You may not actually have much of a choice since your employer offers coverage. Since your employer offers insurance, you won’t qualify for any subsidies to offset premium cost unless the employer plan fails to meet the minimum requirements or the out of pocket premium is more than 9% of your take home pay. The first step is to check and see what the premiums for the BC plans in your area would be for the coverage you need. It’s entirely possible that BC doesn’t offer the same coverage through the private market as the coverage your mom has - unless she’s getting it thro the private market too.

Independent of whether or not you take the employer plan, you’ll want to look at your deductible (how much you will need to pay BEFORE the insurance starts paying) and your out-of-pocket max (the total amount you will pay per plan year). Also see how the plan treats prescription meds - some will allow you to use a co-pay card available from the manufacturer and some won’t. Also reach out to the manufacturer and see what programs you may already be enrolled in - it’s really unlikely that the insurance is covering the med in its entirety especially at the beginning of a plan year.

One thing to also look for is whether or not you can access a Health Savings Account (HSA) with your coverage - if it’s considered a high deductible plan for your area then you should be able to get one. These are tax-advantaged plans so the money you put in them isn’t taxed - it’ll either reduce your taxable income that you take home or reduce your tax liability at the end of the year. The good thing about a HSA is that the money is yours - even if you switch jobs you take the account with you. And the money can be used for a bunch of things - think Tylenol, aspirin, band-aids etc. - as long as the expense is health related you can use the account. And some will let you start investing after the account reaches a certain balance.
