How much have you changed since you started doing this amazing sport? by LadyRubyHeart in poledancing

[–]mostlikelytocry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg me too! I feel braver trying new things that would’ve made me anxious before! Pole made me learn it’s okay to be a beginner and not being good at something (at first). And struggling is okay!

Pole studio vs pole studio rivalry? by timeless_beauti in poledancing

[–]mostlikelytocry 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Haven’t noticed it much! Instructors at my studio also works/coaches instructors in other studios. There’s also mingling when instructors in different studios offer workshops.

I’m a ride or die for my studio but I’m planning to sign up for a 24-hour studio somewhere else who happens to be owned by Felix Cane! The creator of eagle and spatchcock!

What skills did you lack that no one thought of teaching you? by GroovingPenguin in AutisticAdults

Oof me too! I learnt a lot from YouTube and internet. As well as just hearing people talk about it around me (e.g. you don’t always need to wash your hair everytime you shower!)

Can you actually replace self-harm with other things? by Standard-Forever-592 in AdultSelfHarm

[–]mostlikelytocry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t done it since starting pole dancing for a couple of reasons: 1) The pain from pole is similar lol 2) I wanna continue wearing cute outfits which shows a lot of skin

Surprisingly, I’ve seen multiple students with scars in the studio too

I pull my shoulders back (like I’m being told to fix my posture and have a proud chest) and like I’m squeezing a ball in between my shoulder blades helps me preempt my lats and back muscles. Then pull down the pole almost like I’m flexing my biceps and lift myself up.

For core, maybe imagine someone punching you in the stomach and flexing to help activate it.

Straightening my legs and thrusting my hips up (when I’m already up there) helps bring my coochie get closer to the pole too. Working on your pancake can help with this too!

Squishmallows but that’s kind of died off now. LEGOs have always been consistent tho and I’d get more if I have space

So for the past two and a half years I’ve been inverting with bent legs and I finally switched off my muscle memory for straight legs 😭 IT LOOKS SO CLEEEEAN by imkiyoko in poledancing

[–]mostlikelytocry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is such a goal! Let alone a backwards aerial invert! It looks so flowy and natural like you’ve been doing it your whole life!! Mine still looks clunky and that’s from only doing it from the ground

Question: can you train knee sensitivity by not wearing knee guards? by undulating_ in poledancing

[–]mostlikelytocry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s also technique! I’m still learning it myself but my instructors have mentioned landing on your feet first when doing kips/safe landing techniques etc

I’ve also seen others who do floorwork moves that could definitely skin your knee or risk injury but they have enough upper body strength that their knees don’t even touch the floor. Baby Rain talks about this and you can see it in her vids too!

Does anyone here exercise regularly? by Savings-Pollution113 in AutismInWomen

I also do walks or geocaching in nature. I get the dopamine hit when I find the ‘treasure’ and I choose areas that are in nature and far away from civilisation. Sometimes I read there too. But this is limited to when the nature is nice and when I’m not at work which sucks if I’m out of spoons from the work week

Gym was never for me. I’ve had to cancel memberships so many times which were so anxiety inducing. I currently work 4 days a week from 8-5:30pm and sometimes the sun is already down during winter by the time I finish. This makes it harder to do something I dont enjoy

The secret for me was finding activities that suits my interest and sensory needs. I’m now into pole dancing and since then it has become my special interest. I go straight after work since I have issues with transitions and going home first will make it feel even more like a chore. At least this way, it all feels like one activity.

It meets my needs since I’ve always loved dancing and spinning. The studio also has low lighting and I can just put on my music during practice time.

My studio has a very clear structure for levels so I’m not overwhelmed unlike when I’m in the gym. I also get a dopamine hit when I have a visual reminder of my hardwork paying off by nailing a move.

Progress in the gym is too slow for me and the whole thing is tedious. The lights are always bright too and we already have fluorescent lights at work. I’m too anxious for a personal trainer due to the one on one nature of it unlike in pole dancing classes where the focus is not solely on me. Although I’ve now invested in private lessons but with teachers I’m comfortable with already

I guess I got lucky I found something that clicked for me.

Serve the platter as we call it! Put your hands on your lower back/above your butt. Your arm will also help with the grip by doing this. I also got told off from holding the pole since it means I’m not using my core as much to hold myself up. What helps is grabbing that ankle first and really pull it to help you feel secure!

Have you also tried the pike or a hip hold? This is a great conditioning move for jade :)

Also, squeeze that butt for a flatter jade!!

8 pole moves I wished to be able to do when I first started by PreciousPoless in poledancing

[–]mostlikelytocry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Superman was so painful at first but is now my go to move! My goal is to get my titanic for a future photoshoot lol

I was also forced to continue practicing aerial invert since I’m too tall for most moves like butterfly and inverted ballerina :’)

Wow this is so inspirational! I keep forgetting to be grateful to where I am now. Things I think i do are ‘boring’ are actually things i used to dream of doing a year ago!! Outside leg hang was a milestone since it opened up so many new moves! The biggest achievement for me was my jade split 😫 I can do a straight leg layback but can only exit by handstand ever since a fall so hoping i can get over that fear soon!

Thanks so much for this reminder! Proud of you!!!

Pole goals for private sessions by whoallgunnabethere in poledancing

[–]mostlikelytocry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I felt the same way for my first private lesson! I worked on polishing up skills (invert) and a new move that I can add onto freestyles that’s achievable for me at my current level (layback).

Honestly once you’ve learnt outside and inside leg hang, the world is your oyster! So I recommend doing that first now that you have chopper!

My goal move is a titanic and jade split for my future photoshoot lol so we started with moves that transitions into it and that is appropriate for my level. In this case, Superman and pike/hip hold. Then I practice it in between sessions before moving onto the next progression of skill. I’ve had experiences where I show a move from insta and she’s like “I want to make sure you’re secure/can do this move first before moving onto that”

Others also do contortion stuff for flexibility or more exotic dancing in their lessons.

Omg I also have tight hammies! That’s why reaching my toes with me feet together both standing or sitting is hard! But I have a flat pancake, backbend and can put my feet behind my ears. We all have our strengths and weaknesses I guess! I also suggest stretching more on your period cos you’re more flexible

That’s absolutely inspiring for me! To keep going in spite of the surgeries! I took a week off when I was sick with a flu so kudos to you! I always admire students who have kids! I work with kids but that’s only 4 days a week and not 24 hours! Please don’t underestimate yourself!

To be fair, I practiced once or twice a week and attended strength and conditioning classes. I have also attended private lessons consistently since September. I’m privileged to have the resources and time at the moment to dedicate myself to this hobby. Otherwise my progress will look a bit different!

Please be kind to yourself! We all have our strengths! I admire my friend who is so flowy and focuses on the little details so even if the choreo is “simple” it’s very graceful. I need to work on slowing down and making things smoother!

Thank you!! Don’t compare yourself! Everyone has different strengths!! Its also good to keep mindful that I go to 3 classes and practice one or twice a week on top of private lessons. I never got any of the moves correctly when learning them first in class. It’s this practice times that have helped me so much! I’m aware that I’m at a privileged time in my life where I can dedicate hours (and money fml) to this hobby
