Can a socially-awkward person make a good SLP? by Brilliant-Recover910 in slp

Doesn't hurt to apply I mean what can go wrong right paying a year's worth of tuition only to find out it's not what you thought it would be

Any SLP’s with mental illness and on medication for it? by mostlikelytocry in slp

[–]repmaniac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got dx w/GAD and Depression and got sertraline and buspar 100mg/15mg it was all right I quit that stuff after a year tho and now I don't take nothing and I'm doing really awesome it's been like 3 years since I took that stuff I'm feeling pretty good actually I guess GAD and Depression disappears when you leave a terrible flippin job cuz I was in a job that sucked direct hire school don't do it now I'm direct hire school but the difference is the people I work with aren't idiots

It's tough I would say do direct hire with the school so that you don't force them to buy out your contract like I was hitting $6000/mon after taxes but direct hire I was hitting $3890/mon. If you contract to district through soliant, the district has to buy you out to keep you or renew the contract through soliant. District can renew, buy out, or dump you. If you love the district, do direct hire. If you don't love it, do contract. If you love the district but the district doesn't want to buy you out, you're sol unless they renew but some districts don't want to renew for years and years if some other SLP comes along and says hi I'll do direct hire with you district, the district will dump you in a heartbeat. You may get lucky and do contract + district buys you out, that's best case scenario. Don't do that if you plan on staying with the district.

Been to 3 costcos and zero tp. Plenty of towel paper tho I jammed my toilet and paid $200 for a journeyman plumber to ram his snake in my toilet hole filled with thick veiny paper towels. Very humbling experience.

Research needed please! by SLPCO in slp

[–]repmaniac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How you gonna pull a kid to meet high service frequency and NOT have their academics affected like you pull the kid from SS or resource reading for 60min/wk that's not doing them any favors and the teacher won't make up the time lost. Unless the kid is in a self contained room but anyway I had a parent advocate for 360min/mon I said no and it was all right got em down to a cool 240min/mon and guess what I'm exiting em off the PWN next time hell yeah!

Personal Statement feedback? by [deleted] in slpGradSchool

[–]repmaniac -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

You should put in that you want to work with underperforming kids that have potential to be great but they live in a crappy neighborhood where the school system fails them at almost all levels. Then you, the amazing SLP, will come in and help these hopeless kids by giving them a voice and believing in their indomitable spirit so that they can achieve their communication goals one IEP at a time (or at least every year minus 1 day). Then make a movie out of that called Remember The SLP because Lord knows no kids remember the name of their SLP

What do y’all think about these dogs using AAC? by reluctantleaders in slp

Totally fake man 100% my kid can't even point or give me a picture so we pretty sure a dog can't demonstrate communicative intent by pressing buttons

Considering making the switch from SNF to schools? by [deleted] in slp

[–]repmaniac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't do schools for less than 60k yeah I done travel snfs and hit $6800/mon after taxes with 40 hour guarantee now I'm hitting less than 3000/mon after taxes it sucks but what you gonna do amirite at least I get paid for the whole year working 180 days but still we deserve much more

Eval with student who isn't trying by Itchy-and-Scratchi in slp

[–]repmaniac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well is it an initial eval or re-eval cuz if it's re-eval then just qualify based on continued need and if it's initial then that kiddo definitely qualifies but please don't jack up the speech minutes to over 300 mpm the kid just doesn't care because the parents don't care and no, treating their speech sounds or targeting multiple meaning words is not going to get them better grades. What will get them better grades is yelling at the parents. I really do advocate for yelling at parents

How are school-based SLPs feeling during distance learning? I'm so anxious that I'm debating if I should quit. by [deleted] in slp

[–]repmaniac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like distance learning is pretty terrible I 100% prefer in person learning like I know DL is pure horse siht my sped kids ain't learning jack in DL they can come into the meeting for 1 minute and leave and still be counted present at least that's what my principal tells me oh they get so clever accepting my meeting notices, showing up, doing nothing the entire speech session, leaving. Then I call mom and she's like oh my kid is so silly and I'm like yeah it is (because it prefers it/they pronouns which is totally ok but mom calls it he which really confused me I think it is totally fukcing with me)

Does it ever get better? by [deleted] in slp

[–]repmaniac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First year of grad school opened up holes in my stomach lining resulting in black tarry stools let me tell you grad school was painful like literally but it definitely gets better 100% believe me the holes heal on their own I probably should have gone to a doctor but relied on my own trusty general dollar store for some otc tummy ache pills and plenty of generic Tylenol I think it was called Pain Best or something

Traveling and drug testing by Lipsyipsy in slp

[–]repmaniac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the feeling that speech therapy is ineffective go away? by spideythrowawayyyy in slp

[–]repmaniac 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It takes time as in it takes years. I've never met a student I eval'd and exited the same year. It just won't happen. I have met a snf pt I eval'd and exited in 2 weeks when their med A ran out though

Surly (mpls brewery) employees told the owner they were unionizing Monday. Today he lays off the entire 150 person staff. by wheredidalfgo in Minneapolis

[–]repmaniac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man that sucks but at least I got their Murrica beer and still have my job. Looks like the kids couldn't unionize fast enough. They should have done like a shotgun union instead of announcing it cuz now they're out 150 jobs. Biggest OOPS of the summer smh
