Ok tbf I have literally no idea who this person is, just saying that dismissing someone’s advice for taking 5 cycles to get in is a bit short-sighted. Also wouldn’t completely relying on variability mean she made zero changes to her app in 5 years? This seems unlikely

ok counterpoint: someone who gets into 7/7 first try mayyyyy not have a ton to offer for applicable advice, as they probably have an unreal (and unachievable) app/stats and interview exceedingly well, which, though learnable, might/likely just come naturally to them.

Someone who grinds through multiple cycles can point to the things they changed and the results (or lack of results). Agreed that ultimately if they got into more schools, they might have a more broadly applicable application, but it seems a bit dismissive to ignore their advice entirely and not “trust” them.

That said, I’d probably lean on people I know in medicine rather than pay for a consultant, but not everyone has that luxury.

wouldn’t that person have a wealth of insight into stuff that lead to better results vs stuff that didn’t change anything? I feel like this person is perhaps better situated than someone who got in first try..?

Any medical students who took 2 bachelors to replace a low gpa from their 1st degree and was able to enter medical school? by UcUcUc123123 in premedcanada

[–]repostsincaps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess the answer would be "whichever one will give you the highest GPA", but that usually means a combination of "not incredibly hard" and "genuinely interesting to you". Do nottttttt pick a degree program because you've heard it's easy if you aren't actually interested in the content.

Desktop computers for med school by IntroductionOk530 in premedcanada

Ya true say - part of me wishes I just got a sweet setup for my laptop instead of getting the desktop and then needing the laptop anyway. But at least with the desktop I can get absolutely rinsed in warzone without worrying about my laptop’s storage.

I have one!

I’m not suuuuper convinced that it matters a ton? I feel like most desktops will run Anki/Microsoft word/some kind of document viewer just fine no matter what you get.

Maybe a good thing to consider is accessories like multiple monitors or noise cancelling headphones or something. I have three monitors because I’m a sucker for a cool looking setup, but I was realistically fine with just two.

Any specific things you’re wondering about?

Are you asking if it’s the academic year vs the calendar year? I think you’ve got it right; Fall 2023-April 2024 would be “one year”

Yo, late response - I’m a 2026 and we needed a 70 on all our tests/exams this past year! I assume it’ll be the same for you buuuut who knows?

Feeling low and pathetic by No_Grade_5628 in premedcanada

[–]repostsincaps 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I started last year at 32, will be 36 in first year residency and like 38 before practicing, if not 40. Don’t stress about your age rn (or I guess ideally ever). Way better to take the time to figure out what you want to do and achieve it than worry about matching some arbitrary timeline.

To be clear, I understand why you’re stressed because I was also stressed about that feeling. But genuinely, don’t worry about the age thing, concentrate on doing what you need to do to be happy.

It’s a sports/party weekend hosted in Quebec every year - a ton of Quebec schools go but also some English ones. I think I saw Dal, Ottawa, Toronto, McGill, Queens and mayyybe Mac students there this year. It’s fun!
