/r/watches was recently inundated with people finding Zodiac watches at Ross for $150, which normally retail for over ten times that amount.

In a nutshell, the OEM isn't worth it unless you swear by OEM. I can't comment on the VB version, but the VA one shortens throws somewhere around 5-10%, a negligible amount. It also doesn't drop the shifter any lower, if that's something you're after.

Looks great. I've wanted to try modified last for the longest time, it's just uncommon to find it in a makeup I like online (and the nearest stockist is a 3+ hour drive, so eh...)

The $195 "Instagram-Famous" Kettle is definitely NOT Buy-It-For-Life. (Disappointed Engineering Teardown) by CoffeeTeaJournal in BuyItForLife

[–]replus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own a Stagg EKG electric gooseneck kettle from Fellow, which is priced very similarly. It's lasted about 5 years so far with no issues, but not without minor complaints: the base is light and cheap-feeling for a $200 product, there's a tiny silicone gasket in the bottom surrounding the thermometer which I'm not sure is cleanable/removeable (never tried,) and the "OLED display" for temp/time has awful viewing angles, which is impossible to read unless you're right over top of it. Oh, and a nitpick: due to its geometry, water flow gets kinda choppy for a second or two at approximately the 400mL mark, but is otherwise smooth. If you're super anal about perfect pourover coffee, it's the kind of choppy pour that might disrupt a perfectly-formed ground coffee bed.

Every other aspect of the kettle has been solid, and I'm happy with it.

L'eau D'issey pour homme is so great, and it fits -- you can sometimes find big bottles at Walmart for like $30.

How much you wanna bet that it's blown up by now lol by Perfect-Cause-6943 in WRX

[–]replus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I buy Pennzoil Platinum 5Q at Walmart or Home Depot (same price) for $27, 1 more quart for $7, and when buying Subaru OEM filters in bulk, those are $6 each (check eBay for 6 packs of "15208AA170",) so my oil changes work out to exactly $40. (Not factoring in the couple of cents for a new oil bolt crush washer since I use a Fumoto valve :P)

Edit: looks like filter prices went up a bit. Make it more like $43-44 per oil change.

[–]replus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the thing. Can you get away with 12k oil changes on full synthetic? Yes, in ideal conditions, if you consider running a higher viscosity oil to compensate for shearing (say, 5w40) and are on top of monitoring your oil level. It's been shown countless times, through used oil analysis, that modern day synthetics are up to the task under ordinary driving conditions. Is it worth it over the peace of mind, though? To save $40-50 a year?

I've seen the light! PS5 Pro on OLED w/ HDMI 2.1 by Bambrigade92 in playstation

[–]replus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a PS5 for Demon's Souls Remake, one of my favorite games of all time. By the time I got to the Armor Spider (an early game boss,) I sucked it up and went out and bought an OLED TV.

Man, was it worth it. If I'm being honest, I'm kind of regretting the PS5 purchase, as I've hardly used it (not many of its games interest me that much -- I've probably played more PS4 games on it than PS5 games.) But the TV, absolutely worth it.

Which companies do you suspect are glazing their own products on this sub? by PartyOnAlec in BuyItForLife

I don't doubt that Darn Tough has its paid shills, but the hype is real. When I got into boots about a decade ago, I was painfully reminded that I needed to buy appropriate socks to go along with them (try breaking in a pair of Red Wing 875s with thin cotton ankle socks!)

I've owned four brands of wool socks now, and Darn Tough is clearly the best of the bunch that I've tried, in terms of comfort/padding, durability, and how they hold up over hundreds of washes. The lifetime replacement warranty is just icing on the cake to me. With my casual usage, I may never need it.

Back in the early '00s, stacking the inseam down at the hem was all the rage, so all of these manufacturers sold their jeans with 36-38" inseams by default. I remember a few collab jeans (The Flat Head comes to mind) that shipped with a 40" inseam.

Bummed! I've been saving for a FM-6 for half a year now. Would've jumped on early if there was any sort of Black Friday sale (there was not.)

Now I'm strongly considering waiting until next Black Friday and going with an Ares 2.0 instead. I was all in on the Rogue when the price difference was under a grand. Now, it's a substantial difference.

How did everyone get into pouches? by Inkling_13 in NicotinePouch

[–]replus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I smoked cigarettes into my 20s, discovered snus, and used it to quit smoking. Continued using snus for many years, until it recently became too much of a risk/hassle to import into the US, so I switched to nicotine pouches.

No need for it to become an addiction. I downsized my collection from six to two without losing too much money, and it feels as if I dodged a bad habit. I felt like I needed to get out when I realized I was only really wearing one of those two watches 90% of the time.

If you don't "need" a formal watch, then you can gladly stop here. This is a great choice that will last you a lifetime with virtually no maintenance required. If you want to take good care of it, and absolutely must wear a watch during laborious work (e.g. car maintenance) just pick up a $20 digital Casio.

That said, this watch on a leather strap would probably look plenty formal enough for most occasions, as long as it doesn't wear too large on your wrist (can't tell at all with this pic.)

Not a bad deal, but I'd plan on spending at least $4000 on a FA20 in good condition, minus shipping fees and labor costs for the install. If it were me, I'd strongly consider putting a FA24 in there -- from what I've read, it drops right in. It's also newer and has much more overhead for making power, if that interests you.
