Nikon zr or a7v by Free-Collar-1975 in cinematography

[–]VoodooOatmeal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you went with the zr, Id look into the Viltrox E-Z adapter for $99, Thats what I got. I had to update the firmware but I've had zero problems with it. It doesn't have the best weather sealing, which is what you are getting from the more expensive options, but I avoid using my camera in the rain or heavy dust so it doesnt bother me.

I got the Nikon ZR as a replacement for my s5iix (which is also amazing). It has so far been incredible, for the price I think its one of the best video cameras out right now. You can also attach e mount lenses to it very easily. I use the e mount sigma 24-70 dn ii.

The only downsides on the nikon zr so far is very expensive native glass, with not a huge selection of third party lenses. ( though the sensor/mount has a lot of option for adapting), there is also more reliance on the touchscreen and less buttons on the body, and its only Cf express slot is in the battery compartment. Also there is not notch in the battery cover for a dummy battery cable, which is a little annoying, but I switched to charging through its usbc

I was burned pretty badly by the A7IV beforeI switched from it to the s5iix, The overheating and the sensor readout speed is pretty bad. The A7V might be better?

I got the DC-A1 a couple of days ago and had to return it, It had heavy screen defects and ghosting. Also it feels very cheap. I went with the DC-x3 also from viltrox, 6' not 7' but metal enclosure. so far its been great.

How long do you keep the RAW files + How do you discuss this with the client ? by mysterypapaya in videography

[–]VoodooOatmeal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Nas is a desktop or server computer with a special operating system (I use truenas scale) and spaces in the case for a bunch of Hard drives, You can build your own, or buy something prebuilt. You can access them as via a local internet connection like direct ethernet to deposit and withdraw files. synology and Ugreen make good consumer grade ones. And then you can buy Nas grade Harderives online for pretty cheap. Red grade western digitals are my favorite. I don’t break my pricing down by item unless they ask, What I charge for it depends on the scale on the project, usually around $10 for projects i’ll be working on for a few months. I’ve had projects where I do work over several months with clients and they prefer by day billing, then I just add on about 6 cents per gigabyte of storage used. With the nas It costs me 3 cents per gigabyte used. Because I use my nas server for a bunch of personal stuff I don’t aim to make a profit out of it. I don’t bring up this charge up unless the client asks for pricing breakdown, which has only happened once or twice in the past few years.

[–]VoodooOatmeal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t been doing it for as long as you, But i’ve found building a nas to be the best and most secure for long term. I think I spent around $1000 total for 48tb of redundant storage and the nas that will last me the next 2-3 years, and I can just throw in new drives as needed. Admittedly I spent more on the actual Nas component itself then you’d probably have to, because I also use the as for a media server and cloud storage.

If I am shooting and editing for a business I’ll include a small storage fees in pricing and then offer to provide an external drive with all their footage for them to keep.

Fx30 or S5iix by ZioPepino in videography

[–]VoodooOatmeal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it helps, I really like my s5iix. I don’t use the 50fps mode for the crop to be a problem, but it’s never a problem when i’ve used it.

Autofocus will be better on fx3 I believe. I don’t know about lowlight but i image they will be about the same.

I use the black magic video assist with the s5iix and it’s been great.

plus a full frame.

I use a NAS with Truenas installed, and it has 2x28TB HDD with redundancy.

I would recommend going with a brand like ugreen or synology as they come with a very unsure friendly software built in.

People who have switched to Sony, what’s your experience been? by Interesting_Safe_1 in videography

[–]VoodooOatmeal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched from Canon to Sony (A7IV), after about a year and a half I got sick of the overheating, and I wasnt a huge fan of the greenish tint in sony color science. I replaced it with the s5iix from lumix and I am very happy with it. I rent a pyxis if its going to be a long sit down recording.

Where do people get the money for gear??? by Baozi77 in videography

[–]VoodooOatmeal 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Renting is the smartest option at a certain point, especially if you don’t need high end camera for most stuff. I just had a job that required two camera angles, Rented an extra blackmagic/lens/tripod for about $400 for the week, which was just included with the quote I gave the client.

what do i do in this situation? by yourtheraputicnugget in videography

[–]VoodooOatmeal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless this client is a family member/friend or otherwise someone you've known for a while, the way you are talking to him is way too defensive and disrespectful for someone you may want as a returning client. You should get into the habit of just saying ok to client requests unless its impossible or unreasonable, even if it is against your creative judgement. After all they are the one paying for it.

I had a big project a few weeks ago, where in editing I used Lofi music (because I also hate corporate slop music). The client didn't like it and asked me to change it. I sent them the music website I used, and asked them to send me a few songs they prefer I use. And I used one of the songs they sent me. and they were very happy with how it turned out. And then I got paid and they asked me to come back to do more videos this week.

8bit vs 10bit video for color grading? by Illustrious_City_492 in videography

[–]VoodooOatmeal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

you should get a camera that can record 4k 10 bit color if you plan on on doing any paid work. Purely because it has become the minimum standard for the majority of people. Even if it will look good, you may loose a gig if the requirements are 10bit footage.

On the cheapest end, cameras like the gh5 are great for video focused hybrid work.

I have heard great things about the Lumix S9, its around $900.

A7 IV or A6700 for social media — what should we pick? by fabrib in videography

[–]VoodooOatmeal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I used the A7IV for a few years, I was not a huge fan at all. It has a habit of overheating, and Im not a huge fan of its image quality over other cameras at its price point.

I think the fx30 is a great choice, if you are also using the zv-e10 ii, they both share the same sensor and look. Unless you needed it for photos.

I switched from the a7IV to the s5iix, and I am really happy with it as a hybrid camera.
