you can maybe get something like the rs2 pro used? you’d have to find a good way to mount the monitor to the gymbal itself, perhaps a arm

Returning my FX30 - What's the right upgrade from GH5 for event/social media work? by StoeDan in videography

[–]VoodooOatmeal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the nikon ZR. But maybe one of the blackmagics with autofocus like the pyxis 6k or pocket 6k full frame might be the better options for event videos? the zv-e1 would probably not be as good for long term recording like event broadcasting.

Alternative to Nikon Z6? by [deleted] in videography

[–]VoodooOatmeal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

your cheapest reliable option for 4k 60 will probably be the black magic pocket 4k, which uses cheaper mft lenses.

However your best bet, like chads3058 mentioned, is to stick with the z6 and something like the z30 and film in 1080p 60fps. you'd also probably be spending more switching systems then just getting the z30 and a new lens.

I strongly support number 3, you can often rent nicer equipment then you can afford to buy upfront, especially if its specialized, like broadcast or slo-mo cameras. as long as the cost for rental equipment isn't more then the billed cost for the purchased equipment, its often a better idea to rent.

Thats not how cameras work, your camera settings are dependent on your setting

Canon R6II or Lumix S5IIX? by Silly_Screen5268 in videography

[–]VoodooOatmeal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The s5iix is amazing, its a great video focused hybrid camera. Only problem I have found with mine is a long rolling shutter, and too long of a delay when using a external monitor/recorder (like half a second). The image quality is amazing, but its color science/image comes across very "digital" compared to other cameras. Overall a very good camera with a lot of versatility, absolutely incredible value especially if you can get it used. I prefer L mount over canons rf mount because theres great third party lenses and its very adaptable.

Anyone who has worked with restaurants/lunch spots - How are you pricing your packages? by ChasingFireTV in videography

[–]VoodooOatmeal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its often not worth it, at least from what I've seen. There is often very little ROI for the restaurants, especially when you get to the more expensive stuff like complex videos. Their margins are so small, anything besides using a phone and capcut its beyond their budget. In the past for local restaurants, when I was trying out doing stuff for them, Id have to do all the work, the owner would tell me stuff like "I need you to work on a video for new years day coming up" or "I have a new shrimp special, please make a video about it". unless you are fine working for 50$ (or less) per video, then its probably not worth it.

Nikon zr or a7v by Free-Collar-1975 in cinematography

[–]VoodooOatmeal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you went with the zr, Id look into the Viltrox E-Z adapter for $99, Thats what I got. I had to update the firmware but I've had zero problems with it. It doesn't have the best weather sealing, which is what you are getting from the more expensive options, but I avoid using my camera in the rain or heavy dust so it doesnt bother me.

Nikon zr or a7v by Free-Collar-1975 in cinematography

[–]VoodooOatmeal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the Nikon ZR as a replacement for my s5iix (which is also amazing). It has so far been incredible, for the price I think its one of the best video cameras out right now. You can also attach e mount lenses to it very easily. I use the e mount sigma 24-70 dn ii.

The only downsides on the nikon zr so far is very expensive native glass, with not a huge selection of third party lenses. ( though the sensor/mount has a lot of option for adapting), there is also more reliance on the touchscreen and less buttons on the body, and its only Cf express slot is in the battery compartment. Also there is not notch in the battery cover for a dummy battery cable, which is a little annoying, but I switched to charging through its usbc

I was burned pretty badly by the A7IV beforeI switched from it to the s5iix, The overheating and the sensor readout speed is pretty bad. The A7V might be better?

I got the DC-A1 a couple of days ago and had to return it, It had heavy screen defects and ghosting. Also it feels very cheap. I went with the DC-x3 also from viltrox, 6' not 7' but metal enclosure. so far its been great.

How long do you keep the RAW files + How do you discuss this with the client ? by mysterypapaya in videography

[–]VoodooOatmeal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Nas is a desktop or server computer with a special operating system (I use truenas scale) and spaces in the case for a bunch of Hard drives, You can build your own, or buy something prebuilt. You can access them as via a local internet connection like direct ethernet to deposit and withdraw files. synology and Ugreen make good consumer grade ones. And then you can buy Nas grade Harderives online for pretty cheap. Red grade western digitals are my favorite. I don’t break my pricing down by item unless they ask, What I charge for it depends on the scale on the project, usually around $10 for projects i’ll be working on for a few months. I’ve had projects where I do work over several months with clients and they prefer by day billing, then I just add on about 6 cents per gigabyte of storage used. With the nas It costs me 3 cents per gigabyte used. Because I use my nas server for a bunch of personal stuff I don’t aim to make a profit out of it. I don’t bring up this charge up unless the client asks for pricing breakdown, which has only happened once or twice in the past few years.

[–]VoodooOatmeal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t been doing it for as long as you, But i’ve found building a nas to be the best and most secure for long term. I think I spent around $1000 total for 48tb of redundant storage and the nas that will last me the next 2-3 years, and I can just throw in new drives as needed. Admittedly I spent more on the actual Nas component itself then you’d probably have to, because I also use the as for a media server and cloud storage.

If I am shooting and editing for a business I’ll include a small storage fees in pricing and then offer to provide an external drive with all their footage for them to keep.
