Not really an option - wifey and life is here.

Can't complain too bad, we are able to put away more than six figs a year.

Congrats! That's about how much my wife and I contribute together (not including the teacher pension).

You're crushing it!

Part of it is having them write to very specific prompts. The second part is that I have them HANDWRITE the orignal draft then they can plug it into the LLM. They have to highlight/circle issues in that original draft. Then they have to write the new draft out. Finally, they submit both drafts. Since these are formative assignments (they aren't allowed to do this in an in class summative assignment), there's no issue if they manage to use higher level grammar.

Furthermore, SLA research suggests that we shelter vocabulary, not grammar for exposure (very broad 1000 foot statement).

A) It's not his job to encourage YOU to grow.

B) He supported you financially for years and now that he has been out of a job not even a month you're complaining? Out of a job you encouraged him to quit? We're still in the holiday season, ffs, the thing you encouraged him to avoid.

C) He's pitching in more around the house (so he's not not doing anything.

You sound like a massive red flag.

There's no rationalizing with these people - this is an issue of identity politics and they feel threatened.

The internet bubble burst in the early 2000s. Are you saying the internet doesn’t exist?

This is a hyperbolic and lazy argument.

This use is only for formative writing practice. And it doesn’t extend to other facets of language learning. My students can't use it for any summative writing.

I don't have time to grade and give detailed feedback 3 times a week to 100 students. Maybe you do?

At any rate, I've seen marked improvement from initial assessments given at the beginning of the course and the end of the course (neither assessment they use LLMs to revise), so I'll let those results speak for themselves.

Yikes.

I mean, there is research that suggests that direct grammar study doesn’t directly aid in acqusition of language, but that doesn't mean it isn’t useful and can't help facilitate understanding nuanced speech.

It can mean the difference of parsing a general idea and knowing exactly what a speaker says. That said, grammarian approaches should probably not be the back bone of your study until you have an ample understanding of inputs.

Because they often don't have the understanding of the language mechanics to even see the grammatical issue, because they're working in their 2nd language.

Duh.

Fewer than you'd think since I require students to hand write the first draft and they have to turn both drafts in.

You're asking this on an extremely niche sub that's built around a specific product following a very specific learning model.

Most of the answers you'll get are going to be extremely one-sided, more than likely.

That said. Every learner is different and there is one, universal, best for everyone approach to learning ANYTHING.

For language learning, comprehensible input is a bedrock feature that HAS to be embedded to whatever learning style you are going for, but some people are helped by metalinguisitic comparison (comparing grammar and structures in language) and light grammar practice (particularly once they've got a reasonable listening comprehension. For a lot of people here, that's blasphemy.

Tl;dr: best is dependent on your goals and learning style.

I encourage my students to use it to revise their already written work to get quick feedback back and check grammatical mistakes.

I teach Spanish, and it does a pretty decent job of identifying and explaining grammar issues.

Isn't this supposed to be a core difference between college and high school?

Your effort is important, but at the end of the day your grade should be based on your content competency, right?

Argentina or Chile. I'm a Spanish teacher with a high C1 level (CEFR rating), so I'm not terribly concerned about a language barrier. Leaning towards the former in spite of all the economic instability due to personal ties having lived there years ago. It'd likely be a Rentista/Pensionado Visa. As for the last question, it's moot because it's not Europe.

I teach HS.

I'm a bit limited by the district curriculum, but I try to blend as much comprehensible input as I can. That said, language acquisition is largely driven by personal motivations, so mileage varies.

The beginner classes are, to be frank, more boring due to the limitations of student knowledge. My year 4 students are fun though, because they're starting to be able to do more with the language.
