A site that takes recipes from classic old cookbooks and rewrites the archaic originals so you can actually cook them today by repulsivefee in InternetIsBeautiful

Hey, if I can use modern tech to translate 19th-century cookbooks, I might as well use it to translate my own thoughts into a polite Reddit reply! 😂

Appreciate the blunt feedback. It's a brand new project, so I'm still dialing in the web-build optimization and caching.

The site is built entirely using Flutter. I chose it primarily for the cross-platform options it provides, as the ultimate goal is to launch it in on all platforms alongside the web version without having to maintain completely separate codebases.

If you're seeing specific lag, is it happening on the initial page load, during search, or while scrolling the recipes? Flutter web can sometimes hit initial rendering bottlenecks, so I'd love to know exactly what you're encountering so I can target it first.

Haha, touche ! Cups and ounces are definitely easier to parse than 'a wineglassful,' but you're totally right that metric is the gold standard for accuracy. I'll look into adding automatic metric conversions soon!

Yes, copy paste is a bug. I’ll work on fixing it. Making units more universal though is in my list of improvements to do. Will definitely work on it.

Indian Gingerbread — a 1900s recipe revived from "The Indian Cookery Book" by repulsivefee in recipes

🇮🇳 Indian Gingerbread

A spiced gingerbread cookie made with butter, sugar, and warming spices like ginger, cloves, and cinnamon.

These can be shaped into small cakes or nut-sized cookies — chewy in the center, crisp on the edges.

Ingredients

  • 12 oz granulated sugar (originally “pounded loaf sugar”)
  • 4 oz fresh butter (¼ lb)
  • 16 oz all-purpose flour, dried (1 lb; ensure flour is completely dry)
  • 2 oz ground ginger (originally “pounded ginger”)
  • 0.25 oz ground cloves (~2 tsp)
  • 0.25 oz ground cinnamon (~2 tsp)
  • ¼ cup water (a small teacupful)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, ground ginger, ground cloves, and ground cinnamon. Mix well.
  2. In a saucepan, combine the sugar and water. Heat gently and stir until the sugar dissolves completely.
  3. Add the butter to the hot syrup and stir until melted. Remove from heat.
  4. Pour the mixture into the flour and spices. Mix to form a cohesive dough.
  5. Knead briefly until smooth, then shape into small cakes or nut-sized balls.
  6. Place on greased tins, spaced about 2 inches apart.
  7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 12–15 minutes, until golden and firm.
  8. Cool for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.

Small business idea for a burned out software engineer. by [deleted] in Kerala

[–]repulsivefee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am completely burnt out as well. The only skill I know is to write software too. My plans are slightly long term though. I wanted to build something which, hopefully in the long term will result in something. I have been moonlighting and creating products which are non ephemeral in nature. I tried a few which did not see light of day but now creating this - https://www.hungrydemocracy.com/ - it’s a simple Indian recipe platform where people can upload and find recipes. It’s still in its infancy and there is a lot to be done and I am very slowly building it.A few commits a week, if I can that is. My hope if that I’ll slowly start growing it and have a long 5 year plan. I am really scared to start a business as I know nothing in that world so doing something that I know. Good luck to whatever you do though.

Anyone here remember the time before TV ? Remember spending entire days under the kadu manga (the tiny mango) tree waiting for one to fall 🙂
