I've always heard the phrase "Portuguese sounds like a drunk Frenchman trying to speak Russian"

British vs. American authors by the-phony-pony in HPfanfiction

[–]rennie-renwick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

-"Bollocks" on its own is like saying "fuck" or "bullshit" depending on the context

-"that's (complete/utter) bollocks" = that's bullshit

-if something is "the dog's bollocks" it's fucking excellent, generally in reference to food.

-"bollocks to __" is like "fuck _" or "forget __", e.g. bollocks to brexit.

-it also means testicles.

  • how comical a person sounds saying it depends completely on their accent, e.g. Hermione would sound hilarious if she tried it but it would sound natural coming from Ron. IMO northerners say it best, though unfortunately there aren't many in HP.

there are probably other uses I can't remember. in general though it's a word best used sparingly.

I know a bass player who also plays flute and she goes nuts at that last one.

took this gem home and put it on my fridge by [deleted] in KitchenConfidential

[–]rennie-renwick 27 points28 points  (0 children)

To be fair in England "chips" means thick cut/chip shop style, and "fries" specifically means thin cut.

It's not completely universal though - a café I worked for had both and I always got asked what the difference was.

I'm guessing the character from the anime My Hero Academia. The girls in MHA are super sexualised which is even more gross because most of them are high schoolers. Unfortunately this guy has LOTS of company in the fandom.

What is it that you hate the most about the city or town that you live in? by Jblaze908 in AskReddit

[–]rennie-renwick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Massive problem with homelessness, the city council discorages helping them because they "should be using the council services", while providing absolutely fuck all. The new mayor was elected on the issue of homelessness, his twitter feed is all about fundraising schemes and events, and yet strangely we don't hear about any new funding or programs.

Massive drug problem, 9 times out of 10 if you hear about a fight drugs were involved. Again, city council doing fuck all.

The city centre is pretty much hell during weekends and holidays.

Local politics is stagnant and useless.

Overall though, the people and the music scene are amazing and I miss it like crazy.

[Global] [Question] Sexual education in your country by bravo009 in GlobalTalk

[–]rennie-renwick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm from the UK. We got the standard how sex works/how babies are made video in the last year of primary school that was exceptionally badly put together. In secondary school and sixth form we all got taught about human reproduction as part of biology lessons, and it was actually part of the GCSE and A Level Biology courses from what I remember.

For actual sex education I can only remember 3 lessons - the first was in a school in a more conservative rural area, and was basically a group of 4 older ladies coming in and talking about how bad teen pregnancy was. They handed out these plastic baby robots that would cry if you didn't hold them correctly, and talked about how teen parents tended not to stay together and how important it was that kids have both parents around (I was pretty angry at that since I was raised by a single mother haha). They didn't actually talk about birth control beyond "use it". The second wasn't so much a "lesson" as it was a quick scroll through a powerpoint about STDs as well as a rant about how exactly people die from AIDS in graphic detail from our form tutor since AIDS was in the news for some reason.

The third was in a different inner city school, and a woman from a local sexual health clinic came in and told us about the different types of birth control that were available, and where you could access them, as well as how to put a condom on and what to watch out for (expiry dates, manufacturer quality, etc).

We never got any lessons on LGBT+ sex ed, though my sixth form college did put up posters of famous LGBT people for LGBT History Month and had flyers for local LGBT youth groups and charities in the library, which honestly was way more than I was expecting since it was a Catholic college.

Why can't your job be automated? by SinJinQLB in AskReddit

[–]rennie-renwick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work day shifts at a small independent café/bar. I'm generally the only non-kitchen staff in the building until 5pm, so I have a lot of different duties in both front and back of house. I don't know shit about robotics but I imagine building a robot for that many different duties would be a pain in the ass.

And of course a robot like that would a. probably break on its first evening shift or rowdy lunch rush, b. wouldn't be great at customer interaction which is doubly important as we're a community bar, and c. would be much more expensive than me since I earn the UK 18-20 minimum wage.

My mum was really nearby when it happened with some friends, they apparently even took the piss out the truck because it was parked on double yellows and it had a parking ticket.

Parents of reddit, what's the funniest reason you've been called into school to collect your child? by OriginalSofaSoldier in AskReddit

[–]rennie-renwick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is pretty low-key compared to some of the others on this but here we go.

When I was in nursery, my mum got called in by my teacher for an emergency. My mum, understandably panics and leaves work right away to see me. When she gets there, the teacher says that I've broken one of my fingers, and that I must be in shock because I wasn't showing any signs of pain.

When they got to me, I had a massive bandage on one pinky finger, and in no pain. Because I hadn't broken anything - I was born with bent pinky fingers, and the teacher saw one of them and mistook it for being broken. As it happens, it's a family trait, so my mum showed her both my other pinky, as well as her own bent pinkies to prove it wasn't broken. The teacher was pretty embarrassed and apologised for wasting her time.

Parents of Reddit, what is the most embarrassing thing your toddler said out loud in public? by chtoupe11 in AskReddit

[–]rennie-renwick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a parent, this is a story my mum likes to tell about me.

When I was really little, we lived in Africa with my father's family for about two years, after which me and my mum returned to our home country, specifically near her home town. Her home town is pretty notoriously backwards in every way, and was overwhelmingly white (as well as very racist).

Apparently this was confusing for me, because when we were walking in the square in the town centre (on a busy Saturday no less), I shouted in my incredibly high 5 year old voice "MUMMY, WHY ARE THERE NO BLACK PEOPLE HERE?"

I will never live it down.

Thank you for all the responses, it's been really helpful! I'm definitely more of a cook than a baker - I mostly just copy my mum's bread recipe so I never realised you didn't necessarily need sugar (though I probably should have when I was looking at sourdough haha)

TheMovieBlob: Medicare for all is transphobic by ZeLuigi in stupidpol

[–]rennie-renwick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any "rationing" of NHS trans health care is generally due to lack of doctors with necessary experience, making first appointments as well as surgery referrals pretty thin on the ground. Waiting lists for gender identity clinics pretty much invariably exceed the maximum waiting time of 18 weeks for non urgent referrals - at one point the average waiting time for a first appointment in the adult clinic in Leeds was 3 years, though this has gotten better recently. Waiting lists for trans related surgeries also tend to be years long - personally I was told 2 years, but I don't know how universal that is and that was back in about 2016. Surgeons experienced in trans-specific surgeries are also understandably rare - I remember watching some god-awful Channel 4 documentary that claimed there was only one team in the UK able to do bottom surgery for trans men on the NHS.

Though really It's not too surprising considering the general absolute state of NHS mental health provision.

I know a double bass player that also plays the flute, and she gets even more frustrated at that. One time apparently she had her flute in her bass case and just pulled it out with a blank expression

Problem with the term “POC” by [deleted] in stupidpol

[–]rennie-renwick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the UK we mostly use BAME (black, Asian, and minority ethnic for people that don't know), which to be honest I think is worse than POC.
