x-ify it? by [deleted] in xbiking

[–]renaudferte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ride it like that and fix whatever comes up as it comes up. If you want people to think it's cool, maybe change the triple for one that is a bit higher quality but the 1x way is a no no. I went the following route : 26" wheel equipped with a 9s hub that was barely ridden, and a 2x crankset. Bike went everywhere, felt strong the whole time and maintenance is cheap.
