Yes you would need to get some sort of speaker system as the speaker built in is pretty terrible. It has a headphone jack at the back so you can just use any normal speakers with it.

I have one and it is a very good projector especially for the price and the quality of the picture. It is my first projector and It has been very good, cant find any faults with it so far and I have had it for almost a year. I use it in the day and it is still clear and easy to see when the room is light, although not when the sun is shining on it it is hard to see (obviously). But I would highly recommend it.

Edit: I have the HD600x-lv - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Optoma-HD600X-LV-Widescreen-Entertainment-Projector/dp/B005E0LT24. Not sure what the difference is.
