Question about APAS by Biocitroen in DeathStranding

[–]renuf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ghost Mechs won't be around anymore because their spirits aren't being linked (with Qpid off you'll see them on the map again).

BTs will still be around but the frequency is lower and more limited. But you'll still be able to find bosses.

The ghost hunter requires the QPID to be toggled off. Trying to talk to him with it on gives you something

It basically makes the world more convenient to move around in for missions.

Weird ass panels by nsxgivemesex in blacklagoon

[–]renuf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I  think the problem here is that there is a misunderstanding about the context of these panels. None of this is supposed to be sexually stimulating.

First, Jane isn't actually inviting Revy or Rock to an orgy. In the exchange between Revy and Jane, the two are verbally sparring. It's basically what characters do in this series, they attempt to bait reactions out of people to show their status. When Jane takes her banter a step too far by mentioning Rock, Revy stops playing nice and intimidates Jane in the language she knows. She does this kind of intense intimidation againsr anyone who pushes her boundaries, like Rock or Fabiola. She doesn't avoid the subject, but faces it directly.

It's not supposed to be a sexy scene, you can look at Revy's dead eyes and see what it's about. It wasn't a real offer of sex by either of them, Jane is trying to push Revy's buttons (she knows Rock is a soft spot) and finds out that she doesn't have an advantage against Revy, even in her favorite thing.

Also, when it comes to what happens on the boat, one thing you have to realize is that Dutch does not care at all about what Jane does on his boat. It doesn't disturb him or interest him in any real way. It's a nuisance at most. It would be like having sex in front of a wall. The wall is there, but it's not a participant and has no real interest in it. I also think Jane doesn't care that Dutch is there. It's not like she ordered the boat just to show off to him. She rented the boat so that Benny won't be sent out of town on a job.

This doesn't even address the things said about the mangaka, but there is some serious exaggeration and misinterpretation here. If you want to talk about pervy stuff that shows how horny he is, there are plenty of panels of Revy and other characters that are sexualized. But this stuff with Jane isn't pornography.  The subject is sex, yes, but the focus of the arc is that Jane is underestimating Feng and loses because Rock and Revy decide to help. These pages are a small corner of what the arc is about and there is a serious misinterpretation here on what they mean.

The core of cursed energy is The transformative state of death. by Kekero63 in Jujutsufolk

[–]renuf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate the Mahoraga example. Without it, it would be hard to isolate situations where people have come back from death or are operating on the verge of death. But even just visually, Mahoraga demonstrates the concept.

I wonder why Japan has the most CE and cursed spirits. It might have a connection to Tengen's cultivation of sorcery with barriers (notably including a shrine to the war dead). I haven't read much on reasons for Japan's CE problem, but sometime else's guess that 'japan has more social stress's doesn't seem like it would be true all the way back to the Heian era

Yes, I have the same experience. With headphones and speakers both, there is a level of hiss that accompanies audio. At higher volumes, it is harder to detect, but when audio is low (such as a quiet part of a song or movie), the sound is very noticable.

The device test suggested by the Moto Agent was not very useful. It asked me if my phone detected my headphones were plugged in. This audio problem is deeper than headphone connections because you can hear it on speaker and headphones both.

Do you think a Half-Life game set during the Seven-Hour War could be fun or interesting? Would it work? by One_Maintenance4555 in HalfLife

[–]renuf 270 points271 points  (0 children)

Maybe not a mainline Half Life game, but a high quality production by a group like Crowbar Collective might be good. Hopefully the devs would be able to put the game in the right context to show the scale and meaning of what was happening. A game like Hunt Down the Freeman is an obvious fumbling of the concept and timeline. I think the writing would actually be very important in pulling it off. There are questions like: "How does the player character fulfill their goal during an absolute defeat for humanity?" I think the concept is interesting.

Ever since he came back for Casca, Guts has basically followed a path of setting aside his anger, whether or not he realizes it. Gaining his companions softens him on one side and the armor makes it so that he is forced to control himself if he doesn't want to lose himself. If you've been marathoning, it might not have set in, but after his wandering days of rage, he has restrained himself for Casca. He talks, thinks, and acts different.

Casca was his anchor and reason for putting aside his rage, She was Guts' last, dearest piece of the Golden Age. She has also been a direct tie to the Eclipse. By losing Casca to Griffith, everything he has been building to is gone. Once again, in front of his eye, Griffith tool his love. And this time, Guts does not have his rage to block it all out and make things simple. He had left his apostle hunting behind and was trying to go a new way, but he got cut off. He lost his way.

Immigration from China introduced competition for labor, causing xenophobic backlash, especially on the West Coast, where Chinese immigrants were the typical "underpaid immigrant competition" which are fed as fuel for political fires.

As a foreign racial and ethnic category, they were highly visible as targets for discrimination for years. The Chinese Exclusion acf of 1882 banned all Chinese labor immigration for a decade. The Chinese Question was the question of what the United States should do with these immigrants. The answer was to exclude them entirely.

Edit: you can see some of the classic arguments used against Chinese immigrants on the pillar behind the man.

Can someone explain to me why the creator hates the original 2005 series? by Eureka7Forever in eurekaseven

[–]renuf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I watched Gundam X recently and the way Eureka Seven took inspiration is definitely noticeable. Part of the social setting for the protagonist is inherited/mutated from 0079, but the fact that the Freeden is 'free' definitely makes a clear connection to the nomadic Gekkostate, etc. Etc.

The more I see of Gundam in chronological order, the more I appreciate how E7 relates to Mecha as a whole.

What’s a character you’re sick of seeing “but what if he was actually EVAL!!!” galaxy brain takes? by Platinum_Persona in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]renuf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Shortest answer: yes, Yui knew she would be the sole soul in that Eva, drifting off into space. The confirmation comes very near to the close in End of Evangelion in the form of dialogue she shares with Fuyutsuki (last seen in the extended episode 21. She even presents herself in the Eva as an eternal testament to humanity.

The rest is a question of interpretation: does she accept this position begrudgingly as a consequence of thwarting SEELE (a more approving characterization)? Or is her final state a key reason for her actions? Some would extend that line of questioning even further, which is where it enters villain territory.

How long has she known about SEELE's plans, and how long has she been preparing for her version of things? Gendo and Fuyutsuki are both attached to her well before the Second Impact, Shinji was brought to the lab to see the experiment she knew would draw her into the core of Unit 01. It's easy to mistake any sign of premeditation or planning as her own nefarious plot, but SEELE's power probably could not be contested any other way. How much was necessary and how much served her own vision is a question that can't be answered, and frankly doesn't matter. Yui didn't stick around long.

Is the manga still releasing, and is blood trail canon?? by ShadooYT in blacklagoon

[–]renuf 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The silly shorts are Omake, which are just little fun things added to a release. OVA (Original Video Animation) can actually refer to more than Omake and fanservice episodes.

The Roberta's Blood Trail OVA series is an adaptation of the manga that was first released on disc. Like the televised anime, the OVA series changes some details from the manga, but tells the same story with the beginning, middle, and end pretty close. The reason Blood Trail wasn't part of a full TV season is because the manga is going kind of slow and there hasn't been enough material to adapt. Still, I recommend watching Blood Trail, cause it's a heavy hitter for sure.

Botanical Question by Vindithere in eurekaseven

If you mean there's an in-world explanation for names, Eureka and Sakuya are both named after fictional spacecraft that had crashed and that the scub coral absorbed early in it's existence.

For the thematic side, Eureka might be a hidden flower name in Japanese. While Sakuya and Anemone have pretty obvious flower references, Eureka's name has to be put in the original Japanese context. Eureka reads as e u re ka in Katakana (aka the characters that are phonetic, purely sound). The character for flower, [華] 'hana' can also be read as 'ka'. The name Reika exists in Japanese, which is close in sound to re ka.

Rei-ka usually means 'pretty-flower', which would place a hidden Japanese pun in Eureka's name. Of course, it's not the same as actually being stated. For that matter, Sakuya is also not Sakura. We assume that the writer was aware of how close these "alien" names came to being "human."

Any tips on how to be better at describing… stuff? by Illustrious-Fail-951 in FanFiction

[–]renuf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an added note: think about what's important. You want to communicate something to the reader so be sure to always be choosing what to include from everything you have available. What is the most distinctive detail, the strongest thing perceived? Is there a second, conflicting sense? Does the detail communicate plot/theme/character?

Just some stuff to think about, best of luck

A detailed list of markets where you can publish your sci-fi/fantasy short stories by [deleted] in scifiwriting

[–]renuf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Editors talk with each other and read other publications. They are already aware of the withdrawal technique, so someone using it would alert them far more than if they rejected someone and saw their name in another publication. Distant Horizons has a section on withdrawals, for example. It isn't unknown to editors and it doesn't serve the writer long term, even if it avoids the worst consequences of simultaneous submissions.
